Metabarons are drawn by Juan Gimenez. Nothing wrong with the art of Incal (quite the opposite), but Metabarons have more compelling story for my money.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil - I enjoyed it quite a bit actually. It reminded me of a mix of Three's Company and a horror movie.

What's that spooty spoot king of the spoots stupid spoot guy doing here?

I did not! Kinda the same thing though with Jodorowsky, though. I dunno, I just don't dig arthouse anymore.xbl0x180 wrote:But you DID see the Kenneth Anger films released by Fantomas (on three DVDs), right?drauch wrote:I've had many chances to see Jodorowsky, and while at one point in my life I was extremely interested, I can't really say I still feel as inclined to give him a chance. Sometimes I dig art house, but the novelty of weird for weird's sake is gone. The films I really like, even if they are often more intellectual, still speak to me emotionally. Lynch still works for me (sometimes) because I think he ultimately still wants to tell some sort of story. Art house though can sometimes just feel like a chore.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Finally checked out Hostel III as it was available at a local Redbox location. It's seems that it was rather released directly to video with a 2011 copyright date (rather than waiting for the proper big screen release with the first two previous Hostel flick releases).
Yep, the Elite Hunters Club (EHC) is out in full force catering to their clientele. This time around, the action is in Las Vegas of all places. This third outing of the Hostel franchise doesn't hold as well as it's first two predecessors but still has the usual gore moments with the victims. The ending does have a nice twist to it.

Super 8
Glad I watched it... won't watch it again though. Interesting story about me trying to see this in the theater but failing. Maybe one day I will share it with you.

Lensman
Beautiful looking 80's SF anime from Kawajiri that unfortunately doesn't quite hold your attention throughout. Perhaps the best hover bike chase ever is overshadowed by an unremarkable ending.
Can't help but think it would be improved greatly if I could find it in subtitles.

Re: Movies you've just watched
The 2011 The Thing prequel does tell of the events that lead up to the opening of the 1982 remake. As for the lead character, her whereabouts & what happens next aren't revealed. It's clearly shown that the Husky dog fleeing the Norwiegian campbase towards the conclusion of the film is the same dog that appears at the beginning of the film & isn't the main female character (but is the alien creature itself trying to look for more humans to prey upon/absorb/assimilate).

Persepolis. I never read the comic, but I really enjoyed the movie. Nice animation and good storytelling.

Alien
2001: A Space Odyssey
Sunshine
My top 3 Sci-fi of all time. Too bad Sunshine is so under appreciated. It's very classy for recent sci-fi and the few creative liberties taken with physics are only a stretch for those who lack imagination.

Great list, and totally agree with Sunshine. Best SF flick in years alongside Moon.circuitface wrote:Alien

Re: Movies you've just watched
Sunshine got a very limited run stateside...it was up & running for only one or two weeks tops at my local theater + the fact that no other theater-chain carried it except for the just the one theater chain in the Central Valley of CA. When it was released on DVD & Blu-Ray formats, I snagged them both -- the surprising thing was each Sunshine DVD & BR copy that I found lying around was the very last copy at my local Costco store. The sound output is quite impressive if running on a 5.1 surround sound setup via Toslink/digital optical cable. The really low frequencies surely give your bass speaker a real workout, indeed, when watching Sunshine.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I thought Sunshine started out promising, but the plot quickly (and suddenly) devolved into a cheap thriller. Moon, on a not dissimilar note, becomes another navel-gazing identity fest that's about 50 years too late to be intriguing, I'd say. I didn't think it was particularly bad, but a rather slight film. Its sad to acknowledge that its mediocre aspirations stand out against the sea of sci-fi-costumed action and fx films of the last 20 years.
Now Alien and 2001, I heartily concur.
Its difficult for me to name another sci-fi film that even approaches those two... Solaris is good, but more of a mystical Tarkovsky rumination. Stanislaw Lem's criticism about the genre of science fiction literature is even more true in film (and never more so today), sadly. And in the climate of film production today, its hard to imagine anything grand being produced that isn't weighted down with the 10,000 anti-intellectual assumptions of hollywood and profit-bearing production in general. More "Moon"s seems to be the best we can hope for.
Now Alien and 2001, I heartily concur.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Moon reminded me a little bit of "The Clone Returns Home" from a year before

Re: Movies you've just watched
A lot of extra detailing went into making the demonic creature shown in Jacob's Ladder (that wasn't shown in the film) that screws with one of the female characters during inside a club & she really enjoys it.

I always discourage others from collecting. There's nothing good I can list from it. The silver lining might be that if others stopped collecting videos altogether, I may be able to get that Ilsa box set for cheepdrauch wrote:Yeah, my collection is getting pretty overwhelming. I won't list how much crap I have, but sometimes I look at it as a crowning achievement and other times an impossible void to fill.

I view Ken Anger short films the way I see music videos. I don't see it as high art or anything deep and abstract to think about. Hell, I'd consider David Lynch and David Cronenberg more of a chore since their movies go way out there for 2 hours, whereas a Ken Anger film is 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes at the most. I just dig the look and the style.CMoon wrote:Sometimes I dig art house, but the novelty of weird for weird's sake is gone. I think video art can be long-winded and look really crappy, but the only reason I don't collect those is because a lot of them are not commercially available (only Wegman and Viola seem to be commercialised)

I discourage people to collect solely for my own benefit. I don't want people getting their hands on (insert item) instead of me!
Collecting is my life, really. I wouldn't have it any other way.
