Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Cargo - Swedish Sci-fi flick. It was pretty awesome! The ships and CGI were pretty bad ass!
Pandorum - Quite enjoyed this one; pretty good twists and exciting to watch. Again, awesome ship design.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Just checked out that kick-ass Luc Besson penned sci-fi flick known as "Lock Out". Takes place in the 2079 A.D. timeline. Just crazy with the CIA agent being punched constantly and coming up with some witty remarks between punches thrown. Has the usual Besson-stylized firefights sprinkled throught the film indeed.
His earlier works of La Femme Nikita and The Professional are classics in my book (especially with Jean Reno portrayed as the 'The Cleaner' in the LFN flick). The Americanized remake of "Point of No Return" with Bridget Fonda really doesn't cut it but it's alright. Does a 1:1 copy of the ritzy hotel diner shootout based on it's French LFN flick counterpart. Of course, the tight pacing set therein with LFN is quite something. Makes me wonder why a LFN sequel wasn't made. It certainly could out-do the premise/gun battles set in the first film. With the "street smarts" knowledge and experiences gained from her younger days combined with the extensive military training, Nikita's quite a force to be reckoned with, indeed. Why, she could offer herself as a freelance assassian to the highest bidder/black-ops type of situations.

Aye, I can understand that. The rotoscoping is a bit odd at times.CMoon wrote:Like everything by Bakshi, the rotoscoping drives me crazy. Also, there's virtually no plot short of being chased. Again, when Bakshi actually animates it seems to be shit poor. I really WANT to like Fire and Ice, but no, it just doesn't do as much for me as I wish it did. I'm glad I saw it. I guess I'd put it with Wizards as at least being interesting enough to watch, but I haven't seen a single thing by the man I would want to see more than once.drauch wrote:Do you not like Fire & Ice? I figured something like that would be up your alley...
Your not thinking wrong though; Fire and Ice is doing what I want, just not very well. I mean, somebody, please make more Frank Frazetta based films. I think I could actually deal with every element of this film if the story was just better.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
Extremely enjoyable. Especially for a Star Trek movie that's not in the stars very much, hehe.

It's B&W movie time.
Watched Fritz Lang's 'Woman in the Window' streaming on netflix. I found myself an immediate fan of this period without necessarily being able to draw a lot of comparisons (the first that came to mind was the 1945 And Then There Were None. Woman in the Window has a certain innocence and gentleness, while dealing with homicide and then later, suicide. I think it would probably be boring for movie goers today, but I found its slow, mild tension really amusing (plus, great actor chemistry!)
Followed this one up with Kurosawa's Drunken Angel. I'm a big fan of his vastly underrated Stray Dog, and am wondering if there isn't just something about the vitality of the early Kurosawa that hooks me. Here Shimura plays an eccentric town doctor and Mifune a sickly gangster. Like the best of Kurosawa, it is character that counts. If the film itself is not brilliant than the personalities who make it up are. None of these films are comedies but Kurosawa can make me laugh with the rich characters he creates and it remains a strength of virtually all his films; though these early films definitely show how he didn't really need an elaborate script or huge budget to make a compelling human story.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Skipped V because I saw it already and it sucked.
VI on the other hand is a great film, although not as good as II.

Thanks for reminding me about Stray Dog. Gonna hunt these down, along with the rest of his films. I haven't seen any of them, and that gives me a giddy feeling...CMoon wrote:Followed this one up with Kurosawa's Drunken Angel. Did you know that Brock Peters could barely make his speech (at the beginning of the movie, where he talks about the "alien trash of the galaxy") because of the racist elements? They chose him in part because of his role in To Kill a Mockingbird. That's part of the reason why they cut the scene multiple times; they had to do a bunch of takes so he could compose himself.null1024 wrote:Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
There is also a strong overtone of the fall of the Soviet Union element, which nicely frames the history of the Klingon-Federation alliance being shown in the TV series at the time. Perhaps this seems a bit overrated now, but it was refreshing to see them work in some of those angles. Did you see the version with the "Scooby Doo unmasking" of Colonel West?

Yesterday i saw "Mega Phyton vs. Gatoroid" at my friend's house. It was rather terribad: awful plot, even worse SFX (it's made by asylum...) but we laughed all the time

Yep, this particular ST:TVH flick was the highest grossing ST film of the mid-'80s at the U.S. box office since it's 1986 Thanksgiving weekend opening debut. Even the classic memorable scene with Captain Kirk & Spock taking a ride inside a real San Francisco based Muni bus is priceless (along with the Rambo themed headband insider running joke is good for a laugh or two).null1024 wrote:Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

I've ridden the Muni bus many times so I know the feeling/experience firsthand. The Muni line does run 24/7 everyday in the beloved city of S.F. indeed.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Went on a blind Kurosawa binge myself a couple years back, was indeed some of the best time I'd had with films. Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, Throne of Blood, High and Low, The Bad Sleep Well, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and its sequel Sanjuro, Kagemusha and the stunning Ran... and of course Seven Samurai and Rashomon. Watched all in short succession, loved all. I recommend Throne of Blood if anyone's curious like I was. If you like Macbeth and like samurai flicks you will like Throne of Blood! Climactic scene is among the ultimate in anti-CG insanity.
Dirty Harry fans might get a kick out of Stray Dog, a certain forensic technique from Magnum Force is straight from that film.
I still need to watch Ikiru, The Idiot, The Lower Depths and I Live In Fear. I know the first is a big one, but the second particularly intrigues me since I loved Kurosawa's interpretations of Western literature in Throne, The Bad Sleep Well and Ran.

Re: Movies you've just watched
As much as I love Herzog, his remake can actually be dissapointing if you're coming right off the original. Its been a while since I've seen either, and both are quite good, but I remember not being happy with Herzog's take on it originally.

Or you could compare it to Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr, which was a much slower Gothic mood piece from the early 30s. The girl in it was cute as hell. Criterion Collection released it a coupla year back

Dark Knight Rises.
Relatively predictable plot, but definitely enjoyable. Bane was a pretty good villain.

Re: Movies you've just watched
There's a Criterion Collection compilation of early Kurosawa films that aren't as famous, but just as good. As far as his famous works, I also really liked Rashomon, "Throne Of Blood" (his version of Shakespeare's The Tragedy Of Macbeth), "High And Low," his version of "The Lower Depths" (based on the Guy De Maupassant story), Ikiru, and, of course, Nora Inu ("Stray Dog"). His samurai stuff is good, but, strangely enough, I prefer his other films/stories since there are way too many samurai films I dig.

Just finished watching Flash Gordon. Wow, that really surprised me with how good it was. Definitely need to buy on blu-ray or at least download a better rip.

Batman Begins.
Couldn't remember if I saw it, so I decided to give it watch.
Effectively the same movie as The Dark Knight Rises. Both are still good, but damn, too similar.

Just got the Dawn of the Dead 'ultimate collection' and am watching the 3 different cuts of the film.
I really like the European version...pacing is better and includes some new scenes that I never knew about.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Just got back from the Bourne Supremacy. The movie had a really awkwardly paced start, a solid middle and no ending. I'm not even joking about that. They are literally sitting there planning out the 3rd act and then just decide not to do anything. Terrible.
I haven't been this pissed off at a movie since Rambo.

I'm trying your decide if you're just being random, or genuinely trying to provide commentary on my hatred of the 4th film in two series. In either case my anger at this film it has nothing to do with the relation to the other 3 films. Honestly I barely remember them. The problem is a non-ending that really is that bad regardless of the movie before it.GaijinPunch wrote:You've clearly never seen Big Boob Butt Bangers 4 then... just did not live up to the caliber of 1-3.I haven't been this pissed off at a movie since Rambo.
