Whoah.
First off, and I don't mean anything negative in saying this, if you don't go to Roger's seminar for any other reason than a catastrophic act of god you are a great big dummy. Don't worry man. He knows that there will be mostly BJJ white belts there. So whatever your experience level is with BJJ, you will definitely take away something new and useful. Roger is probably the greatest heavyweight in BJJ with a gi on. No gi, he's not the very very best, but still a monster. If he was going to be within 500 miles of my house, I'd go. For sure. I say this with such conviction because we've been lucky enough to have several seminars by GB black belts in the past couple years. Even though we have three resident GB black belts, these seminar guys always have something different to show. Everybody has different styles and different "go-to moves" for any position. Only through being exposed to everything can we know what works best. Dang, I hope we can get Roger to come to our place some day.
I haven't heard of Bob Breen, probably because I got into these things through watching UFC and Pride FC. I know little about martial arts, but I know Inosanto is (was?) the man. Your school sounds very interesting what with "live stand up" and all. I have honestly never seen a martial arts school in the USA that trains randori style like that. I hear rumor that there are some Kung Fu schools in Chinatown that like to get down and dirty but I haven't visited them myself.
I hear ya about the weight. I have a tournament on Dec 10th and am in full on diet mode trying to make 197 pounds. I don't want to be in 198-211 and have to fight six matches or some crazy shit like that. Above 211 is wide open. Last tourney there was a guy weighed almost 400 in that category. Um... Fuck that!. I know you're in great shape so those last few kilos might have to be sweated off in the sauna or something. Fortunately, I can pretty easily manipulate my weight through diet (I carry a wee bit of fat on me most of the time) and haven't had to use the dreaded sauna. If things go well at 197 and I can maintain that weight, I may try for 184 at the next one.
A question: When you mention chokes from the guard, I wonder will people be wearing the gi? Or do you mean triangle chokes?
At any rate. I wish you all the best and please keep us posted. If you do go to Rgoer's seminar, please take pix!
