On Saturn they're compressed-looking. I went with PS1 for this reason. Salamander 2 looks the same on both discs.

Hmmmm… I have the Saturn version of these. Can't remember if it applies to both discs but the Gradius pack has 2 or 3 screen settings - one being "arcade" - not sure if that is significant.

EDIT: Just checked the Saturn discs. Gradius has Arcade, Arcade zoom and full screen. Gradius 2 has arcade and full screen modes. Gradius 2 has optional slowdown as well.

Salamander and Lifeforce have arcade and arcade zoom options. No screen option with Salamander 2.

Fever SOS fixes the TLB invincibility bug. Therefore, all other things being equal (but don't quote me on that), SOS is the harder of the two.

Sure they do. NTSC is NTSC.
My family has told me that Japanese PS2s will not work on American TVs! I'm not taking the risk!

Your family is misinformed and wrong then. Japan uses the same video standards as the US, and power supply standards that are close enough that they are compatible without conversion.

Can some one please tell me what "1-All" and "2-All" mean? I have tried looking it up and I get mostly answers about sports scores...

@1993: I'll re-confirm that; I've had a JPS2 for years, and it plugs right into my TV and outlet here in the USA and works without any issues (same goes with my J360). I do know that it can be persnickety when it comes to playing DVD movies without some program or other on the memory card, but for playing JP games it's pretty darn hassle-free, for both PS1 and PS2.

One other thing I will mention is that its power cable isn't quite the same as the one for my US PS2 (the part that goes into the wall is identical, but the end that plugs into the system isn't the same shape), though I'm not sure if that's a regional thing or some wider-ranging difference in model numbers - either way, if you buy a JPS2 I'd recommend making sure it has a working power cable included, as it might be a bit trickier to replace than a US cable (the video cable plug, on the other hand, seems to fit fine either way).

@Iceman - Those are terms used to describe how far you've gotten in games that may "loop" (start over, often at a higher difficulty) when you reach the end of the last stage. So if you finish all of a game's stages once without continuing (1CC) but don't meet the requirements to try the second loop you'd record your accomplishment as a "1-ALL"; if you can also finish the "loop" in one go without continuing it's a "2-ALL".

I see... So the plug will still be able to go into the red, white, and yellow outlets, then?

Yeah, the video cables are the same; even a generic Gamestop one will work with a JP system.

There's a Japanese animation - a TV series, I think – that while nothing official, is occasionally compared to the aesthetic and setting of Progear. What's it called?

Is there an easy way to fight Shin Seseri or Zatsuza in their respective 360 ports? I haven't played either in years but if I remember correctly, they're not selectable in training.

Seseri should be selectable in training. Make sure to set overmode level to max and the rank to no miss since you need both of those normally. Even if I'm remembering wrong and that doesn't work, you can play through the stage to get it.

Zatsuza cannot be practiced.

How do you set up Raiden in MAME so that checkpoints are turned off?

Speaking of which, is that summer patch thingy available for download anywhere?

After beating everything on akashic, I feel like I need to fully "unlock" what the game has to offer.

Thanks, I'll see if I can trigger Shin Seseri this weekend. Shame about Zatsuza, it'd be fun to just try as all of the TLB's are. I've triggered Zatsuza in novice but want to see the real thing.

It's not really any different from BL hibachi, just hyper cancel and after hyper cancel as there is no real way(or reason) to dodge anything he does

True, it's basically just a denser mass of undodgeable shit but.....there's big lasers on the last pattern! :D Or something. I forget if BL is out there on Mame or not but if so, I could try and save state my way there I guess.

BL it's not on MAME.

Nope, AFAIK the Special Summer Patch 2013 is exclusive to the physical edition of the Akashic Box. The digital version doesn't have any patch.

I don't know if Sega's Space Harrier counts as a shmup, but... Has anyone played the PS2 version of it? And if so, has anyone ever accessed the secret stage? I heard there's a secret stage where you could fight the final boss of the Sega Master System of Space Harrier, called Haya Oh, by killing the boss Valda before he approaches a fourth time, on both stages where you fight him (including the final boss rush stage) and then keep shooting into the horizon after you defeat him a second time, and I tried doing that, except the game takes me right to the ending rather than the secret stage. Has anyone tried this before?

I recently got info that this SMS final boss was reintegrated in the 3D Space Harrier port for the 3DS, not the Playstation 2 version.
