the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
COD: WaW is rather disappointing. It seems like nothing but graphics has progressed since number 2. Veteran mode is still based on luck and bum rushing unsuspecting enemies before their AI kicks in. I realize Treyarch wasn't going to vary too heavily from IW's COD4, but damn...it's the same game with slightly screwed controls and more grenades. ...and pointless kamikaze rushes.
Multiplayer is COD4 in WW2.

I want to play WaW for the campaign, co-op and the zombie thing. No real nterest in WW2 multiplayer, I like modern weapons much more.
I'm going to revist COD 2 and 3 for the veteran achievements this summer. Still haven't been able to get 1000 GS in COD4, mile high club is a bitch and I just can't seem to get the next checkpoint in 'no fighting in the war room (penultimate level)

Hey, I played Unreal Tournament on this weekend's Free Weekend - it's pretty good. I want to say "a lot better than I had been expecting," but it's pretty much mainly a graphical boost.
Long ago, when the game first hit, I read a review by RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS (IGN I think) who whined about the storyline being useless. I think it's actually rather cool, and a lot more enjoyable than the standard "LOL FIGHT 4 PRIZES" of previous games. They kept Malcom around too. I'm into the first fight of the third chapter. Already they've recycled a couple arenas, but as you progress you shouldn't have a reason to return to places.
The one thing that I'm not digging, of course, is that the intensity of the conflict never really ratchets up; it's basically fight against different bots in different locations - from a distance they all look like blue dots for me to zap with the sniper rifle, Goliath, or Enforcer. That's playing at 1600x1200.
Speaking of which, the game taxes my system pretty strenuously, with the fans turning up appreciably even in menus (unfortunately even alt-tabbed out the game uses a respectable amount of the CPU's resources, and the main menu is a 3D map), but it's rare for there to be any hitches more severe than some minor screen tearing. I think if I just swapped 8800 GTS models my system would run it very nicely. Maps load quick while stuff looks pretty nice and the framerate seems very playable. There's actually a whole lot of detail on the maps, including lots of very lofty sniper perches and very detailed skybox-style mapping around. This is my replacement for 2K4, no doubt.
Until the 7th it'll be just $10 on Steam. I'ma go get sum o' dat.

I bought the game And had it since launch day
Problem is last time i checked there werent many people online and the fact that new cheats had surfaced was worrying, also epic neglected and secluded the community they shunned us aside when we wanted a few small changes and a patch to fix the problems.
One time I remember playing and this guy was using a speedhack....moving like 5 times faster than a normal player he had already capped when I was just past half way in the hell bender

I bet you 1000 gamerscore on UT3 IS going to be impossible though. Lol kill a godlike bot 20 times without dying
OK
Currently 36.4% of people playing the game via Steam have completed Chapter 1. That is the most-achieved achievement. The next most completed achievement is "Serial Killer" (get Killing Spree in 20 matches), with 7.7% completion. lol

Been playing Call of Duty World at War. Great game, lots of fun. I havent played many FPS at all because I thought I hated the genre for some reason, turns out I really like it. Bought Halo 2 & 3 recently...played a little Halo 2 which was fun but I havent got to 3 yet. Ive put a ton of time into Fallout 3 which isnt a straight up FPS but it sure has the game mechanics. I also bought the Orange Box but I havent even cracked it open yet.
First off: Meant to post a few days ago about the news announcement that Left 4 Dead 2 is already coming. Wha-huh?
Back to UT3 for a moment: Oh man, that was something.
45 hours = 61% of Unreal 3 Achievements, pretty much all except the "go online a few times" and "play the game too much" ones. Did it all in the Campaign and Instant Action so far.
Yeah, I did the 'survive for 20 kills against a Godlike bot" (there's a trick) and "Like the Back of My Hand," where you need to pick up every powerup item (not health, but things like health bonuses, armor, damage multipliers).
I fought all the way against Epic's failure of porting 360 Achievements over to Steam - sometimes I had to play through something three times or so to get whatever. There's more released in this pack than is covered by various guides so you have to figure out some fine points on your own.
I managed to have some fun doing it - $10 for UT3 and (lol) mod potential, versus a single movie you can sleep through. I liked looking through all the maps, and especially figuring out how to break the game to my benefit when getting some of the silly weapons achievements.
I'll have more if I ever get around to playing through the rest of the campaign.
I see what they meant by the storyline not fitting with the maps. It was alright earlier on, at times, but it's getting pretty ridiculous at places.
Man, I really don't know why I needed to do all that.
Edit: Speaking of embarrassing game achievement stats, the Global Day of Defeat: Source list gives a too-good impression of what people are doing in that game. Only 20% have capped the final flag to win a round (i.e. played the game more than one day), but 16.4% managed to play on 5 non-official maps. 11% (the #4 most-achieved Achievement) is Don't Bring a Gun, because everybody likes stabbing each other instead of playing the game right. Surprised that Eviction Notice got 9% completion, though; that's not an especially easy one.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Question about Quake 64-are there levels missing from the PC original? I'm playing through Painkiller: Hell Wars and Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the XBOX, and loving both!

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Old reply, but PK:HW and RTCW (both of which I need to get still) are miles beyond Quake for N64. Quake for N64 seems like the PC game but uglier, and without saving (IIRC, maybe there's a memory pak function I don't remember seeing). I believe all of the secrets are in the first level.dave4shmups wrote:Question about Quake 64-are there levels missing from the PC original? Quake II for N64 on the other hand is almost an entirely new game. That's not a bad thing though; it's like yet another expansion pack. Sucks if it's the only version you could play since the levels aren't likely quite up to the PC standard.
ALSO! REASON FOR RESURRECTING THREAD INBOUND
(don't click if you don't like pigtails) OH BLARRG, the Left 4 Dead 2 "Spitter" is terrifying and highly disturbing. It's funny how I've said in the past that games kept getting gorier and scarier - like the move from Morrowind to Oblivion, or from Half-Life to Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead - this is up to the point where I'd consider calling it scary. I don't even want to play as that thing

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
I played the Battlefield 1943 demo and thought it was pretty good.

Me neither! I couldn't possibly condone Zelda's Dead Hand raiding his mom's closet like that.Ed Oscuro wrote:ALSO! REASON FOR RESURRECTING THREAD INBOUND

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
I picked up Haze on the PS3 recently. It's an OK FPS, but not up there with F.E.A.R. 2. Graphics are a tad sub-par. Switching sides midway through is a neat gimmick though- you lose some abilities but gain others. It was worth the $15 I got a used copy for, but I'm sure glad I didn't pay $60.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Does anyone know whatever happened to Ubisoft's Killing Days? That looked amazing back at E3 2005, and while I'm sure it was all CG, I'm equally sure that it would have looked about as good (as Killzone 2 did) had it come out this year.
Also, how is Secret Service for the 360? It looks cool.

I haven't tried SS 360 yet, but unfortunately Killing Days was axed. Shame, since this one looked promising.

*sniff*
RIP Killing Days.
Also, The Wheel of Time kind of sucks (fuck you Legend Entertainment, oh wait you're gone, nevermind), and where did the portals you could see into go? I remember seeing those in the demo, but they're not in the full game. RARGH
But Nosferatu - The Wrath of Malachi is awesome, much more than it has any right to be when you consider that it's MEANT to be very short to play. It even has randomized architecture, which admittedly makes the key hunts worse, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it. Just beat my first boss and got maybe a third of the people rescued.
Did I mention Nosferatu is only 2 hours long? Yep...that's not the only horror movie inspiration, but I won't spoil it all. This is definitely one of those times I've felt that Quake engine-like jerky weapon animations added to the mood.
Everybody who calls themselves an FPS fan owes it to themselves to try this one out. Just play on Easy when starting out because otherwise you'll get your ass kicked in a hurry. Also, tips: Don't waste health, don't reload when there's something in the chamber (the remaining bullets are wasted, Rainbow Six tacticool style) and don't collect too many powder horns (you can only carry 30 of them - meanwhile I still haven't maxed out stakes, at nearly 30, or revolver bullets, at 65 and counting).
I don't think it'll turn out to be the FPS equivalent of Spelunky, or an early single player-only Left 4 Dead 2. It needs randomized bosses, for example, so you can play it over and over and go YEAAAAAH.
I've been seeing Undying mentioned here and there, want to try that one out again. I'm afraid the replayability and especially the lousy endgame will leave me disillusioned, though. Instead I ought to finish up a few of the FPSes I have installed and in various stages of completion on my harddrive. Perhaps Savage 1 & 2 should be next.
RIP Killing Days.

ROFFLE, Valve just linked (via Update News) to a guy who did some TF2 wallpapers (http://steamcommunity.com/id/ghillustrations) and what's the first Steam Group listed? The L4D2 boycott! O lol.

Nosferatu looks cool and I think I'll try it some night. I may be at a disadvantage if only a woman can break his spell, however.
