I was at Gamestop today (had to preorder it eventually, I have a feeling this will be one of those hard to find games) and no demo, but their computer and their paper still say 9/7 as a release date.

Also, wicked cool Gamestop employee sold me another wired Xbox 360 controller on his employee discount, which is always sweet.

I think its funny that I've gone to a few GameStops in the last week or 2 and just asked them if the computer still said the same release date and every time they're like YEAH DO YOU WANT TO PRE-ORDER IT THEN, HUH? and every time, I just say no, I think that's a fake release date GameStop made up since the Japan version isn't even up for pre-orders yet and they either get really sad about it or keep arguing with me about how I should pre-order it anyway.

This game is not coming out this year. I'd say February at the earliest just by the fact that it was 25% done a couple weeks ago, and yeah, no import date even yet. Unless it's coming out in the US first, which would be dumb because otomedius is really popular in Japan.

Seriously, you put tits and ass into a game and the Japanese go mad for it. I finally picked up a copy of the original and it's one seriously lacklustre shmup. Really disappointing from Konami. :?

Don't forget the penguins.

To see how popular it is, look at the "ratings" for it when you're checking out the game info on your Japanese live account. It has more than even deathsmiles.

Those 3 screenshots of X look just like G though, with better looking backgrounds. I hope they don't remove the d-burst aspect, otherwise I probably won't buy if it's just a remixed Gorgeous mode (Gorgeouser mode?). The whole loop aspect made Gorgeous boring after a few play throughs. It's much more fun to have a 3 stage run in arcade mode and just call it a day, and the burst spamming aspect is what gave the game its charm, it would be like taking chaining out of DDP.

And of course you can expect Konami to price gouge on the DLC, hopefully they put everything on the US disc for free cause they know we won't play that shit over here.

This, and Guwange 360 sure are taking a long time to release. Seems like we've known about them for years.

Go play it online, Play Versus Mission a bunch, and experience the feeling of achievement when you unlock some really powerful weapons.

Also, the music packs seriously add to the game. Consider at least picking up the Xexex one if you have some Japanese points.

Esmeralda and Poini Coon are both Gamebreakers, if you want to slide through the game and challenge yourself to make things disappear in record time, try picking up either of them.

for a serious challenge, force yourself to use some of the REALLY useless weapons like Ion Ring.

No, it really is. :)

I'm sure if I dedicated my time to squeezing the game's different modes and challenging myself in a variety of ways, I could say I had attempted to get my moneys worth. But the game genuinely is too bare and lacking to actually bother.

Otomedius was about collecting all the shit on your card at the arcade. The console version is kind of underwhelming because there isn't that same coolness. That's why they made Gorgeous mode, but it's boring.

It is boring if you know how Otomedius is meant to be played (Burst spamming over and over). It's not even the same type of game. Gorgeous mode feels like a Gradius doujin clone with the character skins from Otomedius.

Which is awful, awful bullshit.

Gorgeous Mode suffers from three things:
A: Slow, plodding pace
B: Spartan enemy layout
C: Absurd rank rise from loop to loop

If they can fix those three elements in Excellent, then we should have a decent Gradius clone.

its much easier to ignore that fact if you consider Gorgeous mode to be a completely separate game. In fact, if you look at how Konami is handling Excellent, its like they want everyone to forget the arcade version even existed. (I still haven't forgotten. I own a kit.) Then it becomes a Gradius clone with about the same amount of slowdown as Gradius III.

The rank increase between loops is a bit rough, but otherwise its not much different than the freaking source material.

Yeah I figured as much, we're probably lucky we have a port of the coinop on Gorgeous.

I actually like playing in arcade mode, I sucked ass when I first got it, but I can clear all 3 stages on Hard and have a pretty high rank on the leaderboards. It's fun, and it's different, and I like the fact it's a break from Cave type games.

Gorgeous mode was thrown together IMO, if they can refine X into playing more like a Gradius game (not boring as hell) I will definitely have fun with it. But if it's G-mode with prettier graphics, no chance.

The loop difficulty in G wouldn't get to me so much if you didn't lose all your weapons after a clear, it is brutal to have to powerup again after the second loop, I don't know how those Japanese dudes do it. After I cleared G-mode enough to get all the weapon cards I never went back.

But the bottom line is I'm a fan of the series and I hope they add enough to it and don't go for the cash-in game.

Well we have 3 screenshots and they all show a widescreen game, that screams that they have more or less abandoned Otomedius Arcade. Gorgeous mode can be less brutal if you use the right loadouts on the 2nd loop. Avoid over destroy becomes important, but at the same time, you want to be able to pretty much megacrush the entire screen if you have to. Poini coon comes to mind with Rotation and Auto Aim. She's also a good way to bullshit your way through higher loops. When a player dies in multiplayer their options multiply by the number of active players, and she picks up an option for just 2 power ups.

I'm not sure if I feel like forking out 80$ US for this thing. :?

I don't know about this game... I'm crazy for Shmups but with Daifukkatsu coming on November, and Radirgy Noa now coming soon I think I may just save the $80. The first Otomedius got a "best of" release right? So maybe a year down the line I can just pick the "best of" for this game at like $30.... which is about what it looks to be worth :?

The Japanese retail for this game is obviously insane (which I'm sure will have a level or two withheld for DLC...), just wait for the confirmed US release which will probably be 50 or under.

I have the platinum hits Odomedius, which was 30 bucks, and there is no way in hell I woulda paid 80 dollars for it. It's a good game to fuck around in, but nothing more.

This is going to be fairly standard for quite a while. Its not like companies are asking more yen price for the sale, but the value of the dollar became absolute SHIT in the last few months and the exchange rate makes things ridiculous. If this has any kind of bonuses over the potential US version, I'd get the Japanese one, but with the exchange rates being so bad, I'd rather just hold off if there's nothing exclusive to the JP version.
