Is that a Marshall 18 watt clone you were using that minimass with?

I tried my minimass out with my father's old Fender last weekend and was happy. It sort of sounded like there was a blanket over the amp, thoe.

Good eye. Yeah, that was a Weber TMB 18w. Had some issues with it, so I'm replacing it with a prebuilt amp from Ceriatone.

The Mass attenuators are great for shaving off a little volume but they suck for low-level playing if you want power tube distortion. So they reduce volume and give you great tone but you still have to crank the amp. I sold my Mini after I realized that. :P

Thanks! It's a modded-to-hell MIM. Not the best player around, but it's a great sounding guitar.

i need to ask you guys a bit of advise if anyone knows anything about recording music onto a laptop.

basically, there's a guitarist on youtube jy the name of jun626 who plays amazing cover versions of zeppelin tunes note-for-note (including many live songs, and bbc sessions, etc etc). and there's also an american guy who plays drums and does many zep songs note-for-note. anyways, these two dudes have eventually discovered each other through the wonder of the interweb and started doing videos integrating both their performances. but they don't have a bass-player yet. so i wanna get in on this shit, cos i love zep, and i'm quite good :P obviously i need a webcam, but what about the audio? how do i record, what sort of software do you need, and how much should i budget for?

any and all help is appreciated :)

What kind of computer are you using? If you have a fairly recent machine, you should be fine without any upgrades or additional interfaces. Bonus points if you use a Mac -- they're great for recording. As for video and Youtube, I'm not quite sure. Most camcorders and webcams compress and distort signals unless you really know how to mix levels and that sort of thing. If you just wanted to record, there are some great free programs you can use, like Audacity (what I use) and Kristal. All you'll need is a mic and possibly a mic stand; then you can mic up your cabinet or whatever to your computer and record direct. Again, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to video, but I bet there are some great free editors out there somewhere. Hope this helps. :)

I use a laptop too. They aren't powerhouses for the most part, but you can cut some good-sounding stuff. Try to find a cheap mic with an 1/8" plug and plug it into the mic input of your soundcard, if it has one. Then you can fool around and get used to recording. If you get a webcam, it's mostly just plug and play.

For some mics, maybe. You should be able to find a few mics with 1/4" jacks. If you laptop has a headphone jack, it should have a mic or aux in jack too.

It's a damn work of art on the inside.

I'll try to get a full family shot once I get the pedalboard put together.

nice amp!

my teisco sg is dying. I don't want to have to setup every few months, and don't want to pay for new frets so I'm looking at a new guitar.

Am I crazy for liking the fender musicmaster II? I was thinking of getting one off of ebay since the one at Tom Lee music is priced at $900.

I've also been looking at the jazzmaster reissues.

there there's this guy on craigslist...

Thanks.

I think I'd take a jazzy over a jag, but that's just personal preference.

As for the Fernandez...those are awesome guitars, but man, the prices have really shot up.

I'd go for a Mustang over a Musicmaster, because of the body carving and 6-saddle bridge. It must be hard getting the intonation right with only 3 saddles.

The Jazzmaster reissues are good, you'll just have to replace the bridge straightaway or else deal with strings slipping

P.S. - nice amp. What attenuator will you use with it?

come to think of it, I was never a fan of the short scale on the mustang family...

I've decided to go with a reissue Jazzmaster, probably in black. Know any good places to purchase from? musician's friend has it listed at $1500.00 O_o

and are you talking about my Traynor? What's an attenuator? I tried reading the wiki article but I still don't understand =/

The attenuator thing was direkted at Square King. I would recommend a Japanese Jazz for like half that, but Fender of Japan won't allow overseas sales anymore, so you'd better check ebay if you go that route

+1 on the CIJ Jazzmasters, if you can find one.

I don't think I'll use an attenuator with this one. The 1/2-power switch should bring me ~15w, which is still plenty loud but manageable.

looking at This

any major diffs between MIJ and CIJ models? This local seller seems to offer a good deal though I'll probably get it repainted and with new pickguard.

Kingbuzzo, have you done much Craigslisting? Here's a couple of sweet Tokais:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/msg/599605454.html

http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/msg/598001126.html

And a standard:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/598671418.html

Yeah I know you're in Vanland but surely Seattle isn't too far to go for a sweet ax.

I've gotten a couple of new amps recently. I don;t have time to dig up the pic of the one but the other is in that pride and joy thread.

PS: Square KIng, that JTM is dynamite. If I knew you IRL I'd slap you high fives all day long over that.

Neon, to answer your question from the other day, the footswitch on the Legend is a channel switcher. I haven't messed with it at all. That was just my muff in that pic. That amp is bizarre.

And before I talk about the Orange I want to mention my new business idea. It's half baked. JUST LIKE ME!!! Anyhow, I have collectoritis. It plagues my character and I can't help it. I have collections of collections. So all my friends thought I'd become a guitar fiend but no, I am an amplifier/pedal fiend. So one day I was thinking I should just go ahead and spend all monies on amps and then rent them out to bands to record at a couple of different studios where I know the engineers. My first thought after thinking that last one was "you are BAKED man, lay off the grass and get a job or something and quit with all these "ideas" you're always having". And so I did. But the very next night I went to a show and this guitar player came up to me and said "I heard you have a Soldano! Can I rent that thing in April to do my next record?" Fuckin A, yes. So now I have a business! Or I will next month anyway. Since then I have gotten alot of (mostly moral) support from the two main studios I had in mind when this scheme was born and most importantly the Grza has got my back. In fact he wants nothing more than to build custom and kit amps and his own pedals.

SO, I recently picked up a VT-22:

Image

It's totally radical but I keep it upstairs so it will never see anywhere close to full volume until somebody rents it or I get motivated to drag it over to Big Sound and blast it a little. I never ever play with clean tones or reverb but since I can't really turn it up that's exactly what I do with this amp. It's effing beautiful. To bad I don't know any twangy songs. Oh yeah, loudest amp in the known universe. Srsly. It'll blow a JCM 800 or that Orange or whathaveyou straight out of the fucking water.

Then the Orange OR120 and the Marshall 4x12:

Image

The OR is a 90s reissue. So what though. I made the guy take the whole thing apart and it is exactly the fucking same as an oldie but it has a three prong power receptacle like modern electronics should instead of a wire hanging out the back. The reason I made him take it apart was that the power receptacle was loose and the screws wouldn't tighten. It should be worth noting that he had already seen the wad of cash in my hand. So when we got it apart *HOLD THE PHONE* I noticed that one of the loose screws was NOT ORIGINAL!!! Call the amp cops! So I used that as an opportunity to launch a ruthless campaign of hemming and hawing. "Aw man now I'm tripping out a little. Sorry for being so weird. It's just when I spend that kind of money I need it to be perfect. Maybe I should shop around. I mean I just don't know. It sounds nice and everything but maybe I should sleep on it." Ya know, a bunch of weak shit so that he'd talk himself down. He did and I left with the amp. So I went over to good ol' Big Sound to hook it up to something epic and this feller who had just bought himself a VT-22 was there. He said I could have the Marshall for $150. So now I got a halfstack. BTW, the thing is absolutely everything I want in an amplifier. If you've heard "In Search Of..." by Fu Manchu you know exactly how I want guitars to sound when played by me and I got that. I plug in directly, turn the gain all the way to the right and get exactly the sound I want. It's really amazing.

I was also recently given some turd called a "Bassman 60". It need not be photographed or talked about.

Awesome awesome awesome.

Since the JTM45 is only 30 watts, the minimass should be able to handle it, meaning I need to hit up youtube and compare it with the 18 watter. So many sweet amps, so few monies

I've always heard that the tube rectified 45s are around 30w and the solid state rect 45s are more around 40-50w.

Well god bless Craig's List, I have scored some new stuff lately and it is the goods. First off I needed a new speaker for the Lafayette cab and after much shopping around I settled on a nice Chinese greenback for $50. And what the hey, here's a pic:

Image

The Bag End came with it when I got it and sounds great by itself but it's nice having a lower wattage speaker in there with it that breaks up a little more too. It sounded really sweet before but it's even better now.

Then I spotted this little five watt Gibson GA-5 Les Paul Jr Goldtone at a stupid low price. It looks like so:

Image

Elegant and simple. One knob: volume. It's pretty sweet. When I got to the guy;s place he said "try it with this guitar" and busted out this:

Image

Hondo Chiquita Travel Guitar. Fucking awesome. This is the same guitar the one from the beginning of Back to the Future. Anyhow it doesn't sound too awful and is sort of nifty in a novel way. It's destined for the ebay I think. It's only a 19" scale and isn't fun to play for more than two minutes. Here's a size comparison:

Image

So anyhow the Gibson was making this funky ringing noise like some sort of microphonics or something so I tore into it a bit and it was awesome. Pure hand wired goodness and an RCA for the speaker jack. So I whipped me up an RCA<1/4 and plugged it into the Lafayette cab and then the Marshall cab. I think the GA-5 with the Marshall is my new fave practice rig. So much beautiful distortion without offensive volumes. Whatever ringing noise I was hearing must be a result of the speaker shaking things up because when I run it into a cab that noise is gone. I haven't hooked the stock speaker back up yet. Here's a couple of pix:
