I'd guess that the beams in question "sweep" in your wake as you move, sort of like the Type 2 and 4 lasers in Gradius V. The second player appears to have a wider formation...I wonder if that's a character-based difference or if it's selectable like the Trace and Formation options were in the first? Are there different shot types as in the first too? I also wonder if either player can select either character, or whether they'll take the (stupid) approach from Ibara which screws you if one joystick doesn't work.

Guess we'll know more once the "system" page is up.

国を守るために立ち上がったのは、ラーサの第一王子・アキ。
アキは恐獣を従え、甲獣相手に戦いを挑みました。
戦いは長期化しました。
一体退けても、すぐにまた別の甲獣が襲ってくるからです。
次から次へと現れる甲獣……。
その原因を突き止めるため、アキは一人、甲獣たちの神が棲むと言われる
シンジュが森へと旅立ったのでした。

アキが国を空けてしばらくして、甲獣の攻撃はやみました。
けれど、アキは戻ってきません。

女王ラーサは、愛する息子の帰りを待ちました。
気が遠くなるほど長い月日を待ちました。
数多い王子の中でも、勇敢で聡明なアキは女王にとって特別でした。
自分の跡を継ぐのはアキしかいない。
アキはきっと帰ってくる。
全てが解決しアキが国へ戻ったら、王位を継承させようと心に決めていました。

しかし、シンジュが森の捜索隊からもたらされたのは非情な報告でした。
アキはホシフリの里の娘レコによって殺されたというではありませんか。

She rides on her friend Kiniro, a shelled beast of beetle type.

A beast of the dragon type who knew Palm since he was little.
