Rampart - Woody Harrelson plays a discunctional cop. Very good, very depressing, just my kind of movie lol

Watched Chronicle yesterday. It was surprisingly good, but I had no expectations what so ever. Most of the movie where they explore their 'talent' it reminded me a lot of those ratchet and clank commercials  And the final battle was just over the top crazy. The story is basically the same as in Akira where Tetsuo gets drunk with power.

There's a connection between PF and Kill Bill Vol. 2 in that there are two characters whom are brothers by birth. Can you find out whom they are?

Well I would have been either 13 or 14 when it came out in 94, depending on the month.
They didn't even care how old you were back then. Friends and I would see R rated movies with no issues all the time. I remeber seeing Robocop 2, Total Recall, Tales from the Darkside, Predator 2 ect, all unsupervised and not having to ask for a ticket to something else to sneak in.

Kidz today....
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah, but we had to jack off to still pictures most of the time, or maybe deteriorated VHS tape. Fast forwarding -- total boner kill. They got it easier today overall, I'm convinced.

Same actor, Michael Madsen, but different character. He plays 'Budd' in Kill Bill, but his other Tarantino character is Mr. Blonde, or Vic Vega, from Reservoir Dogs. There was some talk of a Vega Brothers movie at one point. Tarantino's formula is getting kind of tired but I really liked Inglourious Basterds, especially chapter 1.

Yeah, getting into an 18 in the UK when you were itty bitty wasn't really doable unless you had stealth camo, which I did on one occasion when I sneaked into Alien 3 with a mate.

Actually it was his mum who came up with the plan: she figured out that Alien 3 was on right after a kids movie called Freddie F.R.O.7 in the same screen, so all we had to do was hide at the back (it was a huge theatre and early afternoon) while they switched the reels. Worked like a charm, the only problem was we had to sit through Freddie F.R.O.7, which I recall being the worst thing ever.

Will have to watch this, one of my favourite TV shows "The Shield" was based on the same real-life events. It's like The Sopranos with a legitimately competent and dangerous protagonist. Starts off a bit "villain of the week" albeit fun, but once Vic's little clubhouse starts to crumble around him midway through the series it picks up real intensity.

Vic: "And one other thing... your ex-wife's pussy tastes like sweet butter." <-- LMAO

Image

Erm, ontopic... ah, I watched The Grey with Liam Neeson the other night. Okayish effort in the "unforgiving survival film" stakes, but nothing special.

2001: A Space Odyssey.

Gaaaaah. I stopped watching an hour and ten minutes in, nearly nothing was happening. I liked the bit with the early man, I liked when things actually happened, but the spaces in between things actually happening all reminded me of the elevator scene in Evangelion. The pace wasn't merely plodding, it was almost stagnant. Which is a shame, because there were some really cool bits [notably, how realistically everything was portrayed, although the completely blue Earth bothered the crap out of me until I remembered when this movie was filmed].
This movie is considered a masterpiece of filmmaking, but I can't really stand to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and then I saw Dr. Strangelove, which was just brilliant.

My mistake - "inspired by the same scandal" is a better way of putting it. The Shield and several other movies/shows were inspired by the police corruption scandal involving the LAPD's Rampart Division - the show was originally going to be called "Rampart." I don't know if any of The Shield's characters or events are directly based in fact, but it definitely used the Rampart scandal as a premise and springboard. The Strike Team was modelled on a real-life LAPD division involved in the scandal, for instance.

I love 2001, it's one of my favorite films of all time. The trick to viewing it is to put yourself in the zone. You want no interruptions or outside distractions. You want that shit in 1080 with surround sound, and you want to have all of your snacks and drugs right by your side. Make sure you're well pee'd, close the blinds and make sure it's low lighting. Turn off your phone and lock your girlfriend in the car with the windows cracked or rolled up if you don't really like her. Now recline ever so slightly, take a deep breath, press play.

Fuck yeah, The Shield. It was always kind of cheezy in its amped up race/gang stuff (especially when compared to the sobriety/realism of say, The Wire), but it just turned into this awesome Shakespearean drama. Great writing. One of the few shows where shaky cam didn't bother me either.

I saw an original 2001 print at the Seattle Cinerama several years ago. Sadly this predated my smoking days but it was still an amazing experience. Imo it and Alien are the two most advanced sci-fi films ever made, in terms of quality, ideas, presentation. They don't pander.

Film I recently saw: Hobo with a Shotgun. Old Rutger Hauer looks and acts disturbingly like my Dad, haha... the movie was "eh." Cool through-going aesthetic, but the shock wears off after 30 minutes and it was actually kind of boring, all told. Were I 20 again it would probably seem cooler.

Hell of a ride - couldn't have put it better than blackoak, the style is fairly outlandish but the human drama gradually becomes first-rate. It just keeps gaining gravity and momentum.

I marathonned both last summer when I had a few months and was in the mood for 00s US cop shows - the difference between them is marked to say the least, heh. Always glad to find others who appreciated both!

2001: a few peeps may be bored by it, but this doesn't detract from the fact it is one of the best films ever made. Stay away from Solaris - another one of the best films ever made (and one of my all-time favourites) 8)

+1 for Solaris and really pretty much anything by Takovsky. Really wish they'd put Stalker on blu-ray.

I'm going to drink some beers and watch Re-Animator later tonight with a friend.

I've been reading a collection of H.P Lovecraft stories and just finished Herbert West : Reanimator.

After finding out there was a movie made about it I decided to order the DVD. I hope it's good.

Man, that reminds me that there's a whole host of 80s horror flicks I need to watch. Re-Animator, Scanners, The Fly, Hellraiser, Basketcase, etc... I really missed out during my youth.. :? Lemme know how it goes with Re-Animator..

Watched Re-animator myself for the first time, also after going on an HPL kick (haven't read that short story itself, though). Enjoyed it a lot - it's the kind of horror flick that knows it's a bit ridiculous and has fun with that, without throwing in the towel for outright goofiness. Some pretty unnerving stuff in there, brrrr dead people. Jeffrey Combs is fucking hilarious, so many inappropriate one-liners. Also Barbara Crampton is hawt!

Also watched From Beyond right afterward, also HPL-based and with the same director plus Combs and Crampton. Again, good stuff - definitely worth a look if you end up liking Re-animator, burgerking.

The Fly (1986) is brilliant, rancor. A body-horror milestone from Cronenberg with great lead performances from Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. The only thing that's dated about the film is her poofy hairdo, the practical effects surrounding Goldlbum's disintegration are still horrifying and the human aspect is timeless. Hellraiser likewise is one hell of an s&m-themed horror show. Scanners is nowhere near as strong as those two, the body of it doesn't live up to the iconic opening scene or the gruesome climax. Michael Ironside rescues it mostly, Revok is a great antagonist. The lead actor is either literally brain-damaged, masterfully portraying brain damage, or just a really shitty actor.

Seen it, thanks for the recommendation anyway though! Good HPL cinema isn't easy to come by... liked it quite a bit, the expansions it made to The Shadow Over Innsmouth's story made sense and magnified the sense of mortal futility you'd expect from a movie about HPL's mythos.

The HPL Historical Society's "The Whisperer In Darkness" is quite good too, I think, as is their earlier treatment of "The Call of Cthulhu." Even better are their "Dark Adventure Radio Theatre" audio plays. I posted about them earlier in this thread, definitely worth a listen.
