Heh, I think I have a list of at least 200 games I want to buy, some worth 400 or 500$ alone.
(Yes I'd buy a 500$ genesis or famicom game over a PS4)
Just need two or three lives to complete the game library of my dreams.

I have a massive list of games. But I'm trying to stick to a budget of £150. There are a lot of games I have left out. And I'm sure that my list will change by Boxing Day.

After a few days with my PS4 I can certainly report that it is a fine purchase, of course that's easy for me to say since mine is not broken. I wonder what the failure will be once the dust settles. Resogun is great, games like Killzone and NBA2k14 look pretty impressive, and it is the best Blu Ray movie player in my home.

I really hope it becomes the Neo Shmup home that 360 was. I can't see why not.

Good that we count on the mods to keep the console wars at a minimum.

I am happy to wait four plus years until the slim model is released and there are games I want to play available, like I did with the PS3 and 360. Launch hardware never seems to last the duration of its generation. I currently have more games available to me than I could play in a lifetime, I am in no rush.

I would share your sentiments, if not for the fact that MGS is due out within 1-1.5 years. And that FF XV looks so gorgeous.

Meh.

We've been waiting for Zone of the Enders 3 for 10 years and now what ? Another MGS... :?

And FFXV may look impressive but it's nothing like the j-rpg everyone has been begging squarenix to release for ages.

F* this shit. Not worth the money and the time. Not even in 4 years.

RPGs aren't a big enough genre for them to recoup if publishers invest mega budgets into their titles. Even if Sqenix made a AAA game that harked back to the FF's of old, it would never ever recoup. The market's just not big enough unfortunately. Hence why RPGs are now centred around handhelds.

As for MGS... I prefer it infinitely more than Zoe.

That's what many media say and it is just sad that it's become the common belief.
Or should I say most big japanese game development companies stopped believeing in their own forte and switched to the western business and marketing model.
Probably thinking they would make more money.

From the beginning they have built empires with their own style and video game culture, not by imitating stuff westerners do better.
Video gaming is on the decline in the East because it's sold its soul and is being punished with poor sales.

Seriously, for 12 years its like in every friggin' article, every damn comment on any website has been about about 'well okay... but please next time bring us a real major j-rpg, not a hollywood show nor a shitty mobile game'.

Straying so far from the customer's expectations, generating so much criticism, can only result in delcine in sales and profit.

As for MGS, they're all ok games, but we have seen this so many times and damn I'm tired of all this 'badass military dude' religion.
I'm sure they believe it 'fits' the audience more than mechs and sci-fi.

I miss epic fights in super-powered fighting mechs, sci-fi that goes totally overboard like in the 80's and 90's.
I miss deep, insanely crafted and imaginative fantasy worlds that tell fantastic stories. To hell with D&D/LOR soul-less copypasta and online crap.

There's no hope I know. Previous gen saw the rise of video game mediocrity, with the new one it will skyrocket.

I'm sorry, you can't have that. It's nothing but gun and sports games all the way down, here on out.

The art assets of "next gen" require budgets in the tens of millions. In order to have a prayer of making profit, only the blandest piles of crap with the widest appeal are viable. Basically, it's no different than the average Facebook game.

Monster Hunter and Pokemon will still be massive powers, but at the end of the day any breakout franchise is going to have a ceiling as high as Persona 4's - around a million sales. It's a great gaping hole for bottom feeding indies to exploit though.

Possibly the most cringe inducing quote of this generation, by a Square employee discussing US focus groups seeing whether Nanashi no Game would be worth localizing:
"We talked to a focus group and they thought it wasn’t good for the market, so we didn’t do it. Maybe as a downloadable title it’s possible." I was surprised since Japanese and Korean horror movies were on the rise, so I asked Tokita to elaborate. "The opinion was you couldn’t shoot anything. Maybe we shouldn’t have been too concerned about it."

You know I think this last generation I enjoyed alot more indie titles than AAA games.

I am ok with this.

I actually think the best thing that could happen to gaming is a big crash al'a 1983 or whatever it was, and bring game budgets back into reality. I think then we'd have alot more creativity going on when the stakes of failure are alot lower.

Then again I don't want to bitch about the state of modern gaming because I still think there's a ton of good stuff out there.

You're right there's still some good games being made, I don't really mean to send all devs along with the games they've made this past decade to the oven.

It's just like well... the middle class of video game development died and we're stuck with the luxury production from a few industry overlords at the top, and tons of mediocre to average stuff at he bottom, made by poor artisans and crooks who will never cross the castle's gates no matter how hard they strive to.

It's like in society, there's almost nothing left between the castle and the slums.
And I loved what was made in between.

PS:We don't need a crashn we need a war ! :x

Love where this thread is going. We've all talked forever about what has happened to the state of video gaming, but it is summed up so well in the last few posts, and it is a problem I worried about when everything went to huge cinematic 3D games. Basically AAA titles cost HUGE SUMS to produce; what I didn't see coming was the total lock out of the mid budget titles. I feel like all the other arguments (casualizing, etc.) miss the real thing which was the pure economy of games and how Xyga says, there's nothing left between the castle and the slums. That's the real problem with video games these days.

I still blame the aging population. Japan is becoming drab, quickly. Not just w/ games... they're getting their cocks smoked in electronics, too. Sad. We're just not seeing the creativity come out of Japan that we used to.

You could probably write a dissertation on why. The economy in general (not just games) is in the shit house.

Why yes I have up to 3, and of course I won't compare MGS to COD idiocy.
It's just that I've seen enough of this rambo-with-a-really-thick-plot stuff.
Kojima is just as good with sci-fi so why more MGS ? It's getting old.

Kojima fully intended to walk away from the series after MGS 2, but Konami kept dragging him back in.

There`s a common misconception that Zone of the Enders is a brain child of Hideo Kojjima. It isn`t. He is the series` producer and that`s that. The 2nd Runner/Anubis(the ZoE game that actually matters) was directed, designed and written by Shuyo Murata who also co-directed MGS4 and co-wrote MGS2-3 and Peace Walker.

Don't get me wrong MGS is great, but they're obviously doing more because it's a long-time high grossing franchise and a sure money-maker.

The first year following the launch of new consoles is always the same, there's not much money, not much effort put into original - new - stuff.
Most of the budget goes into whatevergame we've played before + 1 digit (but with more pixels!)

@Jonathan Ingram: then kudos to Murata, now if Kojima would let him do one more...
