Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
So, is RSG worth the £120 it takes to buy it? My on topic answer was and is no.
I think games are like books are like films. You don't have to get to the end to decide whether you like it or not or whether it was worth the money to buy it.

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
But could you fully appreciate a book/film in a foreign language you're not really fluent in?
Understanding a game's scoring system first is crucial. At least half the fun comes from playing the game properly (=for score).

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
That would certainly be a factor if you played for score but not everyone does. I have never 1cc'd a game but I have loads of the things on my shelf. For me it's more about enjoying the game and surviving. I rarely post in the high score tables for two main reasons: (1) I'm not good enough and (2) I don't want to spend the time required to get good enough (assuming that was indeed possible). Doesn't stop me enjoying a game or deciding one was not worth MY money.Plasmo wrote:But could you fully appreciate a book/film in a foreign language you're not really fluent in?

Or are you saying that "I just don't understand"

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
I'm not saying that you need to get a highscore or 1cc the game in order to enjoy it. It's just that you will get much more out of the game, if you're understanding it's mechanics before you say that the visuals suck or whatever. Reading strategy guides and watching superplays helps immensly to enjoy shmups, even if you don't have any skills / time.
And of course to all people who don't like Radiant Silvergun: You don't understand!

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
I've seen a few thousand movies and average about 150 movies per year nowadays. The answer to that question is a resounding "yes." Dialogue isn't as big a part of the movie experience the way images and sound are, so unless you're watching a Woody Allen or Kevin Smith movie, dialogue is the icing [or superfluous] when it comes to movies. If a shoot-'em-up was ever made into a movie, I really, really doubt it would be dialogue-intensive. Furthermore, you cannot lump movies and books as "book/film" when they're both different mediums of communicating ideas (just as you wouldn't lump sound and taste into the same category)Plasmo wrote:But could you fully appreciate a book/film in a foreign language you're not really fluent in?

By the way, I love Radiant Silvergun without having ever played it - the visuals, the music, the sound fx. Also, I never play a game for score

Hyper Duel. It's a darn good game, but it was way more expensive than it was worth. I don't play it often as, say Futari or something.
Harmful Park too. Same thing. Really good, but I just don't play it as much to warrant the price.
Of course, i'm glad I own both.

Alright, well, looks like I`ll need to go to the arcade then. Gonna have to ask myself if its worth the 100 yen though. I could get a cold beverage for that much!

I'll add a caveat - there were a number of SAT-J shmups I thought were overpriced on first blush: Guardian Force, Battle Garegga and Blast Wind to name a few. The more time I gave them, which was hard at first, the more I liked them. And now Blast Wind and Garegga are in both in my top 10 fav's.
I really need to give Hyperduel some more time before writing it off as overpriced.

MAME 0.128 runs RSG rather well [on a reasonably modern system, I have a 2.1GHz Pentium [one of the semicrippled Core Duo series]]. There are a few extremely noticeable graphics issues later on in the game [one has the background look completely weird, before it jumps back to normal], and until stage 5 kicks in, you shouldn't really get much frameskipping.
Until my processor overheats [yay badly ventilated laptop], it almost never frameskips [until stage 5 again, and I only see that if I creditfeed

0.129 and higher drastically increase system requirements for this game, so use 0.128 [it was like my 2.1GHz machine was now my PIII 850MHz one].
Also, there is likely a massive amount of input lag. I remember someone saying that.
It'll work fine, unless you're on an old Pentum III like I used to have [850MHz], where it ran at 80-90%, frameskip 7 [any higher and it was totally unplayable

Also, I'd never pay more than $40-50 for RSG after having played it, it's totally not worth triple digit prices. Great game though, and reminds me of why I like Treasure games -- the bosses.
I'd play it more, but that means I'd have to reboot into Windows [and I have absolutely no reason to reboot into Windows otherwise], because last Wine update I did made everything slow [getting a frameskip of 4-7] and broke sound, and haven't bothered to compile the native version [every experience with emulation in Linux I've had -- with the exception of Kega Fusion, the Windows version in Wine has been faster/better].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Their almost as bad as ikaruga fanboys. Theirs nothing wrong with the game (I never really liked it though) but its not the single most greatest shmup ever.Illyrian wrote:That's a typical fanboy response right there.Never_Scurred wrote:Plasmo wrote:And of course to all people who don't like Radiant Silvergun: You don't understand!

Thanks for this information- it's really worth knowing and is one of the reasons I love being a member of this forum...as well as all the ridiculous arguments lolnull1024 wrote: I have said this before, but it bears repeating.

Will give 0.128 a go cos I've never played RSG properly before.
Wonder if 0.128 will play G-Stream G2020 smoothly too.
Oh yeah and I can already tell you RSG is definitely worth the money on MAME ( which I guess is the cost of the electricity to run my PC plus the time it takes to download).
As always, thankyou MAME

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
Also worth pointing out that SSF runs it pretty well.

Wotz SSF? I want it...Gus wrote:Also worth pointing out that SSF runs it pretty well.
... and yes RSG is running pretty good on MAME 0.128. Finally I have no more regrets about selling my "region free" Saturn a few years back (got £120= for it too)

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
It's a Saturn emulator though I guess it's pointless if MAME runs it near-perfect. Gonna go try it now.

Basically, it's official, RSG is a terrible game, as voted by the players themselves. I know the number for a good psychologist if you need help dealing with the crushing realisation that you supported a terrible game.

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
i've played maybe 300 hours on silvergun & been playing again recently
a 1cc only takes about 35 minutes with 100% destruction bonuses. some people's runs are longer, but that's gonna be grazing which is pretty minimal point-wise
the level where you chase the boss etc, that's stage 2B btw
i actually think hiroshi iuchi is a genius, no lie

G-Stream runs well in 0.126u5, only that the sound is borked quite nicely. However, it doesn't detract from the fact it's a good game.mjclark wrote:Will give 0.128 a go cos I've never played RSG properly before.

OT: A game that wasn't worth my money - Gaia Seed, so much so that I never bought it but the asking price was always far to high to justify given it had little press or high praise/interest.
I would say for myself Radiant Silvergun was worth the price of admission. It fostered my interest of modern shooting games (not to mention drawing interest to Sega Saturn itself, a system I now hold a lot of respect for, and in addition to import video games which could be to said to me more meaningful) and drew me in on all fronts: game play, graphics, and music. For me it's one of the few complete packages and despite not playing it much these days I think I got my money's worth in the countless hours I spent on it a few years ago so I'm not regret.
If you don't like Radiant Silvergun, congratulations - welcome to the same world of people who do like it, the world where nobody cares. Same goes for Ikaruga. You either eat up the hype and love or hate it or simply decide to play because it looks interesting.
