There is an auto-fire option in the original mode of Fantasy Zone. I have not unlocked any of the other modes yet but I assume it should transfer over. It is activated by holding the R trigger. I would need to play with the options a bit more to find if you can customize the fire rate or button configuration. Hope this information helps.

No problem! I double-checked the options and it does look like the auto-fire rate can be adjusted as well as the button placement.

I am having fun with 3D Out Run. It is taking some time to adjust to the controls. The gameplay is very smooth. I like the new music tracks that are available. This game will be occupying my time for now. :D

Ugh, this finally comes out and I'm 30 hrs into Bravely Default and don't want to put it aside until I'm done.

Gotta say though, having a blast with Bravely Default. Haven't put this much time into a game in years.

Thinking I'm gonna jump into Chrono Trigger DS next.

Ended up getting Space Harrier and Shinobi III. Never really played Space Harrier before but tried it today and it's pretty legit.

I'm really liking these ports so far. Got Outrun and liked it so well that I got the other super scaler games. They really do look striking in 3D. They pop nicely. They don't seem to bother my eyes like most of the 3ds games do. Bought Shinobi III also. While It's a great port and looks nice too, it's just not as impressive as the super scaler games. Still, really nice ports. I'll probably end up getting all of them except for Ecco.

Does anyone know if there's a trick to managing fuel in Galaxy Force II? I can't even manage to last two whole stages, like yesterday I started from Scene A and only got to somewhere in Scene B although I were hit only once. :?

-hit multiple enemies at once, you get more energy.

-always move at maximum speed, only slow down for tight turns.

-some of the reactors have bonus targets alongside them (for example, the fire planet reactor has two ships laying on the ground just before it). Destroying those give a decent amount of energy.

-don't get hit.

That's pretty much it. I made it midway through the final stage a bunch of times, but that is in emulation with a joystick+throttle set-up. It's not an easy game.

Does anyone know or recall if it was possible to buy more fuel (insert coin) in the original arcade game? In that regard, where there continues, and if so at checkpoints or just at stage beginnings?

I'm pretty sure it was like Space Harrier and other Sega games of similar vintage, adding a coin just increased your amount of lives/HP, there weren't even continues.

Thanks for the tips apatheticTurd :)

I didn't even know that you can control your flight speed in this game. Just knowing this will surely help.

Really? The 3DS port of Space Harrier has a continue system iirc. I never would have thought that to be an addition that wasn't in the arcade game.

Now that I think about it, Space Harrier might've also had continues. I know it definitely automatically eats your coin and gives more lives though.

Sega of America announced they're bringing over the second retail compilation, as "Sega 3D Classics Collection". It'll be released on April 28 for $30 and contains the following games:

3D Altered Beast (MD)
3D Fantasy Zone II DX (port of M2's Systsem-16c "remake" of FZII)
3D Galaxy Force II (port of M2's PS2 remaster, includes arcade-accurate mode as an unlockable)
3D Sonic the Hedgehog (MD)
3D Thunder Blade (AC)

3D Power Drift (AC, compilation-exclusive)
3D Puyo Puyo Tsu (AC, compilation-exclusive, untranslated)

3D Fantasy Zone II (SMS, compilation-exclusive)
3D Maze Walker (SMS, compilation-exclusive)

There are some little enhancements and touch-ups for a few of the previously-released games: Sonic/Altered Beast have newer sound drivers, and I believe FZIIDX was tweaked to address some scoring/counter-stop issues in the Link Loop Land game.

The JP version of this compilation also included 3D Fantasy Zone SMS as a bonus for people who owned both compilations, but Sega America has said nothing about this extra, so it's either not there or is being sealed away in the event that they end up bringing over the other compilation.

I was hoping they would combine both for the US, but at least they chose the compilation with the better exclusives for the west. I'll probably pick it up for Power Drift and having some of the better games in the 3D series on cart.

I thought I read Puyo Puyo Tsuu was the MD version? Not that it matters too much since they are nearly identical. I wouldn't mind having the MD/AC version on the go.

edit: I hope the port of Fantasy Zone 1 is unlockable in some way for the US. Telling from the website, it has FM sound added to it. The original cart didn't have FM sound. Looks like both SMS games also add the option for an enemy meter on the bottom of the screen.

edit: Telling from the voice in the video, Puyo Puyo Tsuu seems to be the AC version. Free Play on the bottom right too. Definitely the arcade.

edit: oops, copy and pasted the wrong site by mistake (an image of IDW TMNT comics with Bebop and Rocksteady). Fixed.

Yes, 3D FZ SMS has FM music; they ripped the driver from FZII and hacked it into FZ, and the FM arrangements are all-new and not straight conversions from PSG like a lot of SMS FM music. It should work on real hardware, assuming the ROM is ever dumped.

Sweet. I read in an interview that the new music M2 did for Outrun 3D (arcade port, not the SMS version) was done with the game engine and works on real hardware. Outrun 3D 3D Classics is good stuff. I love the new music and how it transitions similar to the original music.

One game that really surprised me with the FM is Maze Hunter 3D (which is in this collection). It sounds much better than the PSG, like the difference between Phantasy Star with and without FM. I haven't seen what it looks like on 3DS, but the original SMS game has a surprisingly amazing 3D effect.

So I haven't read the entire thread (and not at home to check on the 3ds) but the 3D Classics aren't available here in Europe?

Or is your comment directed towards the upcoming physical release? I'm a bit out of the loop about this but I would sure love to get in on it

Physical release. I want that Power Drift!

Currently the collection has only been announced for NA.

The physical release hasn't been announced for EU and a few of the games on the cart (Power Drift, Puyo, FZ SMS, Maze Walker) are exclusive to the compilation.

Odd how they are using the Maze Walker name when it was called Maze Hunter 3D in the west. Knowing M2, it will probably still have the US/EU version included. It does play as Maze Walker when played on a Japanese system.

It doesn't. The producer said the data layout in the EN ROM is just different enough to the JP ROM to require a separate stereo-3D conversion, even though the game itself is basically identical, so they're not doing it.

Thanks for the info. I may be remembering incorrectly about it playing as Maze Walker on the JP system, though I know for sure it plays the FM sound. If that is the case, it's probably one of those two different roms on the cart things like with Zaxxon 3D where both versions are on cart, but are not quite the same (JP version lacks the ability to turn off 3D mode).

edit: Checked. Plays as Maze Hunter 3D on the JP SMS, but does have FM sound. It does show the Mark III splash screen when played on a JP system, though.

So, I just pulled the trigger on Gunstar Heroes and Galaxy Force II on the eshop. Downloading as we speak but I'm very much looking forward to playing these games for what amounts to the first time

Thanks to whoever linked to the Sega Blog and the conversion interviews, very interesting stuff!

I just bought After Burner II. This doesn't seem to be my kind of game at all. Guess I should have bought Gunstar Heroes instead.

I kinda felt the same sort of regret when I first played 3D Afterburner II.
However, the Special mode is much more fun and in my opinion completely redeemed the purchase. I advise you to abuse credit-feeding and stage select to reach the Arcade mode's ending and unlock Special mode.
It is not perfect, as the enjoyable bonus rounds were replaced by awful dogfight segments against an invicible enemy, but it is overall better.

I have all of the ones on the eShop except for Ecco and Altered Beast. My favorites are the Fantasy Zones, Outrun, Space Harrier, and Galaxy Force. I still might get Altered Beast, but I'll probably just wait for the collection. It's not my favorite SEGA game, but I still like it quite a bit.

I actually prefer classic ABII over the new mode. The new mode is kind of fun, but it's pretty much Climax lite.

That mode unfortunately also didn't do it for me. The game totally kicked my ass, and I didn't like the presentation and gameplay nearly enough to bother getting better at it.
