i know right..this's at least 9 or 8.5..its amazing fked up surreal movie

'...fked up surreal movie' that's why I'd rank it a 7 (6 is a bit harsh). the naivety of the children was extremely hard to believe at times, despite their confined environment. The acting was excellent, particularly by the older sister, and the ending the phenomenal. Overall, I thought it was mediocre albeit with multiple brilliant scenes, they didn't carry the film. as an example, it was established by the middle of the film the father is insane and the mother is subservient and likely insane as well (although at the end, we see she retains her motherly instinct), having the son choose between the sisters and then fuck her was entirely unnecessary.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - 10

Grizzly Man - I've been watching this on & off today. What I find most remarkable isn't Timothy Treadwells decision to hang out w/ bears, but how vile some of these pieces of shit are that Herzog interviewed.

If you watched Fatal Attraction you should also watch and compare with the smarter "Play Misty for Me."

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

The Void. I had been looking forward to it for some time and it ended up being pretty whatever. Amazing practical effects and first act but just really falls flat later on. Reminded me a bit of the final disappointing act of Danny Boyle's Sunshine. Still probably worth watching if you just love practical gore and monster effects.

Music Box in Chicago is playing Solaris & Stalker over Memorial Day Weekend. Want to go... not sure I can. Stalker I see is shot in 1:1.33. The version they're showing is a 4k restoration. Might have to switch some stuff around.

Yeah, I still really like Sunshine overall. The over-the-top silliness doesn't hit until pretty late in the film, and it seemed much earlier in The Void.

The Great Wall

I didn't know what kind of movie this was going to be. But it turned out to be a movie kind that I like a lot. It does suffer from a bit of Matt Damon, who being the most uneducated guy in the movie is able to conjure up some super hero moves to win the hearts of the Chinese who have been fighting a 6 century war.

If you like watching movies that have 6000 extras and looks akin the opening of the Chinese olympics in Beijing crossed with Lord of the Rings, watch this.

I'd give it a 7.5/10.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Blade

Not the godlike movie people make it out to be, but it was ok. Fairly fun at the more pacey parts, and some surprisingly decent and fairly violent action - something Marvel studios have forgotten about entirely since this one kick-started their fortunes. The 'bad' vampire crew were so fucking 90s it hurt, and unbelievably annoying to the point where I was hoping they would die a lot sooner - and the CGI has aged fairly badly. But I must admit to digging Blade's irreverent one-liners; they were the best bit.

If you like Blade go watch the sequel, it's bigger and better. Also avoid Blade Trinity, believe me it's shit.

Fast & Furious 8 (The Fate of the Furious)

An egregiously conservative tale, in which Toretto & co. are law enforcement consultants working for omnipotent government agencies and the main laws that are broken are those of physics (as usual), hacking (more than usual), common sense and plot continuity.
Only cyberterrorists and mercenaries and not-Russian "separatists" get killed (in liberal amounts); innocent bystanders and good guys are spared.
The traditional attention for glamorous cars and sexy women is reduced to the bare minimum, with major battles taking place in the grey streets of New York City and in an Arctic submarine base.

A Knight's Tale: ***

A movie from 2001 with Heath Ledger as a peasant pretending to be a knight (with a fake title of nobility)to compete in jousting tournaments. Think of it as basically a sports movie (albeit a 14th century one) and you get the idea. Not bad overall, but a seriously immersion-breaking soundtrack filled with classic rock power ballads (Queen, David Bowie, AC/DC, etc.) probably does more harm than good. Not quite as bad as a bunch of kids singing Nirvana songs in a World War 2 era film (see also that wretched Pan film from a couple of years ago) but still badly out of place. I actually like most of the music in the film, just not in that contrxt

Just saw The Fate of the Furious. Pretty enjoyable.
Spoiler
However, as enjoyable as it is, I'm pretty disappointed that the villain Cipher (played by Charlize Theron) managed to get away at the end of the movie. It honestly just doesn't feel right for a F&F movie, I mean she just killed Elena and she got away with it. I mean, Dr. Wily gets away at the end of each Mega Man game and Cobra Commander gets away at the end of each G.I. Joe, but this isn't neither of those two.

Sounds wonderful.

Unsurprising when considering Chinese people's attraction to superficial crap, this is a new box office record breaker over here.

The Fate of the Furious: ***1/2

As a connoisseur of superficial crap I watch these films mostly to see how they'll try to top the absurdity of the last film, and they certainly tried with this one. As with most of these things the entire plot basically runs on nonsense and assorted MacGuffins, and serves mostly to facilitate assorted moments of physics-violating badassery by the various headliners. There's no need to bother trying to figure out who is on what side since it changes from film to film (F&F seems to be the Touhou of movie franchises in that regard). That said, it was a good mindless popcorn movie, but I thought it fell a bit short of the last one. More in spoiler text:
Spoiler
The best part of the movie by far was watching Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham's villain from the last film, now on the good guy side for some reason) rescue a toddler from an airplane in flight through a mixture of unbelievable plot contrivances and excessive violence. I thought they wasted Statham on a one-dimensional villain character in the last film, nice to see him get a chance to do some proper ass-kicking in this one.

Sorry yes!

He didn't approve of the tone of his comedy dialogue? Glad he didn't fight it too much. That's the most unique aspect of the whole film, dropping the most off-the-wall quip before ultra-violenting someone's head off.

I think he mentions this in the audio commentary. It was an expression he used to describe Dorff's character off-camera. He didn't think it was fitting as dialogue in film.

My favorite line is inaudible. It's the close-up after he sliced Frost in two. He turns the head, with the shades on and mouths Whaat th fuuuu

Magnum Force
Couldn't pass up Dirty Harry movies for $4. Dvds still, but sourced from the same source as the Blu-Rays and looks fantastic. The movie has a really good soundtrack that still holds up, and is actually on the whole a pretty good movie. Nice plot twists and good acting. Will the rest be as good? Probably not.

Magnum Force is cool. Bit overlong, but worth it - keeps the tone of the classic original while logically expanding on its themes. That movie is about Harry crossing lines; this one's about his limits, and other cops who've gone far beyond them. Not as great, but certainly worthy for fans of the character and/or Eastwood. (if you're into Kurosawa, spot the Stray Dog homage!)

Fourth (Sudden Impact) is kinda Death Wish Lite, but again contributes some decent material with its contrasting of justice and revenge. Also has some neat visuals... the sleepy small-town daylight is blinding and bleaching, while the nights are an inky-black venue for horror. Not bad.

I can't remember much about the third (The Enforcer) or fifth (The Dead Pool) other than a rocket launcher and a harpoon figuring heavily in their respective FINAL BOSS BATTLES. Didn't like them nearly as much. The latter has some truly cringey material that's aged like fine milk. GNR lmao.
