I play for score more than survival because I suck too bad to ever clear anything anyway.
I'm not sure if this makes sense or not.
What type of shmupper are you?

I'm a score player most of the time, understanding and learning how to manipulate the scoring system in shmups is one of the more interesting aspects of the genre for me. I especially love the medalling in Garegga and bullet scratching in Raiden. I find that focusing on survival, instead of score, causes me to die more often even though the two really go hand in hand. This is how I play when I play for real, but most of the time I'm just playing for my enjoyment at which point you could consider me a credit feeder.
I'm not the best shmupper all around but every now and then I'll find a particular game that I just naturally flow with and I'll fall in love with it. I'll play these until I've mastered them, move on, forget, and return only to master them again. Super Aleste and Viper Phase 1 are a couple I do this with often.
Aside from that alot of shmups have a grand visual appeal for me and I just like testing my reflexes.
