Both Hard Boiled and The Killer were notable VHS rental staples at my local Blockbuster Video joint back in the early 1990s. Even Sonatine was available to rent from BV as well. I rented all three aforementioned movies when they first were featured on the BV new releases section -- you couldn't miss 'em as they were highly prominent and eye-catchy (meaning the VHS movie jackets themselves). By October of 2000, Blockbuster Video sold their remaining VHS rental movie stock and focused on selling & renting DVDs from that point on going forward. American chain retailers such as The Suncoast Pictures Company (aka FYE -- "For Your Entertainment" nowadays), Best Buy and Target had huge anime dvd sections/aisles back in 2002-2004.

Cool! John Woo's films were big in Germany's video rentals as well, although we usually only got slightly to brutally cut versions; German movie censorship in the 90s was wild (actually, we have only recently, say the last ten years at most, begun to rate films in a more realistic way, and now, even gory stuff like Tetsuo and Shiri is rated 16).
I saw Sonatine on an arthouse channel (fittingly called Arte, a German/ French co-production, and still an amazing channel; among else, they showed Eraserhead subtitles and uncut - in the 90s, in Germany) in the late 90s, caught it by accident and then immediately forgot about the other film I was watching. It was one of the most fascinating film experiences of my entire life, and I watched it at least 30 times in the following years. So anyway, a German arthouse label then released it on DVD in the 00s, but I don't they sold many of them...

I'm not one to talk, I'm still missing so many of the classics (I don't even have kids, so plenty of time to watch films!). But we'll get there!

Everything in Germany is cut to ribbons except the 90rn - makes perfect sense to me.

Do Germans really watch something then go out and murder everyone?

This country is a joke.

They finally released a decent uncut bluray of John Woo's Hard Boiled, and in Germany, of all places. Word is it uses the excellent remaster from the Japanese bluray (at least in my opinion image quality is excellent), but it has
- Cantonese, English, and two German language tracks
- English and German subtitles (not dubtitles, yay!)
- the longer Taiwanese cut
- the extras from the Dragon Dynasty bluray, which consist of pretty cool interviews with John Woo, Philip Chan, and Philip Kwok
- the iconic poster artwork on its cover.
Watched the opening scene, then immediately opened my laptop and ordered The Killer on bluray from the same label as well.

O, and I also bought Once Upon a Time in the West and The Void + Colour out of Space blurays for my 80s film watching buddy.
I've seen Hard Boiled in cinema back in 1993, with John Woo in attendance. He had a Q & A afterwards telling that he wants to make musical next, which caused audience to have gasps and nervous laugh. But I didn't think it was crazy as he always had eye for choreography and staging. But to be honest, I didn't follow what he was doing after that, because I lost interest immediately when he went to Hollywood. I only saw Hard Target last year for the first time.. it was Woo all right, but far cry from his Hong Kong productions.

That Hard Boiled screening was in Love & Anarchy film festival (back in time when they still were cool), and they also showed Killer and Better tomorrow which I also went to see, all 35mm prints. But I no longer remember if they were cut or uncut. They did have english subtitles though.

Mate, post first, then start drinking. I clearly wrote that film censorship in Germany used to be retarded, nowadays there's almost none. We still ban shit, but pretty much only when it's child porn or nazi propaganda.

Love to hear stories like the one you posted; mates and I love talking about how we visited video rentals in the 80s (I almost never went to the cinema as a kid). IMHO we (as in people in general, not Germans in particular) kinda live in a golden age of film watching today, just get a video projector, a 5.1 sound system (both of which are cheap as fuck nowadays) and a bluray player and you have a cinema in your living room and can watch all kinds of classics (many of which were never shown at cinemas, at least not in Germany) - at home - with subtitles, uncut - whenever you like. There are fantastic HD remasters of the most obscure films imaginable. Awesome shit like Hellraiser etc. can be bought at rural super markets.

Germany has banned and censored far too much. It hardly matters that they allow more these days : we have literally decades of films that are cut to ribbons over here.

Indeed, most of my films are not German releases. I felt literally cheated watching Day Of The Dead - the german release.

Yes, we are all very aware of the nazi ban - I once tried to play a videogame that happened to have nazi zombies in it. I had bought the game in the UK and tried to install it over here : nope. Had to return it.

I don't like this "putting you in cotton wool" malarky that comes across as controlling that's widespread over here.

I regard Germany as the "nice" form of authoritarianism - it's hardly free and that's an issue.

Indeed, thank the lord we have DVD/BluRay/etc. these days. The stories of people getting their hands on the Japanese VHS/Laserdisc or traveling to Denmark to get a given release and then trying to get it back into the country :D Yes, times were a lot harder.

I once lived in a town down in Bavaria that had a cinema that would only show kids' films - nothing for adults.

This country is weird.

It's not that Germany "allows" "more" these days - if it's not child porn or Nazi propaganda, it's at most rated 18 and that's it. Boardgames and video games can use Swastikas nowadays as well, as long as it doesn't promote Nazi ideology, it's good. The situation used to be ridiculous - in fact, thinking about what it used to be like still makes my blood pressure rise considerably - but it's not anymore. A country censoring gory and violent films because it thinks it fucks up kids' morals is dumb as shit, but it's far from authoritarianism; the way German authorities treated all kinds of left wing movements, and how they turned a blind eye to right wing nonsense, that's where the authoritarianism was.
By the way, I've bought tons of banned films on the internet (uncut Ichi the Killer, Braindead etc.), and sometimes I had to go pick them up at the customs office, but not once have they made trouble. It was piss easy to get banned films into Germany. Almost nobody gave a shit really.
Anyway, if you get around to my neck of the woods (= Southern Bavaria), why don't you drop by and we watch my uncut DVD of Day of the Dead. Ya old crank you.

This reminds me of how a friend in germany was prevented from importing a copy of House of the Dead for the Dreamcast by customs. That was just a few years back.

You must be blessed with really nice Zollamtpersonal - not up here in the north in my experience, I'm afraid.

Yes, I am aware of the "so long as not promoting the Herrenrasse, etc." bollocks.

But they still attempt to control everyone and wrap us all up in cotton wool - it's annoying and seems to be a cultural facet over here.
Indeed, we were discussing why the German authoritiies would not allow Contra to have "Rambo Guys" and instead opted for the (pretty cool, I feel) robots instead. Because they must have thought that we'd all be out "raping, looting and a shootin'"[1] in no time :D All rather aunty like an silly.

We do in fact live in an authoritarian nation, my dear friend. We do not have free speech, you fail to pay your tax on time : you are in very deep trouble. An issue paying the health issurance because some office fails to notify another office and you have the Zollamt at your door demanding.

The left and right extremes are alive, well, and not very healthy over here; I have no idea why Germany is a nation of extremists, but it's just how they are.

There you go: you said Germany and then revealed that you reside in "southern Germany - aka Bavaria" - we up here are still living in Prussia :D Different ethos entirely.

My one recollection of Bavaria is seeing the condoms in the "Hygein" aisle of the Rossmann :D

Half of the issue, I feel, is this notion that it's fine to control everything all the time. It is not at all healthy and one reason I prefer other more liberal nations.

Still, could be worse, could be the UAE :)

Yep. But we can buy porn here, so there is that.

Whenever I see zombies, meat, etc. and I am in Germany, I always have this driving desire to go out and murder everyone, not sure why, think it could be the media, yes, let's blame that.

1. Customs in different parts of Germany seem to behave differently, but Bavaria is known for its conservative attitude towards violence and sex, so I would have expected that they're the strictest in all of Germany. But experiences are different and I want to acknowledge that.
2. With regards to censorship, you're living in the past, mate, and the longer you refuse to acknowledge that those times are over, the more ridonculous it will look. Btw House of the Dead has been unbanned/ was taken from the "index" (= Liste A that prohibits advertising for a film or video game + you can't sell it to minors) and is now rated 18. Customs officials are known to make mistakes (they never had the right to keep a copy of HotD), but it doesn't turn Germany into an authoritarian state.
3. I still have no idea why you think Germany is an authoritarian state; you do realise that the question of political freedom is a scale, not an either/ or-decision? The constitution guarantees tons of basic rights; the fact that there are rare cases where those are ignored by the police and intelligence (and then there usually is broad public debate about it) does not mean that Germany is an authoritarian state. If you look at the freedom index that measures democracy, Germany has a score of 93/100; the most recent report says:

Germany is a representative democracy with a vibrant political culture and civil society. Political rights and civil liberties are largely assured in law and practice. The political system is influenced by the country’s totalitarian past, with constitutional safeguards designed to prevent authoritarian rule. Although Germany has generally been stable since the mid–20th century, political tensions have grown in recent years following a sharp increase in the number of asylum seekers in the country and the growing popularity of right-wing populist movements.

Couple of more points:
- That Germany is a nation of extremists is nonsense. As mentioned above, there has been a rise of right wing extremism, but the corresponding party can expected to get around 18% of the votes in the next elections next year. Most people are actually disgusted by the attitudes displayed by the AfD and fans of said party, and there is a widening gulf between AfD-sympathisers and the rest of the population.
- You seem to hold the opinion that not allowing Nazi propaganda is a restriction of freedom of speech. There are probably cultural differences at work here, but there is a consensus in Germany that hate speech of all kind, and particularly Nazi propaganda, is not protected by your right to free speech, and seeing how it's an established fact that hate speech leads to a rise in real world violence (particularly exemplified by Nazi propaganda, which was crucial in getting people to accept the war and the attempted extermination of various minorities), I have no problem at all with that. Have you visited a Nazi concentration camp btw? If you live in the north, have you been to Auschwitz? That's the context in which we have formed our ideas of basic rights.

Obviously the result of a dumb cultural attitude, as I have already said, but Contra was released late 80s/ early 90s, so totally irrelevant with regards to the question of what the situation is in 2024. Also, German authorities weren't involved in any decision re: Contra, Konami changed the soldiers to robots to avoid trouble. Parents at that time were slightly retarded as well/ believed in the horrible effects of media violence on their spawn, so Konami simply pandered to a certain market. Sorry to all the other European nations who, because of us, got the slightly censored/ still very cool versions of Contras, but Germany was a very important market, so it was understandable.

We do in fact live in an authoritarian nation, my dear friend. We do not have free speech, you fail to pay your tax on time : you are in very deep trouble. An issue paying the health issurance because some office fails to notify another office and you have the Zollamt at your door demanding.
Free speech obviously has nothing to do with the obligation to pay taxes. What are you, some kind of secret militia member from rural Texas? How the hell is a state supposed to work if it doesn't collect taxes? Why are we even discussing this nonsense? Do you drive on roads or see the sense in sending kids to school? But sure, we could go back to Feudalism where only the rich can afford basic rights.
Also, what's this about failing to pay your health insurance? Either you have public health insurance, in which case you simply can't not pay it because your insurance will be deducted from your salary (Brutto VS Netto), if you have private health insurance your insurance company will simply drop you as a customer? You need to be a lot more specific man.

Why don't you tell us which other countries are less authoritarian and why, maybe then I'll understand your perspective better.

Er, no, but nice attempt to bring out the rules and regulations all the same.

1. Freedom of speech does not mean "Nazi Propaganda" - it means free speech and freedom of expression - like in say Denmark, the USA, etc. We do not have that here.

I would imagine that you haven't spent all that much time residing/living in other nations and perhaps struggle to find something to compare Bavaria to.

Indeed, Germany is very good at "living in the past".

I've spent full time a good 14+ years residing here in Germany, I think that qualifies me to assess, contrast and compare. I've also lived in other nations and traveled extensively. I've even lived in Bavaria :)

I still have my Criterion DVD of Hard Boiled, and I even prefer it over the Dragon Dynasty release(also went so far as to do comparisons between the two).

I do, too, but seriously, this new bluray blasts it out of the water and is the only thing you will ever need.

Yeah.

Best way to hold vacuous notions : be dismissive : you are a nazi/troll/fascist/idiot/etc.

I do find it amusing that you chose this thread in this forum of all places to get on your soapbox though  This is a gaming forum after all. You won't find much serious debate and discussion for big topics here, my man.

Very hard to take someone of your disposition serious.

You do you.

Because I take your opinion serious and want to show respect towards your person, I made the effort of typing up long paragraphs with proper arguments, of which you provided none. Since your answer was basically reiterating your dumb points, I chose to interpret this as troll behaviour.
Puff puff but but
- it's just a gaming forum lol
Yeah, totally, man, if this was the "Advanced studies of the political sciences"-forum you like to hang out at, you'd totally crush me with your arguments. Let's be real here, you're just clueless, but like everybody else with opinions, you can't stand it when someone challenges the half baked bullshit you trot out. If you don't want to get called out, stop talking out of your ass.

Finally got myself a OSSC Pro!

Got a good first impression. Seems to do all the things I need it to do to be happy with just this one unit for every console I own.

And some Legos, somehow.

Finished my Rayearth model kit last friday. One of my favorite anime. Displaying it on the side of my desk to act as a good luck charm while working on my (similar themed) game

That's the one that stood out in that haul for me, too - I can never find even a loose cart here in Japan on the rare occasions I go sifting :c
Kirby's Pinball Land was pretty formative for me, and I always relegatored the original title to rental status back in the day, but hot damn if I don't get a hankering to play it now and then.
