I really need to brush up on my knowledge of Richard Pryor standups. Been meaning to do so for a while but never got around to it for some reason. I'm a huge fan of Eddie Murphy's standup shows and he always praises Pryor. And so do my other fave comics (Larry David, Norm Macdonald and many more)

School of Rock (2003)
Eehhh, it was ok, not a fan of Jack Black. Surprising that after 10 years, this movie got a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a Disney series adaptation. Oh well.

Thermae Romae II
Supposed to be more crazy, but instead most of the movie is spent as a pretty good drama film. When they do comedy though, that is some good stuff. Seeing Romans with zucchini strapped to their heads like the Japanese sumo wrestlers at the start of the movie got me chuckling each time I saw it, even during dramatic moments. The course of history is set to change because a long lost brother of Keioniusu is around screwing up things thanks to the senate's wishes. I enjoyed it, not as much as the first, but still a good movie.

They should have done the entire movie as a Rock Opera, not just the beginning and the end.

Grave of the fireflies
Heartbreaking as expected, and the 2008 version is nowhere near as good.

SPL
Seen this a few times already, but an upgrade to blu ray and it looked fantastic. That ending still comes out of nowhere! Has Sammo Hung been the baddie in any other movies? I tried thinking and couldn't think of any besides SPL. Donnie Yen does some good action, but that's really what you're here for, not his acting nor his staring while holding his pistol.

More like absolutely depressing, especially since I do have a younger sister.
And for fuck's sake, they remade it 10 years ago? It sure needed one.

They didn't remake it just once! There was a tv movie version in 2005 as well!

Roxanne (1987): ***

Rom-com starring Steve Martin basically playing Steve Martin (with a comically exaggerated nose) in a modern interpretation of Cyrano de Bergerac. Can be pretty funny when Steve Martin is able to just act, rather average otherwise, aside from various pratfalls provided by the rather inept volunteer fire department that Martin's character is the chief of.

I kind of have to agree, here, and I'm *way* more conservative than most on this board. In the same vein, the "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" movie was as glorious a musical as one could ask for, rivaling any Disney production (musically) that you would choose to put up against it. I mean, it's absolutely, viciously immoral...but the music and writing is top-notch *incredible*.

I suppose this is a pretty accurate statement, though I think you're underplaying the comedy between what's-his-name and an absolutely stunning Daryl Hannah. She's actually pretty good in this, but nothing, NOTHING AT ALL can make me give the movie an all-time classic designation as long as Shelley Duvall is in it. Merciful, sweet heaven...I can kind of see why she fits in "The Shining" because it's a horror movie and Jack needs someone to be sick of, and her profile *kind of* fits Olive Oyl in "Popeye". I fail to see why she's anywhere *near* this movie, or just about any filmed medium of any kind.

*Yikes* is she one scary-looking, er..."human". There. That's probably semi-accurate.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - Chapter 1 (2017)
Live action version of Part 4, goes until the battle with Keicho Nijimura. They seemed to have filmed this in Italy, making Morioh look very lovely. Everyone has ridiculous hairdo, which is fine, but Koichi looks too handsome and tall, and Jotaro's actor is a bit too old. The Stands' CG work works fine here, I think.
Unfortunately, this movie is a bit like FF VII Advent Children, in the fact that if you don't know shit about the JoJo series, things will go over your head real quick, as they don't really give a flashback or some explanation of the Joestar family's... bizarre adventures. 8)

Lucky

Utterly delightful. Harry Dean Stanton's swan song. I would assume most actors aren't given the opportunity to go out on such a high note, which is a sad thing.

Call Me By Your Name

Not as memorable for me as the above (I watched them both on a very long flight) but nonetheless a well put together story. The linguistic flexibility of the cast was interesting, as was the recreation of early 80's Italian country side. Some good moments by the always impressive Michael Stuhlbarg as well.

As per the animoo thread, worked out okay for Starship Troopers. (Which is nothing like the book. Nor the OAV, probably)

(Starship Troopers really fucks with a lot of established trends. Paul Verhoeven just makes whatever he wants and it's fine. While Paul Feig can only sow ruin.)

(Pauls are powerful, dangerous people.)

Ditto.
I went with Jabberwocky and Brazil, myself after I first hear about Quixote. Have not watched the trailer, though.

Looking forward to to the film.

I can't be the only one hoping for a release one day of some lovingly cobbled version of Orson Welles' Don Quixote. Even if unfinished (and better than that bad 1992 hack job by Franco). Apparently Oja Kodar just won a lawsuit for a large chunk of footage...

I mean, they're releasing Other Side of the Wind after all this time, so anything can happen!
