Basically everything Sakimoto & Iwata worked on, particularly Bad Omen, Gauntlet, Midnight Resistance and Verytex. I keep direct from console FLAC rips of all four soundtracks in my VGM folder for regular blasting.

Battle Mania Dai Gin Jou is excellent too, particularly if you like Thunder Force-style synth metal.

Gauntlet IV, man. Treasure had some good tunes too. (edit: reply to cicada)

I really like the Atomic Runner mixes. I wonder, of the Data East updates on the MD, whether their snooker game also had good tunes.

-Slap Fight MD
Check these ones out then:

I forgot about this game. How does this game stack up to the other TMNT games? Might need to add it to my list...

I always loved the sound of Data East's MD games, Vapor Trail in particular.

The aforementioned Doom Troopers had really nice music, as far as I remember.

Can't say how it compares to the other games in terms of control, but it's fun enough to play for a clear on it's own merits, just really repetitive compared to what I see of say TiT. It's clear that Konami put the effort into the SNES game as ROTS/HH seems to take assets from that one and staple it together without a lot of imagination. The boss rush level is acknowledged to be a prime example of this.

Having said that it plays really well with an interesting spacing game using the run button into grab/slide, and as I suggested before the music is fuggin' awesome FM and much better than the SNES version in that aspect, a lot closer to the arcade version of TiT.

Perhaps even better.

Monster World IV (aka Wonder Boy VI) has a really fantastic OST.
Whip Rush has some excellent tracks.
Viewpoint does a surprisingly admirable job of attempting to replicate the insane audio of the MVS/AES original.

Oh man, Mega Drive music... I think the thread could go on for another 40 pages, just on that topic alone.

Pretty much everything that's been posted already is ace. I'll add a couple more that haven't been mentioned yet:

All killer, no filler:

Elemental Master
Master of Monsters (turn the volume up, this is some intense apocalyptic shit!)
Gleylancer
Granada
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Hellfire

Games with some outstanding tracks:

Jewel Master
Alisia Dragoon
Burning Force
Rolling Thunder 3
Time Trax
Shadow Dancer
The Super Shinobi II (I think it's better than Koshiro's Super Shinobi, tbh)
Crude Buster
Sol-Deace

How's Time Trax fare? I've passed it up so many times now, but it always just screamed mediocre for some reason.

Some of Granada's FM patches make me want to yell at someone sometimes (Wolfteam's patch work in general, really), although it's still infinitely better than any western patch work I've heard on the Genesis (even standout Western soundtracks like Adventures of Batman and Robin have these hyper twangy patches that remind one of butts and bells and fuzz, like FM patches on the Adlib -- but it's a really dark, mechanical soundtrack, so it fits).

Granada's soundtrack is still wonderful as hell.

and yes, AB&R should make that list, it's really killer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV-7Ns1 ... 6571E991CD
although, it would be nice if AB&R so much as touched the PSG ever, that's one of those things that really, really, really filled out the Genesis's sound nicely

On another note, I still love BK3's soundtrack to death, even though it's not a top-on-the-system contender, and it's not consistent in quality at all. You really need a taste for club music to enjoy it though.
It makes you entirely ready to smash some face though, and suits the game perfectly.
The drumwork really makes you hyped as hell too. That's at least consistent as fuck. It's unrelentingly aggressive, and I love it. I wish AB&R's FM patches were as nice, since BK3's would fit rather well.

Go listen to it, all of it.

It is - that's why. You didn't miss anything. There are maybe two or three good moments in the game, and I think one of them is the opening sequence. That's not really that much to go for...You also can play essentially the same game on SNES, just with a terrible soundtrack, so it's now just terrible all around.

BTW, I have to agree with null about SoR3 here. Even the mediocre stuff fits the game pretty well, and some of the nonsense is just timed perfectly to set the people heart on fire.

I was playing Whip Rush & Vapor Trail tonight as a short break between my Musha Aleste credits.

Both games are cool. Feeling what I've heard so far of Vapor Trail's soundtrack (good look GSK).

Doesn't Vapor Trail only have one track?

Whip Rush is nice for sure. And agreed on SOR3, love the tracks in there.

I've only made it to stage 2 so far and it does seem to repeat the main track in both stages. But it's a really good track!

Boss music is a different song, as well as game intro and some jingles.

Yeah, there are a few tracks, but I think the stage music is the same throughout the game, same with the arcade version as well.

I agree though, the tracks that are there are very nice.

There are a couple stage tunes, a few different boss tunes and various tunes for the credits, continue/name entry, etc. The stage tunes do take a few minutes to loop, which I feel is pretty decent for a game from... what, 1989? Either way, it's the guitar sound that makes it; DECO's MD games always had great guitar.

I've never played the arcade version so I don't know how the MD port holds up, aurally or otherwise.

Rumour has it Hitoshi Sakimoto programmed the MD version of Vapor Trail's soundtrack. Sounds way better than the original.

Since my question in the isometric games thread has yet to be answered, I might as well ask here: is Arcus Odyssey for Genesis as good as they come if you can't read Japanese, or there is any reason to rather play the Sharp X68k version?
I found Granada and Final Zone MD ports inferior, if still pretty good. On the other hand, we've been playing some co-op here lately, so Arcus Odyssey and Gauntlet IV emulated on Wii could make for some good times.

Then, although it's off-topic here, does anybody know anything about other Arcus games?

I've actually thought about picking up the series lately. Missed my chance months back in town when I found a copy local, and now it's gone and the price is much higher online. I was thinking about picking up the MegaCD version, but the regular Arcus games (sans Odyssey) are more like Phantasy Star dungeon crawlers, and very short ones at that--or so says the internet.

He did the same for most of Data East's MD output, so that would not surprise me. Would be interesting to know for sure though.

I never gave Whip Rush much of a second chance when I played it (felt sort of slow). I might have to try it out again.

I think my favorite Vic Tokai shmup is Battle Mania Daiginjou (leaps and bounds above Trouble Shooter imo), but maybe Whip Rush had something going on for it outside of great music.

The previous pages remind me also to check out Mystic Defender, to get my competent side-scroller (with creepy gooey enemy design) on.

If you have a Game Genie, a region switch modded Genesis, or a JP Genesis, definitely play in the Japanese mode where some of the enemies are even creepier and gooier.
