My super heavy Carlos Montoya kick has started to slow down. I've been standing around alot lately building RGB cables for my consoles and trying to dial this ArcadeVGA card like I want it. For that kind of low energy busy work I need comedy or I'll get cranky.

Greg Giraldo "Good Day to Cross a River" best "new" comic I've heard since Mitch Hedberg

Bill Hicks "Rant in E Minor" would you believe I never heard Bill Hicks until about six months ago? He says everything I always say so I obviously believe him to be a genius.

Steven Wright "I Have a Pony" Steven is the master.

:D

A buddy turned me on to this when I was 22 or so. He borrowed my VHS Day of the Dead, but left his copy of "Rant..." as collateral. He never did return that tape. Considering I would have chunked that pan-and-scan monstrosity for the DVD years later, I think I got the better end of the deal.

So Pa, have you seen Hicks' "Sane Man" video yet? Pure gold, sir.

No but I'll try to get right on it. I'm quite taken with the man. He and I seem to be on the exact same page on most issues.

I just listened to Strategic Grille Locations for the first time in a few years and it made me sad.

My little brother won tickets off the radio to see him at the Funny Bone in Boise Idaho. We had no idea who he was and we've been devotees ever since. That was the day he came up with "duck at subway" material. I've seen him three other times. He wasn't so hot at Giggles in Seattle but his last show at the Moore Theater was insane. He died very shortly thereafter. RIP.

I never got to see him live. A friend of mine was going to get tickets for himself and I as Christmas presents to go see him in January. He never bought the tickets and he said something to the effect "We'll see him next time he comes around." and he died a few months later.

I think that show at the Moore may have been his last one. It was in December.

One line of his I love to death and I'm pretty certain was never on a commercially available recording went like "Is a hippopotamus a hippopotamus or just a really cool opotamus?" Brilliant :)

I saw his Comedy Central special a long time ago and I thought it was horrible. The problem is all of those specials suck because they cut half the routine and the language, and they have to rush through all the jokes so the pacing is ruined.

Mitch had a notorious history of doing poor work when he felt slighted by his employers. Something was definitely wrong that night.

I stood around for an hour waiting to get in for a second set at some shitass fly-by-night comedy club here. When the first crowd emptied out they said he was pissed off at the club and on a nonstop rant. He drank so much he puked on people and then cancelled the second set. Not the most professional move. We were annoyed but he then told a horrible story of mistreatment and general bullshitting on the part of the venue which to me was very understandable. And besides, comics are like rockers, if they get too professional they lose their soul.

I used to like them more than I do now. But I still think they're pretty good. I like the green one the best. I think it was the second album. They were effing excellent the one time I saw 'em live though. I didn't realize Russell Simins (sp?) was a 7ft ogre

PS - Sane Man is better than Rant in E Minor, IMO, if it's the DVD I'm thinking of. Very worth checking out.

Patton Oswalt's new album is worth borrowing from someone. "Death Bed - the bed that eats people!"

Fantastic album. I cannot wait for Strawberry Jam to be released in September. After reading your previous post Rob it looks like you really couldn't wait. Impressions?

Make sure to Panda Bears latest if you haven't already.

It was actually the Panda Bear album that hooked me, so I'm not sure what my impressions of Strawberry Jam would be worth to someone who has heard a lot more of them. Anyways, just comparing it to Sung Tongs it seems less jam-oriented (ha?). Catchier, pop-like songs. Can't say which of the two I will prefer in the long-term, but highly doubt that it would disappoint.

Feels is also wonderful, probably better than Sung Tongs as a whole. Mid- September can't come soon enough. Lots of new music seems to be dropping around that time.

Bishop Allen - The Broken String (OK)
Bob Mould - Workbook (frustrating so far, the songs have potential but never take off. The whole time you're waiting for the distorted guitars and heavy drums to kick in)
Superchunk - No Pocky for Kitty (They sound just like Dinosaur Jr, I should like this more than I do. Still good)
Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This to Memory (Power Pop is a strange thing. Some bands totally suck and some are great, yet it all pretty much sounds the same. This is pretty good)
Tokyo Police Club - A Lesson in Crime (good)

Amy Winehouse? More like wHinehouse LOLOL. Nah seriously, she sucks.

What Husker Du album do you guys recommend? I got New Day Rising some time back but I didn't really get into it... don't think I was in the mood for that sort of thing at the time.

Dinosaur Jr's You're Living All Over Me is becoming one of my favorite albums.

I'm not too big on Bob Mould these days so I may not be the guy to advise you on this. Anyway, if you haven't heard Sugar I'd start there. Maybe that Copper Blue. If you like that then go right ahead with just about any Husker Du. Unfortunately I can't even remember any of the names of Husker Du's records so I can't even give a proper recommendation. The main reason I stopped listening was because it all started to sound the same to me. Maybe I'm the only one. My best friend for the past 30 years still loves anything Mould ever did and says he likes Husker Du the best.

Whinosaurus Junior is the same way. I was in love with the whole schmeal when I was 14ish. It eventually faded from my life quite naturally and when I tried to listen again I was disappointed. My enthusiasm for proper blues music has really stripped these honkie whiners of all the power they once had in my life.

Zen Arcade sounds more like what I was expecting to hear. I've listened to some snippets of Copper Blue, that's not my thing much at all...

For me the hardcore stuff is meh. Off New Day Rising I like Celebrated Summer...Flip Your Wig has the title track and 'Makes no sense at all...' Standing in the Rain is another decent song of theirs. That's about all the Du I listen to. They're sort of corny songs, but good. Hate Paper Doll and one or two others are okish, definitely check out the albums if you like their sound.

Dinosaur Jr...can't really go wrong with them. They'll rock your face like AC/DC but also break your heart more than any emo band...any of their albums have at least one good song. The problem with them is that they're really not a good live band. At all. But check out freesofree.net if you want free live stuff from them (it's legal, all that's required is a free login, like this forum). I'd see them live if they came near me because I love them but I wouldn't expect great renditions of the songs, and they play really loud.

They're genius because they broke everyone's rules...effects, solos, and mainstream influences were all taboo in late 80's punk. J. is still the only soloist who can improvise and make it sound halfway musical.

Don't kid yourself with those last two sentences.

As far as Mascis goes I'd like to see Witch.

And funny thing, but I can't recall Husker Du ever being a "hardcore" band. Everything I can remember (not much to be honest) is sort of a lo-fi version of Sugar. What albums have the hardcore sound?
