I'd never tried touhou on normal. Always lunatic, hmm I think I might play normal and get a few kuso clears for the lulz

Definitely. You need to play Lunatic to get a challenge out of those games from simply trying to survive. Without that challenge, of course you'd find them mediocre. Try to 1cc a few of them on Lunatic, really doing that is no more daunting than most arcade 1-alls, and see what you think. Its hard to properly appreciate any game from just a few plays of it.

My problem with this line of argument is that there are plenty of games I found immediately gratifying, even on a lower difficulty setting. Thinking more about it, my issue with Touhou is that the art/music don't do it for me, that the game doesn't give you a nice visceral response, the background are so uninspiring, and then you've got the same four or five enemies over and over it seems.

Well, if aesthetics are your issue, than there's not much I can say. Personally I think the music and visuals are boring too, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the excellent pattern design.

you have to try to score otherwise you're playing the game wrong and missing the point

it's not that the game isn't giving you a nice visceral response, it's that the way you're built denies the response the game gives you.

there are tons of people who freak out about how amazing a game is, and there are tons of people who freak out about how terrible that same game is; most of the time, both groups will use the same reasons to justify it. the answer is that the way they have been built through life affects everything else that would try to build them; this does cause problems, but noone is ever going to stop to notice. similarly, how a game is supposed to be played is based on the creator's opinion, and anything else is an acceptance or rejection of that opinion; most people don't really "get" this either.

there are some clear facts behind how touhou (an example) is supposed to be played. no continues; most games aren't really built for them, and touhou is no exception. you obviously want to try scoring, because that's most of the game's design right there. either all characters, or just your favorite character; all those characters and shot types are put in for both reasons. either all difficulties, or just the difficulty that you "fit" with*; same as the previous.

(*easy = new to shmups, normal = familiar with touhou, hard = familiar with arcade shmups, lunatic = everyone beyond, extra = a taste of hard/lunatic for normal/hard players)

Well, "no continues' is kind of obvious, just like with any other shmup.

very old pc.... windows xp, pentium 4 3ghz, 1022 mb ram, ati radeon x300 series gpu.

-edit- this is gonna sound stupid but... i'm assuming the file called "latest" in the cho ren sha folder is the game itself?

In Eschatos, what is the point of the occasional bitmap sprite of that black and white witch? I haven't yet managed to catch her. Then, what do the symbols in the lower right corner stand for --- is it rank? Lastly, is there an easy way to control rank? Time Attack is killing me in the second half of the game.

Thanks!

Otomedius Excellent - Has anyone experienced this game freezing totally :?: Not a XBox Live disconnection, but a total freeze during gameplay, requiring a complete reboot.

Install app locale or change the region settings in your comp. That may fix it.

Cute isn't the word I'd leap to.

On the topic of Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings TWO, does anyone know if it's possible to affect the stage order? Specifically I want the jungle stage to come second so I can reap the 10k points from the towers undisturbed.

I noticed that if I occasionally destroy Roppongi tower man on stage one before he seppukus off the building it sometimes pops up next, but if there's a rule I'd really like to know it.

No you can't influence it, it's random. Best stage order is Mato Grosso>Ney York>Paris, but as long as you get Mato Grosso first you should be able to get a decent score. If you get Paris first kill yourself and start again, New York>Mato Gosso>Paris works to a degree but you'll get a few less 10000's at a greater risk of being killed.

Lol, sorry I didn't realise you were paying for it in an arcade, I'm used to playing it at home on MVS. I can see how getting Paris first would be shit if you're paying for the privilege :(
