Jesus. My life has been pretty insane lately. I completely didn't have the time for myself, let alone trying to break my PB on DDP. And I already forgot my route… again.

Anyway, welcome aboard, one and all!

Pardon my curiosity, but what do you think of Touhou?

Hi All,
I've been playing shmups on and off since I was kid. The first one I really enjoyed was on the TurboGrafx - I don't even remember the name anymore, but you played as bugs/beetles. It was colorful and the upgrades awesome.

I don't come on this thread as much as I should, but a big welcome to you all. Always nice to see new people enjoying this beloved genre. I know these games and even this community can be intimidating at first, but most people here are chill and will answer questions about the genre and specific games.

I was curious about this game and tried looking it up. Was it possibly Cyber Core by chance?

Am i wrong or...is it the console with the highest number of SHMUPS that has ever existed?
even if many seem "forgotten", with the exception of the best-known arcade ports.

Hello everyone.
New here.
I’m mostly a casual player of Cave on ps4. I’ve been getting into playing more seriously recently. I would like Ketsui to be my first 1cc.

There might be more on Switch or Steam now all told, but before the current environment the PC Engine was definitely #1, it has more than 100 shooters on it.

Good luck! Ketsui is amazing but also a very difficult mountain to set for your first climb. The arrange mode on PS4's a manageable challenge though.

Hello this is loopyeddie, I’ve been around for a while, but not very active recently. I can no longer log into my old account and I no longer have the email address to fix it.

I’m fine with having a new account, but can’t access the buy sell forum. Is that locked behind posts? I have to unload a bunch of premium shit to you guys!

Ok, looks like I can get into the sell forum now. I’ll be posting some stuff soon - I’m pairing down to the bare minimum. The main things I’m trying to sell are the 3 27” Hitachi CRTs. Send me a message if your interested. I’m not trying to get top dollar, I just need them gone

Hi all,

Hi from Florida USA. Shumps were my games of choices as a kid. Thunder Force II (Genesis) got me into the genre as a kid, and the side scrolling levels are still a bit of a gold standard for me.

I after the Genesis I stopped gamming until the Dreamcast, which as we know had very few shumps in USA during its standard life time. Now many years later, I am jumping back into shumps and I thought I would start with the DC games I missed. Currently enjoying Ikaruga, Gunbird 2, and Zero Gunner.

Based on what I have been playing and enjoying on the DC, I think Psikyo may be my style. Is there a recommended order of going through the Psikyo classics? (Strikers and Dragon Blaze). I have never played any of them yet.

Best,
Jack

Welcome aboard! Sengoku Ace, Strikers 1945 II, and Dragon Blaze are a decent beginning/middle/end timeline. They're all tough games, but their latter STGs (GB2, Strikers 1999, and especially their finale, DB) got decidedly hardcore. So it's probably a good idea to familiarise yourself with the earlier stuff.

You might also consider adding the unmistakably formative Sonic Wings, which Shin Nakamura directed before leaving to form Psikyo.

I'd say Strikers 1945 II has the best balance between their earlier and later titles. Good gateway title. Sadly it never got an accurate console port, though the Japanese PS1 release is a passable facsimile. (the Western localisation isn't recommended; it forces you to play in the rearranged 4:3 mode, which is only optional in JP)

Zero Gunner 2 is something of an outlier, both in game design and difficulty level. Quite approachable, as is its arena STG counterpart, Cannon Spike. (both of which, being Naomi hardware games, have excellent DC ports!)

btw, If Saturn's an option, give Hyper Duel and Blast Wind a look; easily recommendable to any fan of Tecno Soft's MD canon.

Instantly thought Cyber Core, too. Which I'd somehow convinced myself was a Namco game... must've mixed it up with Final Blaster. Always interesting to see Alfa's pre-Shikigami days. :o

Thanks for the welcome! Currently my only hardware options are sega MD, MD/CD, DC. I may invest in a Saturn if the shump bug sticks around :)

I am kind of an old fart, and after being away from shumps (and gaming) for over 20 years, it feels like an entirely new genre. I feel at home in a few of the DC shumps like (GB2, ZG2, etc), but others are just so weird, I feel like I am playing them wrong (like Shikigami no Shiro II). I guess I will figure it out as I go. The Psikyo games on the DC all seem like familar territory to me, just bigger and better! Lots to learn!

Hello everyone! IHello everyone! I'm a casual STG player from China named Yaga, and I've been playing STG for 8 years
Since I don't know English! So I used translation software here to convert my Chinese to English.
So there will be some parts of the text that are difficult for you to understand, sorry!
I usually like to play all kinds of different types of shump and find all kinds of rare shump tasting games! :D I'd appreciate it if you could provide some rare shumps or non-danmaku doujin shumps that can be played on various computers!!
Due to personal health reasons, I can't play some of the shumps! For example, some barrage shump can't be played because the bullet is too flashy to withstand (。 So I mainly play non-barrage shump!
Anyway, please give me a lot of advice!

First Time Poster Long Time Lurker.

I owe a lot of my child hood memories to taking the bus into the city to find obscure SCHMUPS in various Arcades and just watching “Older Kids” play them. I have an incredible visual memory of all these experiences and games. I remember every single one I ever saw in the 1986 - 1996 period of my childhood. Favourites that I go back to are Saint Dragon, R Type, Darius, Un Squadron, Forgotten Worlds as well as the console shooters like Thunder Force 2 - 3, Axelay etc. Countless chocolate bars and candy consumed while hovering behind people who were better at these games than I was at the time getting lost in the music and futuristic worlds the characters were fighting through. Going back to these games gives me real solace and a real curiosity to seek out more and experience them for the first time giving me that wonderful feeling I would get back in those days.

As time goes by I find that these types of games are really what hold up the most as I go back to them.
I will take this opportunity to thank this community as a whole to help me further enjoy these games.

: )
