GamerGate - and it's continuing aftermath.

As always, there's a RegalSin quote for this.
<RegalSin>I learned the phrase "Kiss my dick and suck my ass" from Mystical Ninja... I learned the phrase "Snap Pussy" from Super Mario RPG... God Almighty I realize now that most games take things and themes from real life.

Nothing says "didn't grow up" quite like "unshaven guy in a t-shirt asking for money [online]."
Am I the only one wishing that suits were once again required in order to take people seriously as professionals?
I hope that comes back soon and we look at the last decade the same way we look through our parents' 60-70s yearbooks (with shame and bemusement).

Any moron can put on a suit. And people are still required to wear suits at interviews right?
As if that somehow means they're more capable of doing [insert shitty admin job here] than someone not in smart attire. It's a ritual.
Oh jeez BIL what've you done!?

Obviously anyone can, but in my general experience, people who are able to show just a smidge of effort when it comes to their appearance and how they present themselves to others are just that more productive, at the very least.Blinge wrote:Any moron can put on a suit. And you'd be amazed, coming from HR people, how many "morons" don't even do the simple things - like wear suits at interviews, shake hands, and any other assortment of "soft skills" that are now in short supply around the US.

He's really trying to make a go of this. I don't think many will take the luscious bait this time though. I can't look away... it is hard out there on the oppression circuit for a FUCKING WHITE MALE, it would seem. (I think that is the correct nomenclature?)

There's one proven way he could gain ground, but it would require... a certain small transaction.

Re: GamerGate
Unfortunately, until we collectively learn that it's actually safe to simply ignore them and let their silliest declarations speak for themselves, because they're not so close to taking over the world that it'll be all over if we dare turn our backs for even a moment, they'll continue to reap precisely the ugly, self-destructive over-reactions they're seeking from at least a small segment of "the opposition", and laugh all the way to the proverbial, if not literal, bank every single time. Frankly, whether or not you believe that the media is hopelessly biased in their favor or not, it's still a bad strategy to obsess over every ridiculous thing they post.

Re: GamerGate
There's something disconcerting about it. One analogy that came to mind is the "moeblob" shit in anime. This one has its own set of tropes that exist for their own sake without pertaining to a semblance of an interesting story. It earnestly relies on who the characters are supposed to be to make up for this deficiency just as moeblob hot garbage depends on the characters themselves to move things along and pander to a niche audience. Besides, as a matter of personal taste, I really don't like the designs, so right off the bat it's not something I want to watch. Now, I've seen plenty of animated shows with designs that are not very good, but there were other aspects (e.g., music, themes, writing) that can make a show really good. Steven Universe doesn't have that.

Re: GamerGate
For me, it just is that a lot of those Pen Ward style cartoons are a little overly-similar in style (bubblegum colors, noodle arms etc). It makes everything feel a little samey, especially when everything is trying to do the same type of humor that feels a wee bit too much hipster for my taste*

*compared with the "offend everyone at all costs" aesthetic of the so-called 90s renaissance a la John K. and co., but I guess a lot of people were aping that style back in the day as well.

Re: GamerGate
I'm not a huge fan of the modern Cartoon Network. There's one or two shows I like, but even Boomerang has less of the classic shows I like and instead of actually making a real schedule and trying to fit some classic stuff in, they show everything in mini marathons. There doesn't even seem to bit a consistent schedule. Half of the Be Cool Scooby Doo episodes didn't air on the date listed in the guide. I had to watch them online. It's also annoying that stuff like Uncle Grandpa and Teen Titans Go airs constantly. I don't know what to make of Steven Universe. I was like "what the heck am I watching" when I watched an episode.

Re: GamerGate
I have a pretty high threshold for irredeemable junk and stuff that is overly self-aware or has hackneyed writing. I like most of Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Amazing World Of Gumball, Teen Titans Go, and the Dadaist Adult Swim stuff such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Somehow, the characters, events, and surroundings have a reason to exist in their respective worlds. The writing can come off as trying too hard to be hip, but, hey, at least they're trying something.
Steven Universe doesn't even try... it's just random and weird and whimsy shapes and colours on screen with no apparent intent and don't really do much of anything, except to have or gain new "powers" as they need. Any kind of problem or adversity is quickly solved with a new power that a character somehow just has. It comes off as stupid - like Uncle Grandpa and Clarence (which I used to confuse with Steven Universe).
Sure, "cartoons are for kids" and I shouldn't be concerned about some stupid kids' show. With that being said, I wouldn't let kids watch this shit.

I didn't care for Ben 10, Johnny Test, and Flapjack
I doubt their respective fanbases are as obnoxious and toxic as the fans of Steven Universe, though.

B. The only people who watched those shows were kids and no one talks about them any more.

Re: GamerGate
The last good cartoon network shows IMO (mainline, not adult swim) were Courage The Cowardly Dog and Ed, Edd, and Eddy. The former for its creativity and themes that verged between melancholic and uplifting, and the latter for being more or less the last hoorah for traditional looney tunes style energetic and over the top cartoon violence.
Before all that, I thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Bravo, Dexters Lab, and reruns of classics like Tom and Jerry (a show thats still adorable and watchable for me today). Everything introduced after the above two (Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Codename Kids Next Door, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends) was tripe that couldn't manage to arouse my interest even as a kid. That was more or less when I signed off kids shows and began to more thoroughly embrace adult animated entertainment, though there was a noticeable void in between leaving the former and discovering the latter.
