Oy... Daniel Johnston... Eh, don't get me started.
Ya know, the record store (Sound Exchange) that was in that space was really great. They had shit tons of...just about everything. They also had a display of Daniel Johnston tapes near the register that no one ever looked at. It was truly a sad day when that shop closed up to make way for...a California-themed fast food joint. *retches violently and uncontrollably*
Heh, sorry. Ignore the old man's rants. On topic:
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Goatsnake - Trampled Under Hoof
Mickey and the Soul Generation - Iron Leg
Rants are always good, and I also loved this album this week.MadSteelDarkness wrote:Ignore the old man's rants.

My favorite thing this week was a daily listen to:
Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry -- hated it when I first heard it, now I think it's amazingly good. That doesn't happen too often.
That's the real stuff.JoshF wrote:buttrock

Nice one.unsane wrote:Cult of Luna - [all 4 albums] (post-metal)
The Strawbs - Ghosts
Mostly for the track, 'The Life Auction', the rest of the album is very dodgy (but that's typical for The Strawbs'.)

I still like Jane Doe the most out of all their albums.Pretty tight band to see live too.
they recently opened for mastodon right near me, but i couldn't get the night off work. one of the few shows coming through my city that would have been worth seeing too
stuff i'm listening too:
69 eyes - angels / devils : really lame, and kinda fun
catharsis - passion : can't believe how great they are
unsane - lambhouse : compilation, but i can't find the full length albums, so this will do for now
celtic frost - morbid tales : fun as hell, i like to sing on the walk home from work
voivod - war and pain : really like it, its a terrible mess
agoraphobic nosebleed - pcp tornado : fun, quick listen (crazy about the bonus tracks) "thinning the herd" is a favorite
venetian snares - hospitality : really enjoying it. wondering if anyone can give me some guidance as far as highlights of his catalogue

also looking for some high-quality classical "best of" compilations of particular composers, i know i like some of the obvious ones (mozart, chopin, and blah). welcoming any suggestions as well.

Classical is really big. Far less approachable than jazz even. The biggest problem is getting a grasp of the whole picture--namely what the different periods sound like--and then beginning to hone in on artists. No single collection is going to be of much help in that regards, plus, crappy/cheap compilations are often of little good if you end up hearing a sub-par performance and disliking based on that, rather than on the actual quality of the composition.
I have recently seen a whole run of 3 disc sets (I think on EMI) that are significant recordings (often good introductory pieces) by a lot of great composers. If I new nothing about classical, these would make a nice entry point, though it would still cost a couple hundred dollars to pick up all of them (in the world of Classical, that's pretty cheap.)
A more thrifty alternative is to either go to a library with a listening station or even directly to music stores that have listening stations and keep listening until you find a sound that is getting close to what you like.
Yet another alternative would be to read a book ('not a magazine, not a sport's page'...haha, I jest) as there are many good primers to classical. These can often serve as check-lists or give you hints as to what artists you might consider exploring.
Then there is the only real solution, and that is that you pick yourself up some Bach because you can't go wrong with Bach and anyone who tells you they don't like Bach are gay. Bach had like 17 kids so he was kinda like the kind of man that other men are made from and set the standards way the hell up there such that the rest of us rather insignificant in comparison. Well, the truth is that picking up his sonatas and partitas for for violin, goldberg variations, well-tempered clavier (all three parts), and the mass in b minor to boot wouldn't be a bad, micro introduction to the brilliance of Bach.

Presently discovering My Dying Bride's discography. In an alternate universe this is what Metallica now sounds like instead of having veered off course since Load.
Latest faves:
- The Dreadful Hours (sample)
- The Angel and the Dark River (sample)
It's Doom Metal, but the name is misleading, it's pretty soft music. The linked Dreadful Hours song is incredible. It gives me goosebumps, and gets me to the verge of tears. It's exceedingly rare for music to be so beautiful to me as to have the latter effect.
