I've long thought that respect for one's seniors is one of the things Confucianism got right, vs. Western traditional culture's obsession with youth=beauty=virtue. Unless you die that old person is gonna be you some day, and it's gonna be you when you need that respect the most, and when you've put in the most work to earn it. Yeah, notions like filial piety can be abused by parents who just take that as an invitation to walk all over their kids or have their dumb assumptions go unquestioned. But the concept is supposed to rest on a mutual respect for each other, and for social harmony and stability.
I'm certainly no saint, but I do at least attempt to do right by my own folks, if only for the reason SS mentioned; every time I bend over and something doesn't feel quite like it used to I'm reminded that I'm next in line to need the kind of help they need, and will have no right to ask for it from anyone if I wasn't willing to provide it myself when I was able.
As Gandhi is purported to have put it, "I like your Christ very much, but I do not like your Christians, for they are very unlike your Christ."Christ, save me from your fucking followers.
I'll always remember the saying, "I'd rather be old than the alternative."Sengoku Strider wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2023 4:33 pmI've long thought that respect for one's seniors is one of the things Confucianism got right, vs. Western traditional culture's obsession with youth=beauty=virtue. If you take a completely heartless, numbers-driven view of society - which, as capitalism eats itself alive, we're increasingly encouraged to do by its worst actors - old people and children are bad for the economy, since they consume resources and contribute little in return (and, unlike kids, this state of affairs will never change for the elderly as long as they keep living). This is why we had Texas' lieutenant governor saying during Covid that grandparents should be willing to risk dying so the economy could get going again.
Oh, hello there. Yeah, those sure were the days.
Congress is currently working to make such a stance illegal.
It's tiresome just how transparent the whole con is.BulletMagnet wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 10:34 amCongress is currently working to make such a stance illegal.
This is a particularly sore point for me because it recalls the post-9/11 era when criticizing the Bush administration, not only for Iraq but for anything, meant that everyone was free to scream at you about how you "hate freedom" and "want the terrorists to win" and are "giving aid and comfort to the enemy" and, of course, "if you don't like it you can just get out". Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
