Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'm watching Minami-ke at the moment, and haven't laughed this hard in ages.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Looks like something overpriced that NIS America would distribute here.Icarus wrote:I'm watching Minami-ke at the moment, and haven't laughed this hard in ages.
Anyone read the bad news that Bandai is going outta biz? No more Gundam and other special collection sets!

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yeah, I saw that a couple of weeks ago. Last I read they aren't going to release any new material but plan on releasing their current items until license runs out. Oh boy.

Noboru Ishiguro died a few days ago. A moment of silence to the man who directed such awesome anime as the original Macross, Space Battleship Yamato and my personal favourite Legend of Galactic Heroes. Go watch something of his if you haven't already.

This isn't about the Japanese Bandai (Namco Bandai Holdings), it's about their American branch, Bandai Entertainment, which will stop distributing anime directly. Instead Bandai will licnese its anime to other distributors in America.

This article nicely explains how terribly Bandai handled Bandai Entertainment:

Thanks, Ishiguro-san, and please forgive those who weasel your departure as an occasion to whine about trivial matters, even if on a cheesy videogame forum.

finished Turn A Gundam - overall I enjoyed it a lot all the way through.
watching LOGH and I think you guys are right, it really is amazing so far - I've watched My Conquest Is The Sea Of Stars, Golden Wings and I'm now on Episode 1 of the gaiden.
The script is so clever and well written, and the music is just consistently outstanding. Can't wait to start the 110 episode marathon.
I've also just watched Patlabor OVA - I also thought this was v good. Perfect balance of humour, action and suspense - and this bit just had me in stitches:

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
You can't say their problems were entirely brought upon themselves, though. They were a natural outcome of the moribund market for DVDs, the prominence of easily available same-day fansubs in HD, and the lack of new mega-popular franchises like Naruto, Cowboy Bebop and DBZ. The US manga industry is several degrees more fucked--everything moved online, people got sick of Naruto and Bleach, companies licensed too much low-quality shit no one wanted, and the comics-collector mentality never caught on. Vertical's managed to attract a literate, scholarly demographic outside of the fanbase with their Tezuka releases, but they're still ailing enough that they've had to rely on Kickstarter to get stuff published lately.Friendly wrote:This isn't about the Japanese Bandai (Namco Bandai Holdings), it's about their American branch, Bandai Entertainment, which will stop distributing anime directly. I really think the scene's going to return to the way it was in the nineties within the next few years, except worse. Merchandise will be entirely the domain of importers and the few remaining specialty stores, anime besides Pokemon will have vanished from American TV, physical manga releases will be nonexistent (and absent from bookstores), and the only anime you'll find outside streams and fansubs will be GitS, Bebop, DBZ, and the occasional price-gouged Aniplex release. The problem is that this stuff was seen as just a fad or passing curiosity for most people, not an ongoing interest.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
If that's the case, I wonder if I will become a more harrcore collectr0 or if I will leave the scene again only to come back once anime is a fad again in 10-15 years. I've sure as hell collected enough in the past few years to last a few more without having to make any purchases and avoid all those NIS and Viz releases at their retail prices

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I thought it was real bad (the very first Patlabor OAV, that is), except for the opening. A proof that being old doesn't make anime good, if I ever saw one. It was like Muteki Kanban Musume or Shinryaku! Ika Musume of its time.Raytrace wrote:I've also just watched Patlabor OVA - I also thought this was v good. oh wells, I deffo liked it a lot - I do not know those animes you referenced but looking at them briefly I don't really see how the original Patlabor could be like them, is it because they have 'knowing' humour in them or something?

Equally typical of their time and equally vapid. Oh yes, Noir did just as little for me, but it had some notable music and pretty backdrops at that.Raytrace wrote:oh wells, I deffo liked it a lot - I do not know those animes you referenced but looking at them briefly I don't really see how the original Patlabor could be like them, is it because they have 'knowing' humour in them or something?
In other news, Gintama keeps rocking hard.

Yeah, Sougo's at it again. Not a patch on the stuff Tae-chan would did there, of course.

Patlabor II - art and music I adored, story I liked a lot but I missed some of the light-heartedness of the OVA...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yep, Patlabor II is Oshii pulling no punches at getting his philosophy and worldview out there. It's not "fun" like the OVA and first Pato movie, though still immensely entertaining, and by far the most significant work to come out of the franchise.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Man, I hope it's true that Gintama is ending soon. I've been meaning to watch that shit for ages but the near endless episode count kept putting me off. On an unrelated note, Mysterious Girlfriend X looks pretty neat. That art style is just so old school, and it seems to be quite atypical for it's genre.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Wow. The next episode of Bleach will be the final one. I was starting to doubt this would ever happen.
Never got into the series (or any big SJ series besides Death Note), but I get the impression that none of its fans really continued to like it past the original arc. And there were, what, seven iterations of the PSP fighting game? At least we got some Treasure games out of the franchise.
Also, the Naruto manga is supposedly wrapping up for good soon. End of an era! How long till there's anything to replace these pillars of the industry? One Piece is the only comparable series that's still ongoing, and it never caught on over here.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
One Piece is also the only one of them that has decent overarching story and solid character development. You really feel how the progression of events is not limited to a particular location the arc is taking place in, but happens simultaneously around the world, one event logically leading to another. The epic scale is all thanks to that sense of continuity that is taking place on all levels.
