My Wii U has been super glitchy lately. And my launch 3DS had a screwed up upper screen. Nintendo is definitely disappointing me recently.

Owing to a slightly ridiculous amount of Lamestop trade-in credit on my old Xbox360 and Kindle Fire, I went ahead and picked up a Wii U yesterday. The initial setup and updating was a bit of a pain and I'm not quite sure what games are worth getting yet, but so far it looks interesting. Apparently everyone on Miiverse is ridiculously good at drawing...

I've come to the conclusion that at least some of these people must be tracing. Lay image on screen and go over with stylus. Maybe not but it is an idea.

And today my DS XL has decided to stop working. I'm guessing the battery is dead. I expect this sort of thing with my PCBs; I've never had such a bad streak with Nintendo products.

Is the battery removable? I remember the GBA SP had a spot where you could unscrew and replace it outright but I think the newer stuff might be closed-case (never actually looked). Hopefully that's the case so you can at least replace the component rather than the whole device.

It's removable, and I'm really glad, because I put that huge $10 Nyko battery in mine so I can actually play the thing when I'm not near a power outlet. It'll probably fail eventually, but it's very nice so far.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I bet you they're secretly negotiating with Success to stop making shitty RPGs and make another installment in the Psyvariar series as a WiiU exclusive.

On a more serious note, what a retarded release schedule.

Finally, a Wii U game which might give me reason to invest in the console:

Possible Xenoblade sequel? With guns and mechs and shit? Yes please!

Now please a) give it an English localisation b) don't have it turn out to be MMO

Hmm, that games list looks a little dry.
Still, got Nintendo Land to keep me busy and the star coins on Mario to get and ZombiU to get back into :)

Iwata implies he may resign over poor business performance:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.ph ... ostcount=1

I didn't want to make a new thread for it because the recent performance of the Wii U are a huge factor in this calculation and the 3DS numbers weren't THAT bad (Japan to the rescue). Let's hope for a fantastic year or else the Wii U will be remembered as the console who killed the guy who brought us the Wii and the DS.

Not even half of the shipment got sold DURING CHRISTMAS! Rest of of the world looks pretty much the same.

If Iwata is responsible for how poorly Wii U was handled, then that may be a wise decision.

Everything surrounding the launch of Wii U was terrible. They released it practically without games even though they had YEARS to prepare. The marketing was awful, there were hardly any commercials/advertising (there still aren't). Why not? Nintendo has several billion dollars of cash reserves, so it can't be a matter of money. They did very little to set Wii U apart from Wii; most people still have no clue that Wii U is a new system and not just an add-on controller for Wii (or that it even exists). Then there's the issue of the painfully inadequate flash memory of the regular version (8GB, 5 of which are used up by the OS; how nice for selling games online). Last but not least, the system was rushed with a buggy and slow user interface. Again, why? They had so much time and money to get it right.

I am critical of Nintendo mostly because of their anti-consumer region locking and their stale core franchises, but I never expected Wii U's launch to be handled THAT incompetently (on the contrary, I thought it would get a good start and do reasonably well). Except for pricing, they basically made every schoolboy mistake that could be made. Wii U's launch makes the botched launch of PS3 look stellar in comparison.

I wish it'd happen with government. We're stuck with a bunch of real incompetents in Australia. :(

Wii U does indeed look like a miss for me. They've screwed up big time - lack of DVD/Media player support is the least of their worries compared to that bullshit.

My DS XL died also, though luckily just before the one year warranty expired. It was barely used, less than 100 hours I'd wager. The day it died, it was plugged in for a fresh charge, turned it on and played for a few minutes. Turned it off, set it down, then hours later picked it up and it was just dead, no response what so ever.
I was very impressed with Nintendo's return service. Intelligent and articulate phone representative, quick and to the point, I was emailed a shipping slip so that I did not even have to pay postage. Within a couple weeks I was sent a new unit with a sort of apology letter and pledge of quality. The new one has seen about 100 hours of use now, but I've always wondered what the issue was with the first one, and if it may occur with the replacement unit.

Surprised the PS3 is doing so well! I guess European people must really like racing games and Doom clones.

I haven't even seen a WiiU game in the shops, just loads of 2nd hand WiiUs lined up in CEX and Cash Converters. This is a blunder I'm not sure even Nintendo can get out of.

The troll is strong in this one. It's not just Europe; the only places where 360 outsells PS3 are North America and the UK. Globally, PS3 has been outselling 360 for ~4 years in a row. Maybe the rest of the world just didn't fall for the online-gaming and app paygate-scheme and enjoy actually having access to a wider range of exculsives (+ all multiplats), the added value of blu ray, lack of region-locking and proprietary hdds etc.

---

Back on topic: I don't think all is lost for Wii U yet; a slow start isn't the end of the world, but Nintendo really needs to get its ass in gear. They have $10 billion USD of cash reserves. Start agressively advertising and money-hatting Wii U exclusives this instant. Once PS4 and Xbox 3 are out of the gate, things will get a lot harder. Failing to properly make use of the current reprieve would be an unforgivable blunder.

Playstation 3 being region free would only be an advantage if it had any games. Having lots of people buy it really just proves most people are pretty clueless when it comes to videogames. I guess it's fun if you consider having a 13 year old shout racial abuse at you in Generic First Person Shooter 47 over the internet fun.
