I think with 3+ months of practice I'd be able to unlock Kagura, but I'm more concerned about the extras.

it's that damned glorious symbol. I can definately get past it, but it sucks the lives out of me first, and I end up dying on the third stage. I got to the 3rd boss once, though.

like I said: I know I'll unlock kagura eventually, I only asked for the file so I can unlock and view replays of the extras. there are some touhous I've 1cc'd on easy, I only said that to prove a point.

Alright, first of all stay away from the orbs you have to destroy, attack them when they aren't in front of you (remember, there's no collision damage!).

A moment after they start to fire, bomb.
If you are using minogame, use level 2 shot+subweapon when they fire, use bomb the next time and repeat doing so.
If you are using kagura use the bomb you get by holding the bomb button from away, and Aim for the boss's center. Also make use of the luna-consuming attack to cancel bullets!
That should make you effectively invincible through most of it's attacks.
Remember not to bomb when it fires something that's easy to dodge.

For stage 4, try to get as little stella as you can, that way you can skip the boss and unlock kagura which will make things easier.

If you fail that or don't wanna do it, try to survive as much as you can during the level, then when the boss comes destroy one wing (twice!) and cripple the other one (once!) then keep firing at the actual boss. Remember to move above and next to it's head when it starts firing a big beam thingy.

Alternatively destroy both wings and then destroy all but one of the options that it spawns, and stay away from the last one while you destroy the boss.

I've seen enough replays to know how to fight the dragon. speaking of which, I made it to stage 4 for the first time! do you have to 1cc stage 4 or just complete it?

I'd still like to have that file, though.

use minogame, s/he is the easiest to handle... two attacks u should focus on, first is revolving theater hell (red lasers) - this is great for crowd control
second is nirvana vacuum with charge attack - what you do is hold down the charge button, when your sub is at level two, press sub while holding the main, this will launch a circle, when inside this circle and holding down main your invincible, so what you do is, charge main, release nirvana vacuum, get inside it, release main and hold it down back again fast, you will be invincible while doing your charge attack inside the circle and also charging up your main again, great for bosses... use red lasers for long range crowd control and the second for precision high power strikes, let you terra run out by stage 3, that way you can fill up your life on stage 4... and bomb whenever you need to, bombs are rechargeable for a reason...

then unlock kagura and rock out xanthez style...

Edit: just to test my advice out i just tried it... first 3 stages are a breeze and stage 4 till about the end... for stage 4 boss, just make sure to destroy the first form of the wings, the homing lasers from it are a pain... then just sit back and launch the red lasers and if have bomb just bomb...

I just had an epiphany. this isn't really a conventional shmup in that you aren't meant to spam the shoot button for everything most of the time, rather rely on each character's special skills!

using minogame's red lasers, I was able to easily get past stages 1 and 2, but I got pwned on stage 3 and had to use a continue. I got all the way through stage 4 and destroyed one of his wings, and the first form of the other, but I died right before I had the chance to finish him off!

I keep forgetting that this is one of those games where it says "1 life left" but the game is over when you lose it.

There you go, you're getting the hang of it. Each character has their own special abilities that you have to learn to take advantage of given the current situation. I'm pretty good with DeadLiar but I'm terrible with Minogame (which most people regard as the easiest character to use) and I'm even worse with Fossil Maiden.

When you get past stage 4 without using a continue, you can used Kagura Promised Dawn and pretty much do just that; shoot everything for most of the game. It's the closest you'll get to playing this game like a traditional shmup.

I just couldn't clear the game at first with no other char than Fossi Maiden and Karuga Xanthez and those were supossedly the hardest chars/settings to use.

I remember only playing with Minogame, because all the other charaters seemed far too much of a hassle to learn to play, and it didn't even take me a week to clear the entire game with the extras.

I guess it's different from person-to-person then. I've not played it enough to actually clear it, but the furthest I've gotten is with Deadliar (Stage 6 boss, might've been Stage 7 but it didn't unlock so it doesn't show on my stage select presumably because I didn't clear the stage).

I unlocked Kagura a few days ago but here's where it gets weird. somehow I skipped over the rusted dragon completely! It sure saved me alot, but the damn perpetual calander took the rest of my lives plus my continue.

And just after the stage 4 you went to the shrine of farewell, right?

if it was like that then what happened was that you ran out of Terra before the Rusty Dragon fight. The game skips the fight if that happens.

Anyway, congrats on unlocking Kagura. If you still want to play HELLSINKER as a traditional Shmup pick Kagura - Infernal Sabath... it's practically like any shot.

actually, no. I didn't. I went to stage 5. although I have the shrine unlocked in the mission select area.

As far as I know, only the very latest version allows using Shift. However, that version is not compatible with the English patch, as it would have taken a lot of work to re-find all of the in-game strings and make sure nothing was wrong. Considering they had already done that once for a previous update, and that all that patch did was fix a glitch that the English patch already fixed and allow Shift (and I think Enter) to be used, I think it may have been reasonably justified to not update the English patch again.

Mauve detailed some of the work involved in making the English patch on this blog post (some spoilers, I believe).

I think fixing that specific thing might not be too troublesome, by backporting the fix itself to the older version, but I have just been way too busy with other things. Also I don't think the interest is there.

Also people think I'm weird because I think Fossil Maiden is the easiest character to play as.

interesting how it skips stage 3 lead if you've continued. I still don't think I'm gonna be able to beat this game.

edit: I still want that unlock, though. there's no way I'm gonna beat the entire game without continuing. or maybe someone can tell me how do find and edit the file myself, idk.

sorry for the double post, but does anyone know how to delay the shrine of farewell? I keep getting it after stage 4. and not being able to continue after that is a pain in the ass.

I'd still like an answer to the above post, as well.

there is something called terra gauge on the left-bottom of the screen
it starts 240 and keeps depleting till it hits 0 at which point you enter the shrine

how to keep it from falling to 0 :-
choose behind stages to lock terra down (what works for me is B-L-B)
point blank enemies to gain terra
dont die
dont let hearts fall through, it reduces terra

for me I get the shrine after stage 5, cause perpetual calendar generally gives me a hard time...
I am still stuck at the apostle twins, somehow cant beat them... practice practice practice...
and dont know which file to edit to unlock...

I swear I'm getting worse at this game.

I'm still hoping someone will help with my request. anyway, as far as the apostles and stage 6, I somehow skipped them the one time I beat the perpetual calender. (choose the luna side, btw. much easier.) I died within the first 5 seconds of stage 7. but that was before I started getting worse and worse. since then I haven't even been able to get to stage 5.

Stages 6 and 7 tend to do that, there is a major difficulty spike which makes you think you're getting worse yourself.

Just practice more, if you make it to stage 6/7 one more time, you unlock them in segment select too!
