Anyone know what 'Guwange' means? is it a translation of a Japanese word?

I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure Guwange (ぐわんげ) is a Japanese word :P

I vaguely remember hearing that it's basically a "sound effect" word (like "kaboom" or "click" in English), but I forget what the context was.

I remember reading "Guwange" is an onomonopia. it's the sound that guwange-sama creates.

They should have named it after the sound the catspider makes instead.

And IIRC, it sounds like "gwan-guh"... So no more goo-on-my-wang... ^^

Google Translate pronounces it as "Goo-wung".

And we all know what a fine job google translate usually does...

Just kidding, I just read that somewhere and I don't even remember where, hehe.

I read on Wikipedia at some stage that Guwange-sama is supposed to make the sound thus the title. Makes sense, since you can hear it as "Goo wung" in the main boss theme of the game. :!:

Where/when do you hear it? Could you point it out in a YouTube video or such? I don't recall it :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3P5w5257Cs - choir at the beginning. In high quality it sounds almost more like "Gulag" but as it is in MAME with all its ROM compression et al it sounds almost exact. Certainly makes logical sense.
Also, Google Translate's version of it.

So is this worth downloading now? All patched up to play just fine on a HDTV? No weird aspect ratios or distortion or anything?

There was never an issue on 16:9 HDTVs, assuming you have no problem with the fact the visuals haven't been upgraded at all from the original arcade resolution.

Guwange was always one of Cave's best looking games IMO. Though the upscaling on HDTV's isn't too nice on the graphical style, it does look a lot better on a proper arcade monitor with scanlines.

I used to say "Goo-waunge", then after seeing Rob's videos, I started mispronouncing it as "Goo-wang".

But now I say it like this also. I think that's the proper pronunciation.

It's "goo-wan-gay", not "goo-wang".

Knowing Japanese, the u is probably close to silent, making it more like "G'wahng-geh". But then again they have a habit of putting emphasis on the first syllable.

Who cares? It'll always be "goo-wange" to me. Just as Raiden will always be "ray-den". I couldn't give a monkeys what the proper pronouncation is. Po-tay-to, Po-tah-to.

It's weird, I've always called it Ninja Gaiden like it's supposed to be, but still have to remind myself to not pronounce Raiden "RAYden".
