Even Jennifer Connelly couldn't save the remake and I love her. We're going to get married someday, y'know?

Getting the money is not the problem. She just doesn't know what she's going to have to do to get it.

It wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't feel the need to explain the obvious every time something happened.

Okay, some people might think I'm a bit nuts for this, but hear me out...
Project X

This movie is insane.
It's not insanely good, don't get me wrong - it's not a ^ "Modern Masterpiece" - it's just a movie about kids partying. But it was way more intense than I expected. The general premise is trite, all about getting pussy and respect from your peers, but then I doubt anyone bought a ticket expecting existentialist philosophy (although it skims this, depending on how you look at it.)
It's basically Cloverfield, with the monster being replaced by a monster party. It's not even that funny, although it has its moments; but what impressed me was how accurately the film portrayed the party itself. It was part film, part documentary, part music video: but it had incredible energy and momentum. The outcome is obscene, but the actual partying has a very impressive level of believability owing to the way it's shot, structured and edited. It's a good exercise for digital video in cinema, too, especially since it chops in stuff literally shot on phone cameras by members of the (quite large) cast. The mind boggles as to how they made it for only $12 Million; that's chump change by Hollywood standards.
It's sexist, in bad-taste, puerile and it glorifies substance abuse, but I have a feeling most of the critics don't realise the movie wasn't aimed at people who are too old to remember what it was like to live it up.
I suppose I was expecting the same run of the mill house party movie, but this genuinely made me feel like I'd stayed up all night and wrecked it with a bunch of strangers, done all kinds of drugs and fondled some teen titties. That's not bad for no-brainer.
So yeah, I'm going against the grain on this one, and I'm willing to shoulder barge the criticism because I believe, for what it is, it has some value.

I watched this last night. Awesome!! Some of the best fight choreography I've seen in a long time. Loved the over the top violence, I almost want to watch it and count how many throats got slashed.emphatic wrote:The Raid Redemption - 4/5.

Rewatched The Shining last night. Amazing movie, but I hoped I would understand the scene with the guy in the bearsuit blowing the business guy. I still don't. What does it mean?

Re: Movies you've just watched
The background of that scene is in the novel, but not the film. Basically they're two more ghosts from the hotel's past. In detail, both the fursuit guy (it's meant to be a dog, at least in the book, though it sure looks like a bear in the film...) and the old man appear at the "party" Jack attends, where the reader hears the old guy is a former owner of the hotel and the fursuit his young lover. Who's apparently dressed like that as some kind of demeaning game for the old guy's satisfaction. (tiny print in case you're planning to read the novel, which unfolds pretty differently)
Without that info it's impossible to make any sense of the BJ scene it in the film except as more of the general craziness manifesting around Wendy at that point.
And a sublime WTF moment from Kubrick, with the distant "is that... is he...?" shot followed by a crash-zoom into the face and that unnerving noise. I rewatched the movie a couple years back - just remembering the absolute depth of insanity it reaches makes me want to see it again!

Where Eagles Dare
If what I've read is accurate, Derren Nesbitt (SS Major von Hapen, who enjoys reminiscing about Dusseldorf) is just as smug in real life. And, of course, there's Richard Burton as well, and his famous creepy smile after wrecking some Germans (seen at least a few times in the film). Clint Eastwood gets plenty of opportunities to grimace. Also - whoa shit they are climbing on the cable car's arm what the hell that's crazy.
Terribly implausible (to the point that the Germans are just about willingly queuing up to die), but it has its moments. Interesting for being a mostly fondly remembered experiment in action drama. Not bad really. But a request before I leave: If you ever have another of 'these things' can you keep it an all-British affair?
Edit: Don't read this unless you've seen the movie. Once you have, you might find it really funny.

Project X was a lot better than expected, even if it is just mostly a party montage. We were seriously hyped up when we left the theater! The cast was TERRIBLE though, I fucking hated the jerky friend. I really did like the interaction with the 'social outsider' that was doing the 'filming'. Fun movie, and I'm grateful that I have been to parties like this.
Chocolate is dope! The Bruce Lee bit was adorable. This one is actually pretty special as far as martial arts movies go. The girl is very impressive. Be sure to watch with a bunch of friends so you can freak out at the final battle, and well... All of the coreography. I wasn't too fond of the girl's second movie, Raging Pheonix. Dance fighting is kinda stoopid.
Men In Black 3 was boring.
Prometheus, ummm... Not sure what to think. Gorgeous at least.
Snow White and the Huntsman was pretty decent.
The Sound of My Voice, got lucky and saw this in the theater, loved it! (I think I already posted that, but this was surprising.)
Babylon A.D. I like this movie and don't really get why it's hated on.
Overboard, watched this last night with the gf, good old' comedy with Jack Burton and Goldie Hawn.
*posting from my phone, so there is prolly mad typos yo.

Re: Movies you've just watched
As I wrote in the Prometheus thread, the only films I'm going to the theatre of late are those by Ghibli, Cohen bros. Werner Herzog and Wes Anderson. That said, I just got back from the charming Moonrise Kingdom which is very good, but not quite great. The teen actors do a great job in their roles and there are some truly magical Wes Anderson moments, but many merely OK moments. Never really connected with the Bill Murray or Bruce Willis characters, but Edward Norton made a good scout leader/math teacher.
Anyway, this film is all about nostalgia and mood; something that Wes seems to be completely immersed in. Bottom line: I enjoyed life aquatic and fantastic mr. fox more (I love those films), but this is better than The Darjeeling Limited which I really didn't enjoy.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Sometimes you get ratings right Tom, this was one of them. What I liked was how honest it was. No-one really got hurt (except the dealer, natch) and everyone had a good time. If you're comparing it to Cloverfield - nah, albeit if you wanted to then the party wasn't the monster, the dealer was. It's the Human Traffic of the 2k10's. Anyone that doesn't get it has never partied, and the world would be a better place if everyone could just blow out and lose the attitude.Skykid wrote:Okay, some people might think I'm a bit nuts for this, but hear me out...

Re: Movies you've just watched
Bit of a running marathon today (with a timeout to visit the zoo), usually I can't stand to sit through a whole movie so I decided to keep some momentum going:
Under Siege (Gary Busey and yeah)
Under Siege 2 (actually enjoyed this one more, except for being painfully aware of the "sassy black sidekick" stereotype showing up here, although that part worked out well. The technobabble shit took the movie down a notch though. Best "bad guy loses his grip" scene this side of Total Recall, though it seemed pretty gratuitous at that point...)
The Untouchables (never watched the whole thing until now, surprisingly; a few things stuck out badly, mainly Ness's psuedo-psychopath moments and how all the Mounties went unscathed despite being fired upon, not that I wished them any harm of course)

^Yup Under Siege 2 is pretty great.
I had been searching for Jules Verne's 1967 Rocket to the Moon for about 30 years since I saw it as a child. I had given up, then 3 days ago it appeared on DVD.

Starring Terry Thomas, Gert Frobe & Lionel Jeffries.
Lionel Jeffries was in the better 1964 First Men in the Moon, which I also have.
Its not great but it scratched a long-standing itch.

Cliffhanger. You know, not a bad movie.
I forgot to mention that I realized I'd seen part of Under Siege 2 before, the famous "that's not Mace..." scene. It's good to know where it comes from.
I'll look out for that film. Next up is probably going to be this 1941 movie, just for the heck of it.

I love the line where Qualen (Lithgow's character - yeah, that's how it's spelled...) says: "Nice try, but I never underestimate the power of loyalty when it comes naturally - not like the kind that has to be bought," but "He'll be the one wearing a helicopter" takes the cake. Or, for that matter: "Sacrifice." I can't really accuse Lithgow of hamming it up here, aside from the accent, most of his lines, and the obligatory bulging eyes scenes (i.e. things outside an actor's control really) he keeps it under control.
I like how the FBI isn't totally incompetent in this one! That guy at the beginning was a badass.
Some good cinematography in this one - I've been seeing a lot of mountainscapes in the recent films I've watched and the aerial photography has been great throughout.
Third entry for laughs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolt_gun
As far as beefs with the movie - obviously the climbing stuff was over-the-top, but this is the film that set the record for a most expensive stunt (the aerial transfer), and then you have Hal's rage but the actor mostly plays it straight and it's nice to see a person who is basically confused but honest underneath not get destroyed by their emotion in a film like this. An interesting reversal of the opening scene plays out amongst the bad guys, in a way.
