Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I came here to mention that Kite is getting a US Bluray release September 11(!). One of my favorite OVAs. I'm amazed that Media Blasters is still kicking after losing over half of their staff. Did that planned live-action remake get canned?
Still no more info on Discotek's Harlock box set, unfortunately. Isn't it already officially available with subs streaming somewhere?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Is the Kite Bluray going to be the Director's Cut? I guess I could just look that up myself...
But yeah, Discotek doesn't really do a good job of updating their fans. It'll happen, just expect it to come out of no where. They'll probably do a release date pretty soon, I'd imagine.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
There's no director's cut of Kite, it's always been the same in Japan. There's three different US releases of it, with varying amounts of removed scenes. We did eventually get it completely uncut on DVD under the "Special Edition" moniker; "Director's Cut" still had stuff missing.
I would think the BD would also be uncut.

After the botched releases of La Blue Girl, Twin Dolls, and Twin Angels, I don't trust any North American company to distribute this stuff unmolested

It's a bit of a stretch, but Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze have some cyberpunk motifs.Raytrace wrote:can anyone recommmend any similar to Bubblegum Crisis in mood cyberpunky/sci-fi type animes?

Serial Experiments Lain always seemed like Key: The Metal Idol just from looking at the video covers. I have both series, but never got around to seeing them.cj iwakura wrote:It's a bit of a stretch, but Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze have some cyberpunk motifs.Raytrace wrote:can anyone recommmend any similar to Bubblegum Crisis in mood cyberpunky/sci-fi type animes?

it's a bit of an aside - but seriously intro to Bubblegum Crisis 2 is just such a perfect combination of audio and visual.

Lain is a classic. Key isn't bad, but it isn't nearly on the same level.xbl0x180 wrote:Serial Experiments Lain always seemed like Key: The Metal Idol just from looking at the video covers. This is true of EVERY BGC episode.Raytrace wrote:it's a bit of an aside - but seriously intro to Bubblegum Crisis 2 is just such a perfect combination of audio and visual.

Mad Machine's OP is probably my favorite, though.
Either that or There's a Hurricane Tonight.
We're all in agreement that the remake(2040) is garbage, I hope?

Serial Experiments Lain is probably the most boring anime I've ever watched. The fact that it's butt ugly also hurts it quite a bit. What do people see in it, honestly. I just saw a bunch of people standing around like morons, speaking occasionally to move forward the barely existing plot and to remind the viewer they aren't just watching a slideshow. >_>

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Like much of my favorite anime, (i.e. Mind Game, Angel's Egg, Kaiba, End of Evangelion) Lain's a "trip." It's much more about atmosphere, aesthetics and speculation on the future of technology than any coherent plot. You're meant to really soak in the world. Some people have the patience for that sort of thing, some don't.Serial Experiments Lain is probably the most boring anime I've ever watched. What do people see in it, honestly.
It is not. The animation is far superior to any other ABe series, and it does a wonderful job of depicting an eerily off-kilter version of Tokyo. The fact that it's butt ugly also hurts it quite a bit.

It also looks stellar in HD.

I have not watched it yet, is it 'Diebuster' level of shitness or, 'I can enjoy it just cause I like the universe it's in' level (which I could handle) ?cj iwakura wrote:

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'd say it's on that level of crap: horrible chara designs, forgettable music, and tons of CG. It pretty much looks like most modern animu, except there aren't any little girls doing cute things, so it has that going for itRaytrace wrote:I have not watched it yet, is it 'Diebuster' level of shitness or, 'I can enjoy it just cause I like the universe it's in' level (which I could handle) ?cj iwakura wrote:

Yeah, 2040 is just BGC gone modern. It isn't total garbage, but it ruins everything good about the original(Nene - short blonde hair; Sylia - emo).

I don't get why you bash modern animu so much when you watch stuff like Clannad and Rosario+Vampire.xbl0x180 wrote:It pretty much looks like most modern animu, except there aren't any little girls doing cute things, so it has that going for it
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
'Cause those box sets were on being sold on the cheep. Also, I will watch pretty much anything; however, I don't think it'd be a good idea to recommend everything to others. Watching some of this junk sometimes serves to reaffirm my view that new shows aren't quite up to scratch with what was being made in the 70s and 80s.
If I had my druthers, I'd be buying translations of 80s mecha and sci-fi shows, or some raer slice-o'-life series a la Maison Ikkoku. With the current state of North American fandom, I wouldn't bet on it. Soooo... I'd probably wait until I can buy something crappy, like K-On!, for 15 bucks hahahah

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The chara designs look like something outta Battle Athletes or Metal Fighter Miku, only smoother in movement due to the CGI. If you can stand watching those shows, then it shouldn't be too bloody awful (it's definitely better than the Burn Up series). The cyber suit designs looked intact; those were the highlight in terms of look. They shoulda used that budget to create a few, solid OAVs using the old designs and putting some more money into the musiccj iwakura wrote:Yeah, 2040 is just BGC gone modern. watch it... then watch it again. All the time try to remember everything and treat every ocurrence like the parts of a puzzle. You have to have a great attention to detail in order to get everything that happens. It's very cryptic so it's normal that you don't get it the first time you watch it.ChainsawGuitarSP wrote:Serial Experiments Lain is probably the most boring anime I've ever watched. hmm from my lazy wiki perusal of the show, I might give it a go, though I find the Apple computer references offensive :pO. Van Bruce wrote:

I just finished off the first disc from the second season of Rosario + Vampire and I can definitely NOT recommend this thing to anyone here. Jeez, almost everything I dislike about modern animu is in this: little girl doing cute things, rediculous amounts of fan service, dumb storylines, CG out the waz00, too many high-pitched voices and weird speech intonations, unfunny jokes; this is an embarrassing mess, courtesy of Gonzo. It's dizzying, it's nauseating.
