#40 E.D.F. - Earth Defense Force (Jaleco, 1991)
Basic side scrolling shooter where you select one of four weapons before each stage and level them up by destroying enemies. No power ups, no weapon switching during a stage. You can cycle through an increasing number of option formations as you level up, though. A few of these weapons seem like handicaps, like the laser with its pulsing lapses in fire. Even at higher levels some of these weapons seem too weak. The level 3 dungeon theme is great. Hit detection is a little questionable. I prefer the SNES version, to this version's shame.

#39 GunNail (NMK, 1993)
Seems as much like a proto-DonPachi as any Toaplan game of the time, if not more so. I don't like DonPachi. Some of it is really cool, like the road crumbling under the boss as it moves along in screen two. Also, some enemy multiplier for people who want to play NMK games for score.

Awesome NMK games:Rob wrote:There's like 1-2 decent NMK games. I don't get it.
Thunder Dragon 2
Rapid Hero
P-47 Aces
Riot
Half-assed NMK games:
The rest (although I do find the macross games among and few others to be decent enough to be worth playing)
Gunnail is hilarious. The multiplier is higher for the less live you have. So if you want the highest score, then suicide all your lives except your last at the start of each stage.Rob wrote:Also, some enemy multiplier
THE ULTIMATE BALLS REQUIRING SCORE SYSTEM, NOT EVEN THE MANLIEST OF MEN CAN HANDLE IT.
Not even Ketsui comes close.
#38 Nostradamus (Face, 1993)
First, best title screen. A significant improvement over the first Face game on the list. While the first game was a weak stab at a successful formula this game has a little bit of its own style. Dare I say some of the graphics are even inspired. Alien craft shaped like crop circles... explains everything! The one gimmick this game has is a charge attack that doubles as a risky shield before it is released (covers about twice the width of your ship and can be swung front to back - this is needed for some areas of the game). Hitbox could be a little smaller.

Zed Blade is a pretty bland game (with a really dumb scoring system), but it's worth mentioning how fantastic the music is. It's some of Manabu's best work I think.

Rob is secretly rating every game based on hitbox compared to Mars Matrix.

hello Boagman, I'm the one of two peoples with 100% knowledge in this game in the planet (other people is CORVUSCORAX IMU-AT2 from, Japan). I have the 0,0001% of knowledge that you miss. I know the answer for all your questions.boagman wrote:
I know this game probably better than 99.9999% of all people on this planet, with the possible exception of the original team that put it together, and perhaps a guy in Japan. Maybe two. I can probably say with relative safety that if I'm not the best player at it, then I was at one time. I can answer questions about this game that most people wouldn't know, much less even think to *ask*:
1. At what point value do the stars max out, and why does it matter?
2. How does one turn the moving blocks of Stage 6 into moving idols?
3. How does one defeat each and every boss using no bombs?
4. How, in Stage 5, can *both* pickups be gotten from the lava-encased area that quickly erupts by both pickups on opposite sides of the screen?
for exemple:
But, can you answer these questions?
1) how many 1up bonus there are in this game?
2) how many stars there are in this game?
3) how many NOZO bonus item there are in this game?
4) how many "Larva" enemies there are in this game?
5) for score, is important autofire in this game ? yes/no
please aswer.
- For curiosity, which is your better score ?
Because I read this:
really? Therefore in past, your score was better of 5.200.000 pts?I can probably say with relative safety that if I'm not the best player at it, then I was at one time

You forgot to mention the gigantic sailing ship, and two powerups in the first 10 seconds of the actual game (LOLZ)Rob wrote:Gigantic (Ugly) helicopters and stealth bombers and aircraft carriers appearing in the middle of space.
Edit: Oh, I see. You didn't play it long enough to see all the stuff that shows up at the beginning of that first stage
