2-3 is good. But then again I think having a game picked in advance (without voting) is even better. People vote for the stupidest reasons. The voting threads are almost as good as selecting a game from a hat (not a suggestion).

Like I said before

My fav game in the list is actually Gokujyou Parodius. Thing is that my team discussed what would be the best game to be played in a strategic way. Even stuff like "Rob will hate it so he won't play it" was considered (ha ha ha). I don't know if it was a wise choice, but so far I think it was (Gokujyou was our second option, but it won't have won even if all of our team had voted for it, and Salamander 2 was certainly a worse option for us).

So, while that's the first time the game I voted won , it was also the first time I didn't vote for my favourite game.

I like the way the polls are now, I wouldn't change it. And if you change it, people will complain anyway.

Next year let's do 5 weeks of Cave so people can stop crying, Jesus.

I dunno. It could be more due to the fact that Xexex didn't get a full port until recently. After Rob's review with the comment about the girl in the dryer, I thought people would be flocking to it, though. There were a few posts requesting it before the actual voting started too. One reason I feel that Xexex should have been on the list instead of Gradius III is because it is a lesser known game. Also, while Gradius II is much easier than Gradius III, it's generally considered a better game.

Twinbee Yahho was the only vert that made it on the list. I like Konami's horis quite a bit, but I voted for Yahho because I also like that one quite a bit and the only other one I had a home version of was Gradius III, which I don't like as much. If Japangamestock wasn't on vacation and I got the Saturn Parodius pack before the 20th, I probably would have voted for Gokujo, though.

I doubt it. Sexy was also behind Salamander 2 in the votes. There was a chance that others might have voted for Yahho, at least according to Shatterhand's post where he attempted to place votes for the other people on his team in their absence. Not everyone voted for Yahho simply becuase it's a vert. Yahho's style appeals to some, including me. It's not a broken game and I feel it plays quite well.

I disagree with the comments that said that Twinbee Yahho is not arcade like. It's one of the less forgiving Twinbees. It throws away most of the stuff introduced for Pop 'n Twinbee, goes back to 1 hit unless you get hit in the arm kills, there is no ghost bee where you can get your power ups back like Twinbee Da!!, Moreo Twinbee, and Twinbee 3, and it goes back to a bell system where one hit cancels out a power up bell. It's also more frantic than the other Twinbee games.

As for me, I played it a bit more tonight, figured maybe I'll understand it better.

Got into stage 3. Unexpectedly, the screen then shot off to the left, while some huge yellow thing launched by and squashed me at the same time. I still had lives left, but I INSTANTLY lost interest and closed Mame. That's MORE than enough of that for tonight.

I think I've gotten to the "I hate Konami" point now.


Ah well, there is a bright side to everything I suppose: at least at the end of this week I can delete the heck outta the dang thing.

Not everyone is complaining. People are going to complain no matter what the game. Twinbee Yahho is not a game that I should feel like I'm supposed to hate. It's not a broken game and it does many things well. Again, it's not an "everybody-hates-them" game, it's just a game that doesn't appeal to everyone. There is a HUGE difference.

No matter what game gets chosen, there will be complaints. And the people with complaints will always be more vocal than the people who are happily playing away at the game. There's really no reason to post your joy at the choice of game. Though, I guess there's really no point to whining either, but people feel the need to anyways ^_^

Part of why I joined STGT is to play some shooters I might not otherwise have put much time into, or possibly played at all. So anything is fine with me, really. Just ... relax everyone.

I just want to state that while I don't really like TwinBee Yahoo, I doubt I will develop the same level of hatred towards it that I have developed for Blazing Star, the first game in last year's competition, in one week of playing.

Sorry, I dont mean to be overly arguementive, but in my opinion, there's just something downright WRONG with a game that's so filled with rainbows that the damn COLORS can kill you simply by jumbling up the screen with nonsense so that you cant tell what you're doing.

As far as I see it, in a well designed shmup, when you go down, you always KNOW what killed you. Even in the utter chaos of the worst parts of DDP Death Label's craziest bosses, or Mushi's Ultra mode, when I go down, I know WHY I went down.

At least in Mushi I know that purple = bad *grumbles*


Might end up not really posting much of a score in this at all, I hate to say.

Normally Im a very determined person, and usually I dont give up on a challenge, but....

I hit around 800,000, and then SOMETHING will piss me off (it's a different something every time) and then I just go berserk and forget about the bells and attempt to blow the #($* outta anything that moves, regardless of scoring. Then I freak out and hit escape. This is the ONLY shmup that can tick me off like that.


There is at least ONE good point, though: Im beginning to understand WHY I only really play more recent, modern shmups as opposed to alot of the older ones, which, aside from the retro classic types (like Galaga or Gyruss), I just wont even touch. Understanding is a good thing, at least....


Sorry, I'll attempt to be more positive in the future. I'll keep quiet after this, let this topic go other ways.

Unfortunately, in this case, "more positive" probably actually means "not playing this game".

Sorry team, I wont be of any help in this round, I think.

Now, back to the more pleasant confines of Guwange for me.....

As I said before, It's possible to get through Twinbee Yahho without losing your lives. Most of the time, I know what killed me. There is a lot to keep track of, but it doesn't make the game impossible to learn. I don't agree with you on it being a poorly designed game.

It is pretty confusing at first, and you DO have to learn what to watch for.

But really, it's not TOO different from a modern manic. You have to learn how to avoid certain patterns in manics, much in the same way you have to learn what to avoid in say Twinbee Yahhoo. The trick is that the manics make you FEEL like you have a chance when you haven't learned a pattern yet, whereas in Twinbee it's hard to "wing it" through certain spots your first time.

I think it's all just mind-games. You're being tricked into thinking Twinbee is more frustrating =D

Last year I only got to play one week, and it was Dragon Blaze.

Yahho-! is quite like that game, except better. :P

It offers much more freedom, you don't screw an entire play if you happen to miss a fuckin' golden idol... It's less memory based, more forgiving, and offers a way greater range of score possibilities.

These are the facts. Now go and hide behind the "ohh, it's all graphics" complain, I don't care about false arguments.

The only serious criticism I've read so far regards stage 4 colour palette / invisible bullets.

Also, it's interesting to see how much conservative can a vert player become. Gravity sessions aren't good. Wide horizontal scrolling in stage 2 isn't good. Enemy who shot you from behind are no fair. Stage 3 "danger!" parts aren't cool...

Come on guys... If you just want to play a game with zero surprise points, and each level just more difficult than the previous one, perhaps you should try Tetris.

You know, after the past few days I've started to like Twinbee Yahhoo a lot more than before. The score system is pretty good fun to exploit once you get an idea of how the bells work and what to do in each section, and the game is pretty challenging overall. There are some niggles (like gravity, extra-wide screens, memory sections and overly bright backgrounds) that I can let slide, simply because it's a game from 1995 and is purposely designed this way for visual style, and to rip players to shreds.

And rip players to shreds it has. From comments here and in the HS thread, it's taken a few casualties already, with people complaining like girls and threatening to sit out the week.

But then again, I wasn't expecting anything spectacular from about 80% of the registered participants anyway.

Come on, it's not like this game scoring system was screwed up, 99% random or something like that, is it ?
I also am surprised so many people are complaining (not that I really care about the complaints...)

It's actually not as random as you might think ^_^ It can be at times, but once you learn how the bells work, and how to manipulate them in certain sections. It loses more and more of its randomness.

I really liked this game before, and was secretly happy when it got chosen (even though the rest of my team wanted Sexy Parodius), but now that I'm learning more about how the game works, I'm liking it even better. Some the complaints I had don't bother me anymore either. Like the gravity sections (fine with +2 speed), and the wide scroll stage 2 parts (fine with +2 speed and flamethrower -_^). The "what killed me?!" syndrome still hits me once in a while, but it's not as bad as it used to be.

This game might end up creeping into my top 25 shmups of all time for next year :)

Too many haters out there. I think the game is really fun!

Although overall I think Detana Twinbee is a little "tighter" and more streamlined, but they're both great.

While the scoring system is almost up there, there were a number of absolutely puzzling design decisions by Konami, such as how you get sent half a screen upon losing an arm and at the exact moment you gain control, if you happen to be on top of an enemy you're dead. This is totally euroshmup and not the good kind of irritating where you're given the finger.

The colorscheme for Stage 4 is awful. If they had the Garegga bullets in this stage they'd be 15 times more visible than in the game they originally were in. And I can still see those easier in that game.

I was surprised when this was voted in. I'm glad it was though, I'm really enjoying it.

Yeah, there can be irritations (bells + scoring, cats, that idiot who punches you on level 3) but overall it's a good blast. There are plenty of challenges to be met and lots of fun to be had.

What does the pink bell do?
....and where is michael on stage 4?????!!!!!!

In a competition of around 130 people, comparing the 16th and 27th place scores to see the scoring differences is not nearly as impressive as comparing the 16th and 107th place scores. If there was scoring balance between the top and bottom end of the table, then you'd have a point. As it stands, taking the difference between two scores around ten places away from each other is not indicative of scoring balance.

And this game has quite a low scoring limit anyway.

The story is that Grand Duke Nonsense has overthrown Queen Melody of mysterious land in an effort to turn the entire world into mysterious land! You need to restore the old order and save the world.

The guy in red is Ace, Queen Melody's royal guard, and he thinks you're trying to harm the queen, that's why he fights against you.

Later he realizes you're on his side and he helps you defeat Grand Duke Nonsense.

Ace's ship is the Shooting Star, and it is one of the selectable ships in Sexy Parodius.

Ace seems to be the personal guard, or either the ace pilot of Queen Melody's army (the orange-haired chick put in jail at the beginning).

The pink-haired fairy (Flute, iirc) ask Twinbee and Winbee for help, but he doesn't know of this and think you're the bad guy.
