Kind of a stats freak so i couldn't resist compiling the data.

tspan - avg - stdev - median
2005 - 25.1 - 6.1 - 24.5 - chart
2007 - 24.3 - 6.0 - 23 - chart
Total - 24.7 - 6.0 - 23 - chart

People who posted twice in one year and/or in both years were counted properly.

That's as detailed as it's gonna get short of a full survey or having everyone's DOB.

Holy shit! People here are quite "old", I guess all the teens are tied into MMORPG's or FPS's. I'm such a rebel.

Its mainly because 2D shoot'em ups had their heyday from the 80s to about 1992, so the older generation of arcade goers would know them best. Having said that, 99% of those guys are gone. Very few of us left.

The average age here seems to be 24 though, so the explanation for that is errr.....? Maybe inquisitive guys who found 2D shooters on the net, or guys who found 2D shooters by way of mainstream releases like Ikaruga and Gradius V, or PS2 owners who bought Espgaluda and DDP DOJ. I'm not entirely sure, but it would be an idea for each person to not only post his age here, but also to post how he found the genre  .

I think you're absolutely right on that one  . The current teenagers are more likely to be into Call of Duty type FPS's.

Those that are 24 now still witnessed the peak of 8- and 16-bit eras, though (since they were active in 1990-1995, when the most good 2D games were still easily available).

Lotsa olds people in here. Why does it feel like it's full of 13 year olds?

Because it's the internets.

My birth year is 1983.

How I got into the genre is kind of weird, since there was a HUGE hiatus. Way back in the day I used to play Zaxxon, Legendary Wings, Captain Skyhawk, 1942, and a couple others. I liked them, but they weren't by any means favorites. Once the 16-bit era came about, they completely fell off my radar aside from random plays of arcade games (like Aerofighters or something), but I didn't get to play at arcades very often at all. Then with the release of Ikaruga and the making of friends who were into the genre, things went downhill and now I'm a full-fledged shmup-addict =)
