Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) UPD Aug2021
Re: Progear no Arashi (US/JPN) Updated Jan 2011!
Update. I've been practicing a bit and reading around for tips. Still no explanation on how to do long combos like I posted in the strategy forum. This is probably my favorite game for high score attacks atm.

UTD. Thanks! Keep it up!
Re: Progear no Arashi (US/JPN) Updated Jan 2011!
Awesome! Good work man! Another first Cave 1CC on the Casino Progear board (that's where I got mine). So nice to get our first one in a public arcade too huh?! I still remember the heart pounding thrill of downing that boss for the first time and then walking about the arcade grinning like and idiot!JDE wrote:Got the 1CC earlier today in Casino Arcade, my first ever for a Cave Shmup!
Really chuffed that I managed to do it while HZT was watching as well.
Next target - 10 mil!
And sincerely, when you get your supergun working you;re welcome to borrow my Japan Progear board (or come round mine) to have a go at a higher score (it's easier to score high on 1-loop on the JPN version, even if the difficulty is up a tiny bit).
Re: Progear no Arashi (US/JPN) Updated Jan 2011!
Thanks very much for the offer Spadgy! I think I've worked out what's wrong with the Supergun now and I'm going to attempt a repair in the next few days. Fingers crossed it'll be functional soon!spadgy wrote:When you get your supergun working you're welcome to borrow my Japan Progear board (or come round mine) to have a go at a higher score (it's easier to score high on 1-loop on the JPN version, even if the difficulty is up a tiny bit).

Up to date! Good job guys! Surprised we have not gotten a visit from Skykid to duke it out with Spadgy
Re: Progear no Arashi (US/JPN) Updated FEB 11
Hagane - 8,745,940 - 1-4 - Chain/Nail
I can no miss no bomb till level 3 boss pretty consistently, but stage 4 wrecks me. Kraken is such a whore. At least I figured out how the extended chaining works.

Japanese version:
Aliquantic - 23,512,130 - 2-2 - Bolt/Nail
FINALLY did it after so long, courtesy of switching back to my trusty 14" CRT Perfect until stage 5, where things quickly went downhill and I did surprisingly poorly on the final boss (two misses on the final phase, the QED like?)... that puts me as the worst looping score, yay! The loop is beyond my current skills though, much as I love horis

Good work! Progear was my first ever 1-ALL of any game. What a moment!

Re: Progear no Arashi (US/JPN) Updated FEB
For some reason I haven't gotten a notification that scores were being posted again. I don't understand the hate- but Progear doesn't get as much love as it should.
Thanks for the heads up via PM.

Up to date.
Please note that I don't always get "new post" notifications for this- if you have any doubts, please PM me as well- a quick "here is my score, I posted" will do just fine
Also- for anybody who cares- there's a column for extra info if you care to include it.

Re: Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) Updated MAR
Japanese Ver:
Dunpeal2064 - 5,344,790 - Stage 4 - Bolt/Nail
Pretty crap so far, but I just got this in the Cab yesterday. Trying to figure out how to score, other than just going Futari Maniac on it and cashing in whenever I can.
Need to look up how to score on bosses, if you can, and if the bombs are useful for score, since they seem to do something related to your multiplier?
Also, is there a big difference between regions? My board is Phoenixed, so can't I change region?
This game kicks ass!

Re: Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) Updated MAR
Progear is one of those games where you never bomb ever. Bombing removes the max bomb bonus, which starts you out on higher-level rings after you pick up jewels (if you pick up a bunch of bombs after already having 3 you can pretty much permanently have emeralds). It reduces the multiplier as long as it's on screen, and if the multiplier is low enough can even bring it to 0. It is also a terrible idea to use bombs if you ever want to loop.dunpeal2064 wrote:

Thankfully if you practice jewelling you can trigger diamond waves on demand and get yourself out of sticky situations without needing bombs.

Re: Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) Updated MAR
Ok, that makes things easier, don't bomb. I just noticed that there is a Max Bomb bonus. Had no idea it starts you out at a higher jewel level!
Stage 4 is really boning me right now, as I just can't seem to kill stuff proper, and I end up with bullets in bad places. Only been there twice though.

Ah yes, the stage 4 difficulty jump. Enemies coming from all sides, crazy stuff.dunpeal2064 wrote:Ok, that makes things easier, don't bomb. I just noticed that there is a Max Bomb bonus. Had no idea it starts you out at a higher jewel level!

There's some youtube "how-to" as well as the strategy section here. The biggest scores come from figuring how how to properly get that gem sucking going on (as well as bomb hoarding).
Random- but for some reason I could have sworn you could change regions with phoenix'ed boards
(i.e.)

Congrats on the game though- it's one of the most neatest hori's out there I think.

For real. Stage 4 and the first half of stage 5 was horrible for me when I was playing for score, because it would constantly fuck you over if you weren't paying attention. 2nd loop? Have fun with mandatory stage restarts.RNGmaster wrote:Ah yes, the stage 4 difficulty jump. Enemies coming from all sides, crazy stuff.dunpeal2064 wrote:Ok, that makes things easier, don't bomb. Progear really is a great game. One of my all time favorites, and Hori games are not my forte at all. It's a shame nobody plays it enough for score.
Re: Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) Updated MAR
Damn that's unreal. I didn't know that.ArrogantBastard wrote:2nd loop? Have fun with mandatory stage restarts.
Is it like this on every stage in the second loop, or just the last two? What about the bosses, do you have to restart if you die on those?

Re: Progear no Arashi HS Thread! (US/JPN) Updated MAR
Decided that I had enough random experimenting, and decided to check out some youtube videos.
That jewel-milking right before the boss is nuts. I had no idea you could break 2m on stage 1
