Memories sounds similar. There's also Aoi Bungaku, which is a 12 episode series featuring adaptations of six short stories from Japanese literature. Might not be the same thing, but it's a great show nonetheless.blackoak wrote:Any recommendations for similar things?

Any recommendations for similar things? I will have likely seen many of them by now, but I'm sure there's some I haven't. I've been using the article at pelleas.net on "karisuma animators" as a exploratory guide of sorts, which has been really illuminating: http://www.pelleas.net/animators/ . Shmups would really benefit from something of that caliber for game design/company histories.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Where I only got into the 2nd season of Kaiji to watch last season (any other recommendations from last season/year?) I'm happy to report that Mysterious Girlfriend (heartwarming first love mixed with magical realism ala Borge) and Nyarko-san:Another Crawling Chaos (omg Cthulhu Mythos and anime!). Say what you will about the moe phenomonon, I think it's finally reached a saturation point and now a "2nd Wave" is coming which really remixes the genre. As an older otaku, it is much more palatable than what had come before. Thank goodness.

Watching Area 88 OVA - I've a feeling I'm gonna love this for at least 2 reasons: a) I love the shmup and b) I love military aircraft anyway, 15 minutes in it's looking good so far

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Shintani Kaoru's designs looked a lot like shoujo manga, but the theme couldn't get any more manlier: mercenaries/soldiers of fortune trying to buy their way outta sure death from their conscription into a foreign legion or men who have nothing to lose who sold their souls to a far off war in the unforgiving sands.Raytrace wrote:Watching Area 88 OVA - I've a feeling I'm gonna love this for at least 2 reasons: a) I love the shmup and b) I love military aircraft anyway, 15 minutes in it's looking good so far

The theme songs for these 3 OAVs were solid Romantic Pop with a Rock flare

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
is there any other decent military aircraft theme anime?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yukikaze? Nowhere near as good as Area 88 because of all that s*** CG, but still a decent watch (and it's only 3 OAVs as well!).Raytrace wrote:is there any other decent military aircraft theme anime?

There is also The Cockpit, which has two aircraft segments (the third is a motorbike anime). The first one done by Kawajiri Yoshiaki is most excellent

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
cool thanks I'll check these out - for some reason watching Area 88 reminded me of playing Strike Commander.xbl0x180 wrote:Yukikaze? Finally finishing Armored Trooper Votoms today. It's going to be sad to see it end, though. Has anyone seen any of the OVAs? Also been watching Devil Hunter Yohko. It made me all giddy to see the PC-Engine Duo-R, the Atari Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket, Super Famicom, and a Mega Drive sitting in her room.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
That Yohko scene sure accurately depicts the gaming scene from the early 1990s. Interesting to see a white colored Atari Lynx I handheld variant though shown in that scene from 1989-1990. (Atari Corp. only sold a black colored version for the U.S. market and eventually replaced it with the all black colored Lynx II smaller handheld in 1992).
Yeah, watching "Battle Fairy Yukikaze" and it's "not too serious" OVA sidestory of "Fighting Fairy Girl: Rescue Me Mave-Chan" is cool. The first two OVAs of BFY were released in a timely manner for the U.S. but the third one seemed to be released about a year or so later. It was well worth the wait for it indeed. The FFG OVA could've been developed into a more serious one-off with some T&A shots for fanservice but really doesn't go into that territory.

For Raytrace,
Be sure to check out both CG versions of Appleseed and it's sequel of Appleseed: Ex Machina...both have some cool action/stylized gunfight scenes worth viewing. Even John Woo added his stylized gun fight choregraphy/flavor to one of the CG Appleseed flicks as well.
The 5th Blu-Ray release of Unicorn Gundam OVA series will be out on June 8th, 2012...same day as that of the much hyped Prometheus prequel debuts on the big screen.

Picked up the boxset of Teknoman purely based on the fact that it was 1000+min and only $20.
No original voices, but for something old and cheesy I don't mind.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Honestly, those CG Appleseed were absolutely horrible. They symbolise pretty much the worst aspects of modern anime: weak and cheap0 CG out the wazoo, weak story, blah music. I think the only thing they had going for them were the designs themselves, which would be better in a video game than a movie or OAV. I thought the original Appleseed OAV was bad, but that was because it wanted to compress a lot of the story aspects from the manga rather than focus on one or two things. The mecha for it was pretty good and the shooting scene choreography was one of the best I had seen up to that point (save for a few teevee intros). The music was definitely better in the first OAV (i.e., the sax solo and the ending theme for sure). The weakest part of the first OAV were the chara designs, but the new ones have too many things wrong with them

while I did proper like the old Appleseed I was thinking the newer CG ones do look kinda cr4ppy, but tbh Imma still watch them cos I like the universe. Yeah the vehicle/mecha design was certainly a lot better in the OVA than the character design.xbl0x180 wrote:Honestly, those CG Appleseed were absolutely horrible. Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Gundam 00 is a good series. It is not canon, and uses several serious themes in a well-paced and intelligent way. I wonder why Sunrise was producing that silly Code Geass thingy at the same time.
