What's interesting is what appears to be a 'charging' element to the secondary weapons. It's very curious.
The charge element is like a bonus feature. You need a secondary weapon to use it. The charge releases a barrage of the secondary weapon and if it hits a target, each one gives a bonus of 5000 I think.

Also, when you hold the fire button down to charge, any power-ups will stop changing their weapon type (i.e the time counter to alternate the weapon type stops until you release the fire button) and drift towards you. This can be quite irritating if you want to charge up against certain enemies and at the same time avoiding the power-up.

One grouse I have is that they've weakened the purple weapon very significantly (both the auto-lock and the 3-way) to the extent that vulcan shot does more dmg. And the ship is very much faster, but so are the bullets especially in original mode. Less room for error, unlike Raiden III.

Sat down and watched the videos. What bits you get to see look good, and it appears to be a decent step up over R3. Stage 1 alone had some very nice touches with the cloud reflections and smoke stacks.

Now to start hoping for a PC release.

this looks great, even more Raiden-like than Raiden III...! Since it's typex a PC port would be simple, and an Xbox 360 port not much difficulty either, I guess just MS / devkit stuff could be an issue (not sure if Moss has put out other 360 games yet).

{sigh} Only five stages? (The loop doesn't count) They can do better than that.

I just hope the loop offers more than just faster bullets (dare I hope for new bosses?). Although...there IS a bit of hope for that. It looks like the 1-up in st. 3 can only be gotten in the second loop...

While I'm glad they brought back the purple laser, it definitely acts differently than in classic Raiden. Notice how, even when the player is right in front of an enemy, the purple laser will make huge loops all over the screen. In classic Raiden, if you were right in front of the enemy the laser went straight for it, unless of course you moved around to the sides in which case it looped around a bit. The closer you were, the shorter the laser and the less it could loop around and kill other baddies. In Raiden IV, it seems, even if you're right next to the enemy the laser will loop all over the screen without a discernable pattern.

other than that though, I like how the game is shaping up. I was happy with the bullet speed and density in Raiden III though, I actually kind of wish they didn't go back to making the bullets faster. Makes the game a little too unfair when the snipers inevitably come up from the bottom sides of the screen.

Considering this fact and the standard PC components used, I wouldn't even call a PC version a "port"...more like "optimization" with a new menu screen including some options and stuff. Guess the PC version is pretty much a sure thing.
Argh!?! But where is it? I've got the Raiden IV page bookmarked and check it at least once a week and yet still... no word on a pc version :(
Am i missing something?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Waiting game sucks. I guess they have to make sure the arcade owners make their money first so it probably will take a while.

For now it seems i'm gonna have to spot for a 360 and a new tv since i broke mine trying to reorganize my room lol. Something i'd eventually do anyway but man, i'd much rather play the game on my monitor that i can turn on it's side easy.

I 've just read in "Retro Gamer" mag (the one with the VIC 20 coverage)that they talked to some UFO officials and they announced that a US team was woking on a X360 port of raiden IV.

Wii does 15khz low res? Didn't know that.

But why would it matter when Raiden IV is a hi-res game?
AFAIK, yes. Isn't it interlaced 640X480 just plain old NTSC resolution?
Wii will do 480p.

yep, more enemies and faster bullets in original.
bosspatterns are slightly more complicated aswell.

just got this game yesterday and so far i must say it is ecxellent, every issue that was brought up with 3 has been fixed as far as i can tell.

3s point-blank system is still in effect as is a medalling system where the medals are actually worth something, you also have a charge-shot ala Raiden fighters which too increases your points, and not to forget the hidden pyramids make a welcome appereance :D
thats all i could discover in my 4-5credits yesterday, maybe more to come.

im really impressed so far anyways, the game plays, looks and sounds truly excellent, smoke effects almost rival UD with a thick fog-like effect obstructing your vision, nice! :D

ed: all you toothpaste fans can rejoice aswell, the laser is back in its most impressive form yet, it still sucks to use like in all the other games too so youll all be satisfied. :P

A bit too subtle though, no?

Yeah, I was delighted to see the crazy plasma laser but I soon reverted to going for blue every time. Thats the games main flaw imo. You can fuck up by miss-timing your power ups. I'm undecided if the whole fix n' drag pickup idea when you release fire is a good idea either.

The game looks great as you say. The first to surpass Under Defeat.

yeah i agree the difference between light and original are a little too subtle to warrant two modes, the difference is bareley noticeable on teh two first levels but when you get to the third youll definetly start to feel the rank in original while light still pushes along at the same pace.

the toothpaste laser has always been a p.o.s, why so many are so fond of it ill never understand.

i thought the possibility to freeze the colour of the powerups was pretty handy actually, and the timer is invaluable, i hate powerups that change attributes without any kind of notice :x

Ever since Seibu Kaihatsu made the famous purple snake laser weapon with it's first appeaance on the ol' Raiden II PCB...it was a great weapon (assuming that you could stay alive long enough to fully power it up to the maximum).

If you want to play Raiden II on the PSX with all three weapons: Vulcan, Laser, & Snake -- it is possible to do so with some crafty Gameshark codes. You obviously could not play with all three weapons maxed out at the same time on the ol' Raiden II PCB version. Seibu would have none of that unfair player advantage bullshit with their PCB version...play it fair and straight or don't play it at all. Gives it an interesting spin on things with Ultimate Raiden II fightercraft blessed with supernatural powers if you will... ^_~

The Raiden II end-stage bosses don't stand a fighting chance with a Raiden fighter craft maxed out with ALL three weapons firing at the same time!

Ever since that famous Gameshark code that posted on the ol' Shmups.com site about fixing the tate controller issues that plagued the USA PSX region version of Raiden II...that was shmup nirvana at it's best... ^_~

Shame I can't upload that video to my Zune (maybe if I convert it), otherwise I could just conveniently turn it right side up and watch it in its proper TATE view.

This makes Shikigami III look somewhat amateurish. The game looks a bit empty though, especially compared with Cave's latest offering. I guess the drab background colors help highlight the special effects.

Is that fast bullets I see?
It is powerup of laser.
