Oh, I know the character well, but for some reason, based on how I was reading your post, I believed that you were saying that Captain Caveman had been in GOTGV2, and I never saw anything like that. Could just be that I misread what you said.

I just mentioned him as a comparison since I have a soft spot for not too bright, but likeable characters.

Hell or High Water was great. Very much a slow burn with A+ Jeff Bridges badassery.

Passengers. It was OK. Probably could have had more bite if it'd stuck with the consequences of the core scenario - forcing someone to spend her life with you whether she wants to or not - but I understand putting in the external threat of escalating system failures for the protagonists to overcome.

I have to credit the set designers, they really evoked the feel of a cruise ship in space. The only big omission was that it didn't seem to have a casino deck.

Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Definitely 80's TG and not 70's, but still good. And yes, it's a pretty cool hidden gem. I learned of it when I worked in a video store circa a long fucking time ago. Probably worth a rewatch with the gf.

BTW, your link is busted -- missing the ")" in the tag.

House 4.

Got the boxset from Arrow a few months ago, now watched all 4 movies. Will sell the boxset when they are sold individually. Only house 2 holds interest.

As for parts 3 and 4. Not sure what they were going for. Its diluted, childrens horror at best and its all cliched to the point of expecting things to happen. And then nothing happens. All dreams and out of body experiences. Cannot recommend, but if you want your 80's horror fix go for House 2, Return of the living dead or The people under the stairs.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

It's amazing. It's like The X-Files, Twin Peaks and Terminator had a baby.

STAR WARS DESPECIALIZED

Just wonderful. Makes you wonder why the Special Editions were necessary at all.

I tip my hat to Harmy for his work here. Beautiful stuff.

Elvis & Nixon (2016) - Liza Johnson

Hard one to recommend unless you are interested in the subject matter. "Made for TV", standard film at best. Michael Shannon Takes on the role of Elvis! I like Shannon. He is unique and talented but as Elvis? C'mon now.
I can see what he was after and he performed well but none of Liza Johnson's take on the surreal 1970 visit makes any sense without the other worldly charisma and presence the man himself.
Now, in many respects Mr Presley was an absurd character. He is any easy target and has been the been the butt of countless skits and jokes over the years but I feel its important to point out that he is an easy target at a distance, if you get my meaning.
I only point this out because, even though this film is also billed as comedy, there is definite derisive portrayal of Elvis' hypnotic charm in this film. It came across as childish, almost bitter and to anyone with a brain, obviously untrue. As I said, easy . . . from a distance.

Kevin Spacey as Nixon was, well, Kevin Spacey as Nixon. He is a very capable actor and a celebrated mimic. He didn't even have to try really and I think this ease is one of spacey's weaknesses when seen on screen. You can almost see his aloof boredom in films.

A rambling review. I think that What I'm trying to get across, is that this is a 2016 film. It felt very much like "Elvis viewed from a safe space".
So on the kings rating scale, I would say that Elvis would have shot another TV.

Now watch the Silver Screen edit mostly taken from an actual 35mm print. Same film, worlds apart quality and feel.

Yeah that's really interesting actually, I didn't know movie theatres used to operate like that back then.

It was a nice follow up to tonight's movie too. Really fell in-love with it again, but not just for being Star Wars, but for the impressiveness of the achievement for 77. It was like seeing it in a whole new light: original and untampered with, but in beautiful high definition with perfect colour tone and all the cleanup.

Star Wars really is a landmark in Cinema. The editing was so advanced for its time, it totally revolutionised the way films were paced, and keeps it feeling fresh today. Lucas did a great job battling adversity to see it through, and he had a lot of help from talented people.

Most of all I think about the humanity that makes the characters work. Everyone is slightly flawed, whether naive, selfish or stubborn - but that human element is why it's so much fun.

Then you go and see a Marvel movie.

Way to celebrate it's 40th birthday! This is the only version my kids has seen it along with the Despecialized editions of Empire and Jedi. Yeah, it's quite remarkable to behold...

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) - Chad Stahelski

Rated "R" for retarded.
Unforgivably, irredeemably, grotesquely bad.
If you liked this, more power to you but do not, not for one minute, try to proclaim it of any merit outside of your own subjective bounds of entertainment.

Get out immediately, John Wick 2 was fantastic. Nothing deep, but solidly entertaining and well paced.

Grab that Team Negative1 release of the original star wars. That is a thing to behold! 1080p from a bunch of original reels, a bunch of them faded to an awful Red. Not taking away from harmy, but he currently recommends it over his for the original Star Wars.

Interesting. I liked both, and liked the second more than the first. I found both very entertaining, and the second one to be a better-produced movie, all around.

I'm honestly surprised that you found the second one worse than the first one. I do not see where you can come up with that.

It will be quite a feat if the second is worse than the first. The first was shit.

Same. I didn't see the first one until after the second, and I'm glad I did it in that order since the 2nd is just entirely better and I might've not wanted to see 2 if I'd seen 1 first.

And that surprises me, too. When I saw the original, I was drawn into the world that they created, so I was chomping at the bit for the sequel. What I was a bit worried about was them making a followup that would pale in comparison to the original, but they didn't let me down.

I'm not painting these movies as end-all-be-all any kind of things...they're just solidly entertaining with a pretty well-done production. Are there things I can criticize? Certainly, and the music in the first one was too heavy-handed and overbearing. I think that the success of them is testament to the fact that there's a pretty good audience for a well-made action flick of this type, now and again. I don't think they're overreaching with them, and I don't think that they've tried too hard to make them into anything other than pretty good mindless entertainment. On that score, I think they've succeeded greatly. Go with what works, and stay with your strong suit.

Maybe I made that sound too strong. I didn't dislike 1, but I wasn't completely into it the whole time like 2. It's hard to explain heh.

No, I get what you're saying. When I saw "Serenity", I had no idea that it was linked in any way to "Firefly", and I'd also never seen (or had any interest in) "Firefly".

Holy crap...that movie absolutely drove me to watch the original series. What an amazing production it was.

I'm offended by the language used here to praise the first John Wick. It is a thoroughly bad movie through and through; there's nothing redeeming about it.

Yes, and all Marvel movies (and basically all major western summer popcorn blockbusters) are terrible because you say so. Dude, you earn every bit of the stripes you have.

The Day After

I am in a bit of a 'cold war' / 'atomic annihilation' mood lately and I found out about this film. It is fairly long but does not feel long to watch. Essentially, the bombs are dropped and all hell comes of it. Quite an old film from the early 80s but well done.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_After

The other one I watched recently was Miracle Mile and that was pretty good too with a similar theme but different execution.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_Mile_(film)

The main conclusion in both films being that should the bombs drop none of us will be prospering because of it. I think a lot of people forget but things were extremely tense during the cold war era and if anything people need to be reminded from time to time of what lead up to that situation.
