Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
From what I understand, it has only ever been released in the US as the DS version (subsequently ported to the iPad etc) - which was a fantastic way to play the game.
So I'd hope that this "update" is not just a straight up port. Maybe SE has a bunch of new devs and artists, and they want to give the new guys something to sink their teeth into!

If there are any hardcore Final Fantasy fans left after XIII, then OUYA just ensured a few sales (that is if this isn't just an upscaled ipad port)

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
At this point, I'll be surprised if the thing even gets produced. It will likely implode and bring Kickstarter down with it.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
I see this as meeting the same fate as the Chumby--a cute networked alarm clock of sorts, intended as a bedside news reader/Youtube player/weather report checker, whose designers failed to realize that it didn't offer anything new or provide consumers with something more convenient than their phones. It was underpowered and suffered from a lack of support, two problems the Ouya must also confront.
Console fans already own a proper console. Indie gaming fans already own a PC. Fans of casual mobile gaming already own a tablet or smartphone, and you can find physical controls for those. It has nothing to offer to anyone besides hackers, but it doesn't even have the power to serve as a decent emulation box.
I am surprised that Squeenix is giving a hackable DRM-free system the time of day, but there's no way FF3 is going to be anything other than a port of the iPad version. You'll never see an original game for the Ouya from them.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
I am as close to a hardcore FF fan as I think is still plausible in AD 2012, and as far as I'm concerned FFIII is the worst of the series that they could possibly choose. Thematically it had a few firsts (most notably the job system) and a role in establishing some series mainstays (e.g. the concept of a light-dark balance that ends up being particularly echoed in FFIV), but it's easily the most tedious of the classic FF games, and lacks the historical significance of FFI or FFII (the latter being the first FF where the player characters were actual characters with some kind of distinct identity, a concept that FFIII mostly abandoned). If Square-Enix actually gave half a shit about the platform they'd have ported FFIV.Friendly wrote:If there are any hardcore Final Fantasy fans left after XIII, then OUYA just ensured a few sales (that is if this isn't just an upscaled ipad port)

Sounds like the D-Pad may get fixed.

TomJulieUhrman wrote:They are aware of the D-pad issue
Yes, we heard the feedback on the circular d-pad. this is why it's great to include the community. We're looking at it again with Yves and team. Stay Tuned.
ALSO, this is my last question...sorry...lots of work to do
THANKS REDDIT! THIS WAS AWESOME!

Yeah, there were tons of comments by people who asked them to use a d-pad like the one of Sega Saturn. If they use a similar design, then all is well.
They listened to the suggestions about the design of the buttons, too:

46,000 sold. 2 days left to pledge of cancel your pledge.
Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
Out of curiosity, what is update 10? Says you have to be a backer to read it. Maybe info on how to reserve the username or confirming console choices?

It wasn't much more than a long-winded thank you.
Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
They just announced that XBMC will be ported to OUYA. So if nothing else, it will be a pretty nifty media player.

Looks like they've got a bit of a surge in funding at the end.

ffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuu i'm really struggling to resist this. Seems like a pretty awesome little box for $99.
If my TV had HDMI input, this would be a slam dunk.
Are they going to be more expensive to buy after the launch?

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
They claim it will still be $99 after going retail.

I didn't realize OUYA was that small. Looks like it's about the size of a fist. I bet GaijinPunch could use it for his leisure activities.

Hmm, wonder what kind of case mods would be cool with that. Rubiks cube? Borg mothership? Portal companion cube? Hellraiser puzzle box?Friendly wrote:I didn't realize OUYA was that small.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
It's getting a real push now, 53,000 sold. The $699 developer special sold out a minute ago.
Namco-Bandai just announced that they will be supporting OUYA with their core franchises.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console
So many "Now we're supporting this other thing that isn't directly related to games"-type of news on it lately, it's nice to see the gaming part isn't forgotten. Though I fear Namco Bandai will release the standard Namco compilation with Pac-Man, Rally-X, Galaga, Bosconian, Mappy and Xevious on it like they have for every other system in existence.DJ Incompetent wrote:They just announced Plex support, 4player support, and NamcoBandai are gonna put stuff out on it.

But if there's Ridge Racer OUYA, that'd be awesome.

It's probably going to be Pac-Man CE, they already put that on the Roku (a Netflix/streaming media box).Though I fear Namco Bandai will release the standard Namco compilation with Pac-Man, Rally-X, Galaga, Bosconian, Mappy and Xevious on it like they have for every other system in existence.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console - Last D
Here's something to think about: OUYA + Rift
Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console - Last D
$8 Million USD reached.
Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console - Last D
So, $8.59 Million reached (that's 904% of the kickstarter goal), 58,155 OUYA consoles ordered. It should have been over an hour ago, but for some reason it's still climbing. Maybe there were too many simultaneous pledges so the system couldn't keep up.
EDIT:
Final result: 63,416 backers, $8,596,475 USD, 58,221 OUYAs ordered.
By the way, there are currently 8 kickstarters running for games that will be ported to OUYA if sucessfully funded.

Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console 900% Fun
In case anyone cares, the official website was just launched: www.ouya.tv
You can also pre-order OUYA there http://www.ouya.tv/buyouya/ for $99 (+ international shipping), the differnce is that you'll get it one month after those who pledged at the kickstarter (April 2013), you don't get to reserve a user-name and you won't get a founder-emblem next to your username.

So, have those of you who pre-ordered an Ouya console via the kickstarter submitted a username? The deadline ends in a day.
Re: OUYA - $99 USD Android-Based Video Game Console 900% Fun
I haven't really followed the project, but is there anything about the hardware that makes it fundamentally different from a more-or-less standard Android device that happens to have Tegra 3 and costs $100? I would think any major name developer support as just making whatever they have already been doing for Google Play.
I just got a new phone today too, granted the A9 + SGX540 is considerably weaker than Tegra 3, but it can do HDMI output via MHL and connect to a DualShock 3. I have yet to try it with PS1, but I would only use this if I'm traveling, and either use real hardware or desktop PC emulation at home unless Ouya has something really exclusive that isn't ported from somewhere else.
I guess the major selling point is just game distribution then?
There had better not be any input lag either. Once I'm done getting all my old apps installed on my new phone, I will try it out with a DS3, but I just know action games were unplayably laggy on my Xperia Play both with the built-in keyboard and with a DS3. Don't know if it was just (every) emulator I tried, or if it's a problem with Android's hardware key protocols.
