I don't think it's a little bug, it makes the game unbearable for many players unless you mute the sound. I've put aside those games until a patch or firmware update comes out. (fingers crossed)
It's not a new flaw either as this is something I've experienced with MKII. It really should have been sorted out by now. The problem clearly lies with Sony (as it affects many developers), RA's just sort of gotten stuck with this shit. It's unfortunate too because they've put so much effort into making the most of these titles.

HUGE SUCCESS!

It arrived today! Looks great, the whole presentation is pretty nice, the manual is appreciate and seeing so much fun packed in a little disk space is cool.

Package came pretty much undamaged, only a small crack on the inside of the box.

Also, I see Crescent Pale Mist art in the little promotional card... Might mean Classic9 games are coming? Would be really interesting. I know, I know, can't reveal details at the moment but one can dream :P

I'm really really happy! And much more confident to go for Suguri now.

And, good god I forgot how freaking hard Hitogata Happa was on Doomsday! Or I'm getting old or it's quite insane...

Gundemonium Collection Sound Issues

Post by worff »

Bought all three titles last week, started playing them this week. Discovered that skipping sound issues make the games pretty much unplayable. It's absolutely unbearable and something that hasn't been a problem...ever. Not since gaming started.

Just wanted to say--avoid the PSN version of these games like the plague. These kinds of performance issues are, quite frankly, inexcusable. I'm running a new 120GB Slim and I have no issues with sound in any other game at all. I've tried tweaking all of my audio settings, but to no avail.

The games *seem* to run fine if I delete the saved game data, and they run fine when I first start them up, but whenever starting them later on, they're completely ruined by this sound skipping issue.

I'm a game reviewer, and I'll be giving all three of these titles low scores because of this problem. These should not have been released.

I will, however, retract my original verdict on the titles if and when a patch is released that fixes these problems permanently. A game should not require finicky workarounds just to be playable. They are subpar ports that pale in comparison to their contemporaries both in gameplay and performance. For instance, I've noticed several 'safe spots' in the games that make stages far too simple. My advice is to buy a Japanese 360 and import Espgaluda. Or just wait until the Saturn shmups start getting released digitally.

I'm extremely disappointed because these were the first hardcore shmups to come to the PS3. But it looks like I'll be recommending people to buy Soldner X instead.

It's a well known fact that all three games featured in Gundemonium Collection don't have this sound skipping issue if you play them on an original PS3 with the 20GB or 60GB HDD setups. Or try changing your PS3's audio output settings to 48kHz and see if that helps (via HDMI or Toslink/digital optical cable setup).

There is already a dedicated GC thread discussing this mentioned topic, worff. Click on this link and post your thoughts on it here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... &start=210

Yes, give the games a low score because of an uncontrollable issue that they can't immediately patch due to Sony's incredibly lengthy approval process--despite the issue not being present when using older PS3s.

It's like all reviewers are set out to either be pseudo-intellectualists, or complete morons.

Well, I fully agree with worff and also think it's unacceptable. All the suggested solutions are not user-friendly. Anyway, this was already discussed in the original Gundemonium thread, not sure if we need another one for this discussion?

Merged the other Gundemonium thread about sound issues into this one.

This should have been fixed before release.

Of the hundreds of PS3 games I've played, these are the *only* ones with this problem. Why do all of the other developers, many of whom are far less skilled, manage to do it right?

No one is saying the problems aren't serious, but it's been clarified over and over again that this was an issue that simply couldn't have been caught during testing and is prohibitively difficult to patch, all thanks to the ridiculous red tape that serves only to stamp out small publishers that can't afford the monthly sacrificial goat Sony demands. I mean, what kind of policy prevents the publisher from choosing who codes their own damn game?

It's a damn shame that the publisher is inevitably the one that takes the blame when there was absolutely nothing they could have done to prevent the problems from happening in the first place.

Well this statement is very arguable. It's what they claim but it's not necessarily the truth. I've played far over a hundred PS3 games (disc and download) and it's the only game where I have encountered this problem. So in my opinion it is very odd and most likely lacks programming experience/skills.

In the end the consumer is the one who paid for a defect product and if it doesn't get fixed, the product simply deserves to receive bad press and end up in poor sales. It's a shame for the nature of the product but a very natural cause.

SO...will this game be released on the European Playstation Store? Or can I just get an American account and use one of those Amazon Cards to buy the game? It's no fun waiting all the time looking at videos...

Weird. I just bought the collection on PSN as soon as it was available for my region, and i haven't run into any of these issues for either of the three games. (40GB PAL PS3, AUS MGS4 bundle). Though people shouldn't take this as somewhat of a confirmation that they work fine on this type of PS3.

Hopefully things can get sorted for those that are experiencing problems, as i just came on to say that this is an absolutely wonderful release. Though I feel as if i should of ordered the PC version instead, but since i had $8.50AUD already in my PSN wallet, i just went ahead with the purchase. ;)

Loving all titles so far, and perhaps in the future I'll seek the boxed PC release. Excellent collection.

EDIT*:
I edited my post before stating that i got the sound skip issue with Hitogata Happa when i played it again tonight, however, i exited the game, deleted all save content for it, and restarted it. Now it works properly every time i play it, i don't get the sound issue anymore. First time i got the issue, i had changed the config for the screen size, but decided to leave all settings on default once i cleared the data.

Had only tiny sound issues on my old stlyle PS3 w/80 Gig HD. nothing real serious. Rockin Android should be commended for localizing these games.

Same here. Those tiny sound issues are barely noticable on my old 40GB PS3 too. They don't ruin the game at all.

have sound skipping some times noticably, other times none.

got a 250 gb slimline btw.

but the skipping isn't 2 annoying inthe game 4 me and a small discomfort for the fantastic controls & really fun games.

Gundemonium, especially, really got me.
more than worth the small price asked 4 it imho. :D

Just wanted to say I'm also having sound issues with these games. I got the collection as soon as I could and I am very excited to play them. I guess I just mute the sound and try to enjoy? I will check back here for a fix. fyi I have a 120gb slim.

Just reviewing these now. Yes the sound is obviously causing an issue for some, but certainly not for everyone (it's fine on my 40 gig ps3 for example). I'll do a caveat and mention the problem, but I'm not changing the score at all.

As an aside I've really enjoyed this collection and its great to see these sorts of games actually getting a Western release. So many other publishers wouldn't bother.

Has the sound skipping issue been figured out? Is there a patch coming or something?

I got a 250GB Slim and from what I've seen the bug will end up affecting me. I'll refrain from buying until this gets fixed.

I haven't checked for a patch, but I'm assuming if there isn't one out by now, there never will be. In my experience, the issue is largely mitigated by making sure you download and install them one at a time.

But this won't solve the issue entirely, right?

Is there any video or something out there where I can listen to this skipping music? I'd like to see for myself how bad it actually is. If it isn't too bad then I might get it anyway.

It varies wildly depending on hardware - I can't really make a video of it myself since deleting and reinstalling each game one by one (to make sure nothing ends up fragmented on the drive) pretty much resolved the issue to the point that if it happens, I hardly notice it.

Ok I hope this helps those who have the skipping audio issues (in my experience it's the BGM).

I've tried what Sara suggested earlier in this thread by installing the 3 games without any download going on.

After that I still got some of the stuttering so I just fiddled around with the PS3 settings. I think these settings work best:

Under the Settings tab...
Music Settings -> Output Frequency: 44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz
Sound Settings -> I have 3 options checked: Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1 kHZ, Linear PCM 2 Ch. 48 kHz and AAC (I think checking AAC finally stopped the stuttering for me, have tested with it on and off)

Of course, if all else fails, I'd probably suggest you put some Touhou mp3s to play as BGM instead :)
