Oh yeah, on like my 4th beer. Made a british mild tonight, meaning I can drink a dozen glasses and not get drunk. (What's the fun in that?)

Edit: Image
I'll take you up on that possibly this weekend! Damn shame, last few times I've been toasted I always pass out before I make it to the forum. What a fool.

It's for people whose palates can't handle regular liquor or beer and want to get fucked up. I've tried a few of the high alcohol malt beverages (Blast, Mike's Harder... and now Four Loko) and the only things they have in common are their disgusting sweetness and the terrible stomach ache they give me. Four Loko was the worst of the bunch, like a blue raspberry slurpee/cheap vodka/robitussin cocktail. I pounded two small glasses and wasn't going to suffer through any more of it. My old lady barely got through one so she ended up dumping it.

Yeah, I know some broheims that always go "8 loko", with one bloke putting a 5-hour energy into it. He's always pretty gone after that. Loko for that loko.

srs training = no alcohol.

Which isn't a bad thing. As I'm having righteous stomach issues and beer shits are no fun.

No brews for me either. I'm still going strong even though I just completed a huge flooring project and sweat my ass off today. There's a six pack in the fridge but I don't feel any real temptation. 16 more days.

Im convinced that deschutes brewery only makes mediocre beers. Just got done with a tour and some samples. Tried the ipa, green lakes ale and the summer ale.

Mirror Pond is widely praised as a 'perfect pale ale'...I think it is terribly boring. I may have had their Black Butte as well, but don't remember.

I remember the porter being really flat with a strong chocolate flavor.

Found a little brew pub in a town on the way up to the Sierras (Sequoia national forest.) Not fantastic, but will become a routine stop.

It's pretty goddamn awful. Especially since it was a pretty diffuse, ill-defined scene. You can argue that krautrock isn't really a scene or a genre, but it's a fucking laser point compared to post rock.

According to Wikipedia it was some guy name Simon Reynolds, who also has a Wikipedia page that I don't feel like reading since I don't think every act should have a sub genre named after it and my attention span isn't so good atm. I say 'butt-rock' for anything I don't like.

The term 'post punk' is surprisingly useful. The only 'post' term in music I know that really works. Was at a small pub where they were having a Stone event, and I realized we could talk about craft beer as being 'post Stone' since Stone feels pretty irrelevant now. Still dig some of their beers, but there is nothing by them (short of maybe Double Bastard) which isn't done better by someone else.

Are we ready for a 'post IPA' scene?

Stone's problem is they can't tinker or go outside the box much. Remember when they talked about doing "odd" releases of IRS/Old Guardian/etc and their fans were up in arms? The last new beer from them I tried was Levitation, which I liked but thought was overpriced. Their special releases are still good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them.

Hopefully we're moving away from the "extreme" beer focus to stuff that's more drinkable and experimental.

Aww whats with the Stone hate?

Maybe I haven't tried the "good stuff", but I think Arrogant Bastard Ale is damn tasty. A perfect mixture of drinkability and high alcohol percentage. (for me)

Their Oaked Arrogant Bastard is neat, their Levitation Ale is damn good... even their Epic that you must age for a year is freakin tasty. The Smoked Porter has a great flavor to it too.

Not a huge fan of the basic Stone IPA, but I think they have some delicious drinks.

Stone hate> This is coming from someone who cut their teeth on stone and wants them to continue to innovate. As acid king says above, their problem, like almost any successful brewery is that they can't really change without pissing off their core fans. The problem is that craft brewing is pushing a lot of ideas forward. As one stone rep told me, Ruination did a lot to popularize the idea of an imperial ipa, but it in of itself is not an iipa. Stone has to deal with a new market where they feel a bit closer to Sam Adams than the current craft beer scene. Part of my problem with stone actually is that they tend to use really cheap grain bills and they ferment their beers FAST so that they often have a hot finish. Stone has no problem calling us pussies, but the truth is that chinook isn't a good aroma/flavoring hop. This shit blew my mind 10 years ago, but now it feels inexcusable.

I still drink Stone, and will be heading to their pad for sour fest in another month, so don't take this as hatred. I just wish they weren't so locked into their same old beers.

I can understand that. I've only recently discovered them myself, so I don't know how long some of these brews have been going.

Its a tough spot being innovative, but then having a fanbase that only wants that first innovation, and not new stuff.

Apparently its not exclusive to music!

What would you recommend if I want to taste some good hops?

OK, so I'm coming at this as a brewer, but you're in CA so you should have a lot of options at your disposal. Given your location, you should definitely be trying all the beers from Russian River (Pliny is an amazing dbl ipa), Bear Republic (I like the hop rod rye quite a bit) and Lagunitas (mostly enjoy their seasonals like Brown Sugga more than their standards, though maximus is good.) The beers from San Diego (Alesmith, Iron Fist, Port Brewing/Lost Abbey) are all worth checking out.

Don't know if that's the sort of recommendation you were looking.
