im trying to get this running on a 360 in TATE on PVM 20L5 but i cant get it to not be super zoomed in (and cropped) and ugly. is that just how this game is?

there's a thread somewhere on this forum to get it running just fine in TATE mode (my search fu is lacking today sorry).
I can't remember if it has something to do with setting your xbox display resolution as well (located in settings meu).

Try this:

Go to Settings → System Settings and switch Wide Mode to OFF
Go back to Screen Settings → desired game mode → Extra Display → Preset 5 and push button A
Go to Game Window, push button A again and adjust the zoom as you wish

The ideal setting for my TV was 1,76.

Guwange settings are truly the worst.

Despite various complaints from people over the years, the only STG on 360 that I can't get perfect in tate on a 4:3 CRT is Raiden IV, and that's mostly only noticeable because you can't disable or dim the wallpaper.

Some of them do indeed have some pretty silly/convoluted menu interfaces, with Guwange being one of them.
