Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Oh god...Fire & Ice is the greatest thing ever. I still remember the day it got released by Blue-Underground and how giddy I was to go pick it up. Memories.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Watched Joint Security Area last night. I'm a big fan of the two lead actors and some of the director's other films (namely the vengeance trilogy and Thirst), but I kept avoiding it because I don't care for military themes. One of my friends convinced to watch it though, and it was awesome. I don't want to detail the plot because it would get into spoilers, but it's a really great mystery/thriller and I'd highly recommend it to just about anyone.

It is an excellent film indeed, good one!iconoclast wrote:Watched Joint Security Area last night. I've got a bit of a woody on for Jack Arnold-directed films at the moment, so for the first time I've recenty watched:
The Incredible Shrinking Man (so much better than I was hoping for; a really sharp bit of cinema)
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Tarantula
Next up, I'm watching It Came From Outer Space (written by Ray Bradbury!).
Recently I've also just watched other high quality sci-fi 'B-movies' including When Worlds Collide, and for the umpteenth time the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Re: Movies you've just watched
The Incredible Shrinking Man was also quite ahead of its time when it came to SFX, I read somewhere; when it was first released, people were really impressed. The story itself is a timeless piece of existentialism. Some of the monologues he had stuck with me years after seeing it. I ended up getting a small video compilation for 30 bucks just for this movie

just seen moneyball and enjoyed it.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I finally got around to watching the Coen Brothers' adaptation of True Grit. The dialogue evokes America's past, but isn't too overwrought or precious. It reminded me of why I like P.G. Wodehouse so much. Really, really good western.

Re: Movies you've just watched
It's good (if the "SF cinema" has any weight behind it, it's right there), but I found the film tricks overrated. I mean the "dollhouse" scene with the cat, when the protagonist doesn't cast any shadow which makes him look like he's floating above the ground. Come on, I don't believe it couldn't have been ironed out back in the day. If there's any excuse for dicking around with old films and computers, it's fixing this kind of stuff.spadgy wrote:The Incredible Shrinking Man (so much better than I was hoping for; a really sharp bit of cinema)

Man I love these old 50's Sci-Fi, even the bad ones are special. Nothing is better on a bad day to shut of the light and watch these kind of movies.spadgy wrote:I've got a bit of a woody on for Jack Arnold-directed films at the moment, so for the first time I've recenty watched:

I guess you already know it, but if you haven't seen THEM you have to, Giant Ants is win. And check out Ed Woods classics cheesy sci-fi in it's best.

Just got back from a showing of Nausicaa in hollywood (Egyptian theater is putting on a Ghibli fest). I have the film on blu ray, so wasn't sure I really needed to attend, but damn, you forget what a theater does for a film; and why traditionally Miyazaki felt his movies should only be viewed in theaters. Mononoke is airing this Friday, I'll have to go.

yeah, outside of Tenshi no Tamago, Nausicaa is my "other" favorite animated movie. I showed it often at a post-apocalyptic film fest I used to run in an SF warehouse many years back. I got to see it in the Berkeley PFA on a proper print a few years ago, too...

Re: Movies you've just watched
I remember watching a movie once where a man kept shrinking and shrinking and at the end it had some writing stating he just kept getting smaller and smaller and it ended. Is this is the "incredible shrinking man"?
I only caught the last 15 minutes but wanted to watch the whole thing.

LOL
I love the nausicaa movie, but it is so hard to not keep thinking of the far more complex manga--not just because of it's about 4 times as much story, but of course because Nausicaa is naked for two frames in volume 4

Re: Movies you've just watched
Yeah, I try to view the movie as a completely separate, almost unrelated story compared to the manga. It's got a lot of great things going for it, and Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack is phenomenal per usual, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the much longer and deeper manga. And yeah, Nausicaa is a cutey, but I have too much respect for her to watch h-doujins

I never compare written/printed works with movies. I mean, they're not the same thing.

Enjoyed the commentary on Criterion's blu-ray of Godzilla (54); the American version (King of the Monsters) has additional commentary, so I may watch that tomorrow. It's a LOT of Godzilla, but G54 is among one of my favorite Japanese films, so why not?

I paid $50 for the out-of-print US blu-ray of Honneamise, which will now never go back into print, now that Bandai Visual USA has shuttered its doors.
Probably the best anime movie ever, standing head and shoulders above even most Miyazaki flicks in storytelling and artistry. Every aspect of it is so perfect that I can excuse the inexplicable rape scene that has nothing to do with the story. Gainax and Hideaki Anno really were on the top of their game from the absolute beginning.

I think the director of Honneamise was Yamaga Hiroyuki. Drive.
Although artistically pleasing some people might think its slow and boring. I gave it 7.5/10, my wife a 5/10.

I know that Hideaki Anno didn't direct Honneamise, but he still had a major role in its creation.

Meet the Feebles is definitely worth 50 bucks still. Let me rephrase: that's a lotta dollas for one movie that I really like, rather than love.Acid King wrote:I paid $50 for a VHS copy of Meet the Feebles back in the 90's and it was worth every penny.drauch wrote:^Yeah, I've been thinking of upgrading myself. It wasn't the pace I had a problem with, retrospectively, but the weakness of the plot. The theme was hackneyed when it should have been something remarkable and daring because the main character was so awesome. They should do a pseudo sequel with the same character and with more actual driving.
