Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I remember the cover for that looking like some cheep doujin, but since it was semi-related to Yukikaze, I got it to complete the set

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou? I almost died laughing when I watched the first episode. Brilliant stuff.

Don't make up such blatant lies, nothing good has ever come from a Shaft anime.

To use an Blu-Ray player with a proper calibrated/adjusted 1080p HDTV setup = pure eye candy!
Watching the Blu-Ray version of Akira is like night & day compared to watching it on DVD/VHS formats on an old-school CRT TV monitor setup. It's still possible to use a Blu-Ray player on an older CRT TV that has component video inputs.
Even watching Gundam Unicorn on BR is quite something.

Any region-free blu-ray players that are recommended

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Drauch: overall, yes, several old movies have been restored to their former glory.
I watched again Honneamise...several times, this period.
I believe that this movie was doomed to fail. The themes, plot, the general sensibility behind this work are not really Japanese. I felt that Gainax made the definitive European sci-fi movie, something that could have been written by Michael Moorcock, designed by Moebius and directed by Wim Wenders. It was simply too far away from the tastes of the average anime consumer.
I am only happy that, in the long end, the Gainax guys survived and thrived, even if by making bullshit. If they would have bankrupted because of producing such a masterpiece in the wrong time and place, then it would have been a cosmic tragedy of Greek-like proportions (I mean: a la Euripides).

Rikitaro is a musician whose dream is to become a rock star just like Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison, but at the age of 27 that dream is fading away rapidly. He is given one last shot by a record label to sign a deal but before that, they need him to get into better shape so that he is easier to sell. He stumbles upon a gym which is also filming a boxing reality TV show. As they say, as one door closes, another one opens...

Hey drboom,
You might be interested in Gantz, which Btooom! shares some commonalities with. It has some of the old Heavy Metal comics influence shot through a Japanese sensibility. It also takes a lot of risks which I find refreshing. Blame is also recommended.
I've also been really into Kaiji. Ping Pong by Tekonkinkreet manga artist Matsumoto Taiyo is really good as well.

I have been reading scanlated versions of Btooom! and Otogi Matsuri as I am a big fan of Joker Jun's artwork. I really like both stores, with Otogi Matsuri having some traditional Japanese folklore mixed in with current day events and Btooom! being a video game come to life. Both are really well done, good characters. I have no love for vampires or teen drama or need for fan service.
I went to Chicago Comics and looked through the series there and didn't see anything I thought I would like so, maybe someone here can recommend something good? I'm also a big fan of Star Blazers, Bubblegum Crisis and Full Metal Panic!
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
OK - I just read the Wiki on Gantz and I'm gonna go check that out immediately.
I also got Mushishi on the way as well from an earlier recommendation - thanks to both of you for some stellar recommendations.

Gantz is a great anime, but it really did piss me off (although I believe that was what was intended)
I wish they would have continued into the rest of the manga.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The designs of pretty much everything (especially the fashion) are poor in Wings of Honneamise and I don't believe Moebius would have designed anything in that vein. Les Maîtres du temps is a European film actually designed by Moebius and while the Hungarian animation is rather crude in that one, the designs rock.Randorama wrote:I felt that Gainax made the definitive European sci-fi movie, something that could have been written by Michael Moorcock, designed by Moebius and directed by Wim Wenders.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I sure as hell wouldnt. I thought Gantz was one of the wost anime I`ve ever seen. Contrived plot, ugly art design that has no consistency, unlikeable characters and horrendously misogynist, even for anime (and this is coming from someone with an Overfiend avatar). The main female character is usually referred to as Big Tits or other similar names.drboom wrote:OK - I just read the Wiki on Gantz and I'm gonna go check that out immediately.
A worthless, worthless piece of shit anime.
IMO.

The designs in Wings of Honneamise are universally poor. The eighties had seen a bunch of better designs, such as The Forever War.

"Bunch" in English means "small number". But please feel free to discuss graphics00rz with the local weeaboos, and to be in denial that Akira is the greatestest animated movie ever.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Stuff and oversized picture

...Ironically, several movies of the '80s had a huge "inspiration" in Moebius' work (more like: try to ape other authors...).
Moebius himself gave an interview on this "relation" with Miyazaki, Otomo and other (then) emergent japanese authors. I found an Italian translation on some very old magazine of the early '90s.
I am aware that Otomo acknowledged a huge Moebius influence for Akira, but can anyone suggest other European or Latin-American authors that "inspired" mangakas? You Argentinian guys should have a few tips, I guess!

Moebius' influence in Akira is pretty obvious (that flying bike of sorts), but there's nothing in Wings of Honneamise that looks like designed by him.
In Eden: It's an Endless World! by Endo Hiroki there's a little girl browsing a Guido Crepax artbook to be seen, so there's that.

Just finished Vol 1 - - so far, really good. Its pretty far out there and the fan service is bizarre, but I like it. I can see why it has its detractors though - violent, dirty, dealing with appalling morality - but its definitely interesting.dunpeal2064 wrote:Gantz is a great anime, but it really did piss me off (although I believe that was what was intended)
