I enjoyed it.

Hellraiser II - Surprisingly good. I liked how they extend the mythology of the box, show how Pinhead was created, and the gore and monster effects, despite the rubber monster-ness of some of them.

3rd wasn't too bad. From there it does go to shit quick. Kind of like the Return of the Living Dead franchise; they sold the rights and the whole thing went to hell!circuitface wrote:Yeah Hellraiser I & II are where it's at. I liked Return Of The Living Dead 3 and 4. One of those had all that 90s Grunge stylings, which I thought was cool

That would be 3. 4 was where they sold the rights to some Russian/Romanian production company and it went to hell (and straight to video), although 5 was way worse. Plus, with 4 and 5 they completely changed the zombies from the original 3 films, went from super strong and hard to kill to total push overs, going down with body shots and shit.xbl0x180 wrote:I liked Return Of The Living Dead 3 and 4. Still worth watching for zombies, but ya...kind of lost the style of the originals with 4 and 5.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I refuse to count 4 & 5. Zombie movie canon is always a crazy thing anyway. Just look at the Zombi series and all the countless 'sequels' to the Living Dead films like Day of the Dead 2 (very retarded). Here's hoping that someday they'll reacquire the rights and release a true part 4, effectively banishing Necropolis & Rave 2 Tha Grave or whatever it's called.jonny5 wrote:That would be 3. 4 was where they sold the rights to some Russian/Romanian production company and it went to hell (and straight to video), although 5 was way worse. I'm afraid the whole zombie thing has lost it's flavor on me due to oversaturation. I could care less about watching The Walking Dead or going to see World War Z when it's completed.
I don't understand why so many people wanted the regular zombies to return in Resident Evil 6 because they're so tired and boring these days. The series has always been about the real BOW's for me. I think of House of the Dead in the same way, zombies are just there for cannon fodder. The real meat is in the monsters.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Dude, if you are a fan of zombies, and I'm talking the more character driven stuff rather than the crappy B-movie stuff, you owe it to yourself to check out The Walking Dead. It is amazing! It keeps getting better, and they are already straying quite a bit from the comic time line while still maintaining the character driven aspects of the comic, so even for those familiar with the comic, it keeps you guessing. First current TV show I have followed in at least 10 years. It really is quite well done, and as with the comic, its not really about the zombies, but the people living through it and the interactions of the group. Sure there is gore and zombie mayhem, but it's the characters that drive the story line.circuitface wrote:I refuse to count 4 & 5. Zombie movie canon is always a crazy thing anyway. Re: Movies you've just watched
I read about 70 issues into the comic and really loved the pacing and "anyone can die" nature of the series, but it's simply that zombies themselves don't interest me anymore. I was really big into the idea for a good 10 years, mostly because the idea of a zombie apocalypse scared the daylights out of me. Now that zombie media is everywhere and I've seen so much of it, they've completely lost their frightfulness. The idea of them just seems ridiculous now, and I don't find them nearly as interesting as other horror icons.jonny5 wrote:Dude, if you are a fan of zombies, and I'm talking the more character driven stuff rather than the crappy B-movie stuff, you owe it to yourself to check out The Walking Dead. However, the 'smart' zombies from Return of the Living Dead or Las Plaga from RE4 & 5 still seem like worthy contenders. Injecting a little intelligence & capability means their behavior isn't so predictable and non-threatening.

Zombies are awersome! Even the crappiest zombie movie rocks my face off. Hell, Zombie Holocaust had NO zombies to speak of, but I still think it's a worthwhile watch because hilarity will always ensue at how cheep-lookin' this stuff is - on a Troma level, man. Return of the Living Dead 4 still had some decent SFX and it looks as if they had fun making it. I know 5 was made for teevee, but I never got around to seeing that one. I think Zombie 5: The Killing Birds is probably the weakest zombie movie I have ever seen because it also lacks zombies, but it has Lara Wendel so I had to see it a few times

Really beautiful movie in every respect, sincerely recommended to anyone who likes good film. Goes to show how productive it can be to allow an author to direct an adaptation of his own book.

Straw Dogs remake - Never saw the first so I don't know how it compares, but I thought it was not so good. The big flaw was the unnecessary side plot with the slow guy and the girl. They could have shaved 20 minutes off the run time and had a more focused movie. James Marsden's character's development wasn't handled very well either, which was ostensibly the focus of the movie.
I remember enjoying III a bit, but it's been a long time since I've seen it. It's on Netflix so I'll get to it at some point.jonny5 wrote:3rd wasn't too bad. From there it does go to shit quick. The Blu-Ray version of the original 40th anniversary edition of Straw Dogs flick is up for sale at Target for a mere $14.99 currently (a modest price right there). The two pivotal scenes with actress Susan George are quite something else.

YiYi
This was a Taiwanese film hzt was talking up between swigs of bourbon. And he wasn't wrong, it's a little masterpiece for sure.
It's long and it's slow, but its unassuming examination of the fabric of life is riveting.
It's a reflective film with something everyone can relate to on a personal level, and its composition is masterful. It feels centrifugal, spinning around the unfolding lives and events of its protagonists only to end up back where it started, in a sense. It was quite a feat of filmmaking and incredibly fulfilling.
Definitely gets a place on my list of Asia's best (now becoming a fairly lengthy list!)

Just saw John Carter last night. It is my new Star Wars.
I also watched some really bad movies. "Texas Killing Fields" is a jumbled incoherent mess. "Another Earth" has a really interesting background idea...and then made it into a poor decision making human interest movie. "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" had potential too, but for a horror/comedy, I just didn't find it funny at all...was just waiting for it to get over.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Strange you should bring this up. I watched John Carter too and I felt very strongly that it resembled TPM ep1 quite a bit. The Tsarks looked very similar to the robots. If you took away the horns and made them metal it would pretty much be spot on.maxlords wrote:Just saw John Carter last night. It is my new Star Wars.

I thought John Carter was a wonderful film. Very funny, action packed.. In fact I would say only the storyline was slightly lacking. Its still a good 9/10 in my view though. I'd like to see a sequel. Its nice to see another blockbuster without any stars in it too.
Btw, crinkly packets and school kids should not be allowed in cinemas. I had the unfortunate experience of listening to kids shouting at the movie from beginning to end. I will await the bluray with anticipation so that I can watch it properly.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Hmmm....TPM huh? Ouch! I meant more that it resembled the OT strongly. But then TPM was patterned off of the OT anyway. To be fair, there is a bit of a resemblance between the Tsarks and the robots from Ep. 1, but on the other hand, "A Princess of Mars" was written in 1912, so if anything, Lucas lifted from Burroughs! Story was a bit on the light side, but it was one that was literally perfect for cinema IMO. And I ENJOYED it. Isn't that the point of cinema? I hated TPM (and the whole new trilogy) but I sure as hell loved this
Luckily my showing was almost dead silent except for people laughing here and there....everyone was into it. People actually applauded at the end too. Pretty great. Sorry you got stuck with a bunch of kids...that would ruin it somewhat!

I picked up and read some of John Carter of Mars and found out about this movie just a few days later, which was weird.
I'm up for it though, because of Andrew Stanton, I like that guy. I trust him a little bit too, more so than Brad Bird who didn't do such a splendid job with MI: Ghost Protocol as I would have liked.
I really hope I do like it though. It's been a long time since I pledged never to raise my expectations for a big Hollywood movie, not since my soul was eternally destroyed by Transformers in-fact.

Well perhaps battleship will renew your confidence.
Maxlords - I see your point about the storyline resembling the SW OT. I was talking more about the effects and designs of ships etc. Which definitely lean more towards the new trilogy than the OT.
