Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Gas, self-propelled. It's not like I have a huge yard, I've just always despised the thought of doing so. Once I start going it's not too bad. Just the concept.

I'd rather mow the lawn than clean the god damn bathroom every two freakin' weeks. Once it's clean, though, I do get a sense of satisfaction from seeing how clean it is. One thing I don't do is dust... because this fucking dust gets on EVERYTHING here... all the time. If I were to dust around, more dust would get on it a few hours later. It's an asthmatic's worst nightmare

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
See that I don't mind so much. Until recently I only had a straight push mower and even with a small lawn it takes so much energy to do. Especially when the grass is tall.drauch wrote:Gas, self-propelled. It's not like I have a huge yard, I've just always despised the thought of doing so. Once I start going it's not too bad. The fact that my computer's HDD will start either reading or writing for minutes without me knowing what for. No updates are being downloaded, no background processes are being updated, no web-browsing, no system restore, there are no viruses... anything that you can think of that will cause the HDD to read or write has been confirmed to NOT be the cause...
and yet the freaking thing keeps on grinding... doing something while it should be idle , and I can't find what it is...
Also, Eschatos' "Point of No Return" playing repeatedly in my head. Damn you, Yousuke Yasui and your catchy retro style reminiscent of the Genesis and X68000.

Finally got my font loading code done and text rendering logic on paper, my com decides to stop booting (freezes after post), few restarts later no video output anymore, so I took out everything cleaned up the dust, put everything back (reseating all the parts), now it shuts down at POST... I'll mow the lawn if it means I don't have to hear my neighbours go at it on weekend nights... or my neighbours hearing us. I still have to put the radio on blast to do anything around this crappy townhouse

What about how much memory is in the thing? It could be thrashing [swapping in and out memory to disk and back because there isn't enough RAM, but more than enough HDD].

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Today's visit to Tom's Hardware:
"Sponsored by" campaign ads against Obama masquerading as financial articles. "The next year will be much worse!"
Couch potatoes and office drones nerd rage against predictions on the future of SSD development! "How could a mere grad student know better than me? I'm a fucking expert on this, Moore's Law has never let me down."
Of course, heading over there this evening (from a different PC) I can't find the exact links (although ironically I did find that the ssd article was old news, so I'm not sure why it showed up in the queue; maybe it was because the organizational PC I used it on had last updated the browser in March?)
But what is up with that Xbox 720 news \O_o/ (also from January, however)
Yes, I want to pay Microsoft to do all my work and multitask on a games box which can fail at any time and includes components irrelevant to and detrimental to its reliability - like, for example, probably requiring a Gold account - at the same time we get inadequate acoustics and ventillation.
But you gotta give 'em credit; at the time Steam and pretty much everybody else is pushing towards serious gaming at either low entry points, or FTP bolstered by microtransactions, Microsoft is charging in the other direction, because what we really wanted was just to throw up our hands and say "all this PC stuff is too hard for me, give me more squares and menus that I can scroll through with shoulder buttons please." I'm all for paying a bit more to get a better console, which is why I own a PC. Hopefully this idea is getting buried with Metro. I can't fuckin' wait until October 26!!

If your using vista I know what it is. Its that silly inventory thing it does for searching, is it called indexing?Specineff wrote:The fact that my computer's HDD will start either reading or writing for minutes without me knowing what for. Do alt-control-delete. Go to performance tab, then click resource monitor. Click on the disk activity. The more threads the more activity. There will likely be lots of svchosts running. If you sort by "read" see if they change places alot and look for any indexing threads. Try cancelling one of them if its running to see if the HDD slows down.

When your driving and the sun goes right into that spot between your rear view and the blinder and hits your right between the eyes.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
That is exactly why I'm glad my windscreen has a blackout spot that covers that area. The bigger piss off for me is when you're driving and the sun hits the side of your car. Low enough you can't use the visor, but just in the right spot to always catch the corner of your eye.neorichieb1971 wrote:When your driving and the sun goes right into that spot between your rear view and the blinder and hits your right between the eyes.

When an old game crashes my computer, such as L4D2. The newer games, despite massive overloading on my computer's resources, never gave me problems. Like WTF?

Nothing enrages me more than bipolar weather. One week it's hot as sin, next it's nice. Then my room is 95F and I'm waking up covered in sweat. I go out to the living room where it manages to be 5~10 degrees cooler because the sun isn't facing it.

I was just playing the original L4D. If anything the lack of people to do Survival mode with is annoying. I hate most of the L4D2 cast and places, but the original is nice and simple.powersoul wrote:When an old game crashes my computer, such as L4D2. Survival mode is awesome. Recently I'm just messing around with community mods just to keep it fresh. The game goes stale pretty fast, and not many people I know plays L4D/2 anymore.Ed Oscuro wrote:I was just playing the original L4D. Dell's laptop power cords. They encode a signal in them through the mesh around the cables, which identify the type of cord. Unfortunately, it is the most likely thing to short out ever, and if the computer doesn't detect said signal, it won't charge, even if everything else is A-OK.
Compare my Acer netbook, which will happily take any random powersupply you plug into it.
Oh, and PSP 1000 d-pads. No way of inputting diagonals with any consistency. Taped a nickel to the damn thing so that I could get more leverage for diagonals.

I know that feeling. I've tried doing the same thing, but it really didn't do much for mine. GGXX was still a total pain-in-the-ass to play unless I was using the thumbstick.null1024 wrote:

It did make things a little easier for NES emulation, though, so it's something.

Yeah. Sega should have made a mint just licensing the MD/Saturn D-pad to everyone under the sun. To quote Jerry Seinfeld: "They did it. It's done. We have it now."moh wrote:i hate the standard ps2/ps3 d-pads...Op Intensify wrote:In contrast, the PSP-3000 has the best D-pad Sony has ever made.

Also, in keeping with the thread theme: Dreamcast not having the MD/Saturn-style D-pad. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? I can only assume some executive said something like: Oh, look, N64 is kicking our ass! Maybe it's because of the superior D-pad!

When mundane things from everyday life are given extraordinary titles. Example: I just picked up a new 4-port wireless router. The thing is covered in shit that looks like carbon fiber, and it's called "The Dark Knight"..

Maintaining my wii mod.
Yesterday I bought a copy of Kirby's Dream Collection. Note I said bought, not downloaded. I wanted a nice legitimate version for my shelf. Put it in my wii and and ripped it to an HDD so I could protect the disc. Went in to play and discovered if you choose any of the main games it will crash to the home screen. Apparently this is part of Nintendo's piracy prevention. Queue an hour of research and upgrading just so I can play the game. No fault of Nintendo's of course, but tedium does tend to annoy me.
