Gawker filed for bankruptcy Friday in New York federal court shortly after a lawyer for the gossip website told a Florida judge that it couldn’t afford to pay a $140 million jury award to wrestling legend Hulk Hogan for posting his sex tape online.

The Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing says that Gawker has between 200 and 1,000 creditors, $50 million to $100 million in assets, and $100 million to $500 million in liabilities.

The company says that it will use two loans, one $15 million advance made by Menlo Park, Calif. venture capital firm US VC Partners, and another $7.6 million credit from Silicon Valley Bank, to stay afloat during the proceeding.

The filing also says that Gawker plans to start “the process of marketing and selling assets of the company.”

Ziff Davis, owner of PC Mag, has already put in a bid for between $90 million and $100 million to buy Gawker, according to a source. Proceeds from any sale of Gawker would be put into escrow pending the site’s appeal of the Hogan verdict, the source said.

If Gawker wins the appeal it will recoup the sale money, otherwise the funds will be handed over to Hogan.

Gawker’s largest creditor is the WWE champ, followed by the law firm Morrison Cohen LLP, to which it owes $115,000 in legal fees.

The website owes Hogan $130 million while Denton is personally on the hook for $10 million in punitive damages.

In a Pinellas County, Fla. courtroom Friday Gawker Lawyer Michael Berry told Judge Pamela Campbell that the $140 million jury award would mean “certain financial ruin” for the website.

Judge Campbell agreed to a temporary stay of the judgment after Gawker founder Nick Denton pledged to post nearly $50 million worth of shares in his company. Florida state law requires a minimum $50 million bond to appeal the jury award.

Gawker’s other creditors include an $82,000 debt to the risk strategy company DeWitt Stern Group and $67,000 to Google.
So happy this is the outcome!

A lot. GG cost them 7 figures, a year or so ago.
We were sending e-mails to their advertisers. This was basically because of owning Kotaku though.

However, I feel that things are so bad right now. I have never seen so much censorship, since the 90s. It's like the publishers have their fingers in their ears, when it comes to gamers. Unfortunately, the think that the press is the voice of gamers. Maybe they should listen to Eric Kain, instead of Kotaku.

Kotaku is shit and Gawker has done some pretty questionable stuff but having a Trump-supporting self-hating homosexual bankrupt a media organizations from the shadows shouldn't be celebrated IMO. Weaponized litigation, not sure that's going to be a good thing for society...

Gawker wouldn't be under, if they hadn't done anything wrong. They would try to destroy lives. I don't think what happened to them, will happen to anyone else who hasn't done shit as wonky as they have.

So, I don't think it will be a "dangerous trend", is what I'm saying.

"a chilling effect is the inhibition or discouragement of the legitimate exercise of natural and legal rights by the threat of legal sanction"

Thiel spent 10 million USD funding lawsuits against Gawker. He's likely bankrolled the con artist Shiva Ayyadurai's suit as well. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016 ... ibel-suit/

There's dozens of thin-skinned silicon valley billionaires where that came from (and remember Thiel sits on Facebook's board). 10 million is small change for them. Don't think for an instant that another one of them won't pursue the same strategy if they don't like what a particular outlet writes about them.

How about Google's Eric Schmidt? He calls Snowden a traitor and says that anyone nervous about the NSA's surveillance programs are just criminals with things to hide. What happens when Vice, Vox, Breitbart, or whoever reports on his Burning Man misadventures? Do you really think Thiel's campaign of "deterrence" won't set a precedent?

Is reporting like this not in the public interest?
http://gizmodo.com/former-facebook-work ... 1775461006

The elites in Silicon Valley want to monetize away our privacy while silencing media orgs that hold them accountable. If you want to dance in the streets just because Steven Totilo will have to look for a new job then go right ahead, but let's stop and see some of the forrest for the trees

"Gawker could continue to fight the Hogan case; it could even win that case outright, on appeal. But even if Hogan went away, Thiel would not. Thiel’s lawsuits would not end, and Thiel’s pockets are deeper than Denton’s. Gawker’s future is indeed grim: it can’t afford to fight an indefinite number of lawsuits, since fighting even frivolous suits is an expensive game."

Speaking of games ruined by SJWs, I recently picked up the Shadowgate remake off the GOG sale.
Spoiler
There's a part in the original Shadowgate where at the top of the tower you find a sexy chick chained up and begging for you to help her, only to turn into a werewolf and attack when presumably you let your guard down.

Image

In the remake when you find her she's fully clothed and not tied up and makes this big speech about how she's really the general in charge of the armies of evil and totally empowered and would never allow herself to be put in the demeaning position of being chained up in service of an ambush. Then she turns into a werewolf and you kill her. Girl power?

Image

Uninstall.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I can't believe this fucking upjumped bunfight of a fiasco cost us my old ideological foe and later on/off bromance Drum. Whenever I stumble over a somewhat bad but intriguing game and find he'd been posting about it years back, I feel regret I'll never be able to discuss it with him. (Mach Rider is kinda cool) You were right about algorithms Drum - they are important, and precious.

God rest he soul. '-'

I also can't believe I was even joking around about Revolution 60 being out by now. All mirth has been extinguished by the shameless ignoring of deadlines. Now, just like Wuwu, I am the mere shell of a man... nothing more than a shitposting machine. I am become unto a LION OF SHIT roaming about seeking to devour whomever I - oh what's this

Zoestorm Redux Episode VI:

Treehouse poking at Watergate results in mass outrage as everyone derides Nintendo for being inconsiderate misogynists on top of giving in to terrorist demands and firing an innocent women. (Even though most of the Treehouse staff seems to be anti-harassment, ironically)
TorrentialDownpour didn't elicit any kind of response from Nintendo, but I bet the lamenting of everyone in the blogosphere somehow will. Maybe Treehouse will for once explain their process of localization and stop being so damn opaque.

He's not wrong though - countless bodies lie strewn about in the Race War Van's wake. I wonder which will see the light of day first, Revolution 60: SPED or Rebel Game Jam? It can't be easy, being held back from one's work by the looming threat of assassination via parkour ninja squad.

Being totally detached here (hilariously OTT shit will continue to spew whatever the intent, and all parties involved can vanish for all I care) - I don't think it's too exotic a reference. X-"gate" jokes have been easy Western pop cultural fare since forever. Cliche and dated, sure. But ever since Mario Sunshine pooted that musty daytime courtroom drama sendup directly into my appalled face in 2002, hackneyed cultural references from Nintendo don't surprise me. Sadly.

Someone looked at the script and saw five Toads (Five Fungi, Five Fun Guys, GEDDIT?) at which point they really, REALLY couldn't help themselves making it even worse.

Not really, I remember the first two PM's for N64 having a lot of fairly intellectual humour aimed at adults. Always made me smile when I caught something I knew wasn't intended for the average kid. That's part of what made those games so great, the writing was clever.

That said, I don't actually understand the furore here. This guy is claiming Nintendo referenced his suffering? Over what specific event? Someone fill in the blanks for me!

The Five Guys in Paper Mario would refer to the five guys the 'guy' in question has slept with for alleged media coverage and a career boost, which is the spark that ignited GamerGate, the consumer revolt which terrorized the social lives of many innocent female game developers for the sake of ethical journalism, and caused the 'guy' in question lots of suffering and pain.

Even though the full scene looks more like a Watergate reference to anything, recent events and the general social justice nature of Nintendo Treehouse would make it seem easy to conclude that they intended the scene to be a jab at GamerGate, among which Victim Numero Uno Zoe Quinn as is shown in the aforementioned picture, who got seriously upset. This prompted the entire social justice side of Twitter to be mean against Nintendo, and articles will be following soon if they haven't already. It doesn't help either that they all still believe Nintendo fired Rapp because they caved to GG demands, even though Treehouse seems eager to support social justice, but can't explain themselves due company regulations.

Oh it's about the Quinnspiracy. I thought it was a guy in the twitter pic.

So basically they were trying to be smart and send up Gamergate, but instead the SJWs are so dumb they misread it as a further attack.

They'll do anything for fuel, those guys. :)

Edit: no, it's just about Watergate.

Here's the actual scene.

Are they joking about Gamergate? Watergate? If only we had stopped the dumb meme of sticking -gate at the end of every scandal name; it made sense exactly once.

Holy shit. I didn't know "gamergate" was a real thing and after reading how the Angry Video Game Nerd became a target of these "social justice" losers, I've come to the conclusion that they're not gamers, nor do they enjoy gaming, and they're just looking for excuses to get offended because they're boring people with nothing else to do, except argue about everything that offends them. It sucks that they had to latch on to video games and gamers to harass.
