It's out. Came out 2 days ago.

TxK definitely does tap into that Wipeout PS1 culture. And I think the Vita finally has its one killer app. The game is soooooo good. Simple yet utterly addictive. Cheap too.

Edit: it kind of reminds me of Tetris (although I never got the appeal of that game). Such a simple concept, yet executed flawlessly.

Edit x 2: Eurogamer reviewed it. My heart sank when I found out it was Martin Robinson who was going to be reviewing it (as I don't often agree with his opinions), but I'm pleased to say that the game got a 9.

Martin is a shmupper. I'm sure it's the right score. ;)

For me this is the Vita's first must buy game. How much did it cost you? I assume it's a download only?
If it's a patch on the quality of Tearaway or the twitchy, scoring-focused loveliness of OlliOlli, then I'm sold. And I trust Martin's tastes with shmups, so I'd best head to PSN right now.

It's a funny story. You might find Andrew is the best person to tell it in my absence, but I'll be happy to regale you on my next trip home. ;)

TxK got a 9 by Edge as well (not that I particularly like that publication anymore).
The result is hypnotic. This is twitch gaming at its finest, with beautifully tuned thumbstick controls and a pulsing rave soundtrack that only seems to focus the mind more sharply. Meanwhile, the ability to resume from the point at which you perished makes it as easy to consume in short bursts as to devote longer sessions to. And while this is still instantly identifiable as a Llamasoft production, Minter has reined in some of his more idiosyncratic touches, while retaining his unique signature. Dynamic, thrilling and wholly invigorating, TxK isn't just one of the best games on Vita: it might just be the best Minter's ever made, too.
Metro also gives it a 9.
Well, what a year the PS Vita is having. With still nothing of quality released on any other format bar the PC, Sony’s portable has been playing host to the likes of OlliOlli, Dustforce, Surge Deluxe, and Toukiden: The Age Of Demons. Not games likely to do its sales much good but as eclectic a mix of titles as any format could wish for. The unexpected bonanza isn’t over yet either, since we’ve still got our review of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc to come. And of course there’s this… one of the best arcade games ever made.
Currently has a 89% rating on Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-vita/txk

I've really liked my Vita from day one, and there's been enough good games over time, but of late it's really become a superbly supported machine games-wise. It suddenly feels that maybe the Vita could yet come into it's own in the mainstream. I just still wonder if that mainstream is happy with a phone for portable gaming, rather than a dedicated, tailored device.

I know you're having fun with your new toy, but it's a PS Vita, and between you and Friendly I don't know where to puke.

$9.99 for TxK and of course I have $7.59 in my wallet.

Regarding TxK: I read it somewhere that if you have your mind set on something, you'll find a way. And if you're not as inclined, you'll find an excuse. Take that as you will regarding your decision to purchase TxK...

Regarding the Vita: of course you would never have me saying that about 3DS (which is my newer toy in comparison, and which you tend to defend by bringing up sales figures - which I don't give a damn about, otherwise we might as well talk about CoD and FIFA all day). The 3DS only has about 3-5 games that I would ever invest my time or money in (despite its mass-market penetration and success), and I already have 2. The Vita has more games that appeal to me, and has more interesting games in the pipeline that are infinitely more tantalising as a proposition.

The PSP came close, but the Vita is the first portable machine I have ever truly fallen in love with. The Vita is the PSP evolved. Actually, scratch that. The Vita is handheld gaming evolved.

It is really fucking weird, yes.

Anyway, slapped $10 bucks credit in. I'm ready to TxK like it's 1993!

Don't know... Steam OS could become a major gaming force in 3-5 years. And lets not forget the living room, what with Valve coming in with their (iterative) Steam machines...

^ Ha ha, I like it!

EDIT: So TxK = utterly amazing.

Been playing for two hours straight. Managed to claw my way to 49th on Survival and into the top 100 on Classic. Username: Hyperjaw

I'd recommend buying a Vita just for this game, it's incredible. ;)

NIS America just announced two more Vita games for 2014: Disgaea 4 and Danganronpa 2 (they also announced Mugen Souls Z, Battle Princess of Arcadia and Fairy Fencer F for PS3).
All games will be released in the North America and Europe in both physical and digital form, except for Battle Princess of Arcadia which will be sold on PSN only.

Excellent, I've been waiting for that Disgaea 4 announcement. I've had the game since release day, but it's hard for me to fit console gaming into my life. Can't wait for this handheld version.

Is there a post that details use of the japanese PSN store for shooting games?

I've just started messing with this and so far just have the Salamander PSP pack (though I had the UMD, oh well).

I know there are some other quality games to pick up but I'm not sure what they are, especially given my failures in navigation so far.

What options are there for online multiplayer games on the Vita, either out now or coming out within the next couple months?

A friend of mine really wants to play something online with me, so I picked up Soul Sacrafice... but I cannot stand the game. I don't mind "Hunting" games, its just this one in particular that rubs me the wrong way. I feel bad for constantly blowing him off, but I seriously don't want to play this game. I told him I'd find us a better game to play online, so don't let me down!

Oh, and TxK is fucking amazing. Finally found a game that might get more play than DJ Max.

Maybe Borderlands 2? Coming to Vita on March 18th.

I've played that one quite a bit on the 360, but it could still suffice. Loot-centric games like Borderlands would be the best, but I was hoping for a new experience.

Is Ragnarok Oddysey decent?

It's only a month away, but we haven't been shown so much as a single screenshot. This port will likely be shit.

How about Terraria then?

That's how I've been spelling 'odyssey' too since the first Oddworld game. :)

To answer your question, Ragnarok Odyssey is decent as far as second-tier hunting action games are concerned. It's flashy, mindless and far less involved than Monster Hunter, but good fun overall. Keep in mind that there's an updated version of the game called Ragnarok Odyssey ACE which Xseed will be localizing this spring.

Also, you might want to check out Toukiden: The Age of Demons, a fantasy-flavored hunting action game from Koei.

If you didn't like Soul Sacrifice, you might enjoy Toukiden. Or you could wait for Freedom Wars.

Ragnarok Odyssey was meh in my opinion, but then again I love Soul Sacrifice, so take that as you will. But if you do decide to give RO a shot, make sure you go with Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, since it has more content.

Dragon's Crown is a very good choice if you'd rather have something that isn't a MH clone, especially if you haven't played it on PS3 yet.

Finally got my hands a Vita PCH2000. Being a new Sony User and with the intention to buy a Ps4 in short time, I doubt getting a US PSN+ or a domestic PSN+... As you said there's a huge difference in prices, sales and content, but will affect ps4 multiplayer experience with US local servers o introducing lag when playing? Maybe stupid question, but I am new to the system and I don't want to have 2 paid accounts to play properly both systems
