Re: What are your jobs?
Currently underpaid temp-worker at a small Chicago art museum (Money? Who cares about that?). My boss says I'm on-staff till at most the summer!
Which means I have roughly six months to set myself up for a new job. I've worked from librarian to groundskeeping to security in the past, and now I'm eying my older brother's university for possible future employment, since he's tight with all the big-wig administrators there. My former high-school vice-principal now works across the street from the museum in an administrative building, so I have to rekindle some connections there as well.
EDIT:
I also envy everyone who gets to use headphones during work. That's NEVER been the case anywhere I've worked at, and let me tell you, I sure as hell could have used it in groundskeeping.

Re: What are your jobs?
Right now, I guess no job. Unless you can count running an electronic netlabel that makes enough money to support itself. That and trying to be an artist. We'll see how that goes. Not even a week since my first Cd release. Though I have 2 friends who make enough from their music to live off it.

Try to get a job with a franchised store as they pay better, and generally have better staff as a consequence too.railslave wrote:Skykid wrote:Be warned, the wage is bare minimum in there. That's what happens when supply outstrips demand in the labour force. Might as well go work for a sweatshop, or McDonalds.Skykid wrote:Be warned, the wage is bare minimum in there. I know electronic gaming stores are incredibly popular, and think CEX stores get bombarded with around 50 applications per day, and those are the "shitty" ones outside City Centres.

I'm Key account manager in an IT services company.
My client is the public healthcare system of France....or was until I was ditched last week due to my being chosen as the scapegoat of the year.
It's basically a complete brainwashing experience. Now I understand much of the politics inside a huge organization. This occasionnaly makes me want to toss everything away. Also constently makes me feel like a retard for trying to make things work properly, when every succesfull individual in this area focuses its attention on how they 'should have been', or why things are catastrophic for very good reasons.
I save my (engineer) soul practicing electronics and software engineering in my free time, which is practically forbidden in my current working position.

Ha ha awesome. Well 5 years on I'm apparently living my dream, sort of. Teaching A Level Media Studies, but also at GCSE level, and teaching year 7-9 Drama. Life is weird.MX7 wrote:It's been my dream for ages to teach film studies, preferably at sixth form level (i've become disillusioned with the way university handles this subject).
I love teaching so much though that i'm pretty flexible. I used to tech a year 8 class English as a teaching assistant, which was amazing.
At the moment i'm relishing my last summer as a 'child' before going back to uni for 3rd year and cracking on with my dissertation.

To state the obvious: shmups are old school. I'm old enough to remember when Space Invaders first emerged in the States. So it's not that surprising that plenty of us are no longer students.DMC wrote:Phd student in psychology. Two years left. I thought there would be mostly students here.
Re: What are your jobs?
I thought a lot of people would have a span of say three or four years when they are really into the genre and the community before they move on to something else. For, instance, most of the people in the earlier parts of this thread are no longer here. And this forum scarcely talks about 70-80s shooters afaik. I also guess student schedules fit well with playing these kind of games, and perhaps also trait characteristics are common between the two. But maybe I weight in the hi score section too much.

Re: What are your jobs?
Yeah, this might apply to another genre of gaming that is still alive and well, but not to a particularly "retro" genre. Seems like the average age is mid-20s to mid-30s for the most part. Golden age shmups probably aren't talked about as much because most don't have the same depth and appeal of later age shmups. I love Galaga, River Raid, Gorf, you name it, but there is much more variation in gameplay in early 90s shmups.DMC wrote:I thought a lot of people would have a span of say three or four years when they are really into the genre and the community before they move on to something else. Re: What are your jobs?
I've been in different realms of telecom or data infrastructure mostly. I work for a small engineering/consulting firm that's all virtual, no offices or such. I mostly do engineering and/or project management work, but since we're small also get involved with bids/proposals and such occasionally.
I used to engineer central telephone offices for the larger LECs (AT&T/Southwestern Bell, US West, etc). That was class 5 circuit switched stuff, and deal with some of that but more often VoIP applications nowadays.
