Ah, that explains it. Yes, those kinds of monitors are rare nowadays for sure. I had an NEC Multisync that did 15, 28 and 31 back in the late 80s, but it's long, long gone. There is one list I know of that has at least models to look for if you ever get curious. https://www.cocopedia.com/wiki/index.ph ... A_Monitors

The Microvitec 1438 is probably the easiest 15/31kHz CRT to find in Europe, but the pin out is slightly different than the X68000, so I need to figure out how to make an adapter first.
Well it's good you've got that one! An adapter doesn't sound like the hardest thing to do. Maybe this is some help https://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:japanese_rgb-15

My dream CRT would be something like a NEC XM-29, but good luck finding one of those. :|
Yep. I've been looking for one of those for years and years. I've seen a few come and go on ebay maybe 15 or more years ago, but it never lined up conveniently for me. If I think about all the great monitors I've had to pass on over the years it makes me sad lol.

The Sony Trinitron CPD-9000 9" RGB monitor is a low-res 15.7KHz one as well.

The Atari SC1224 monitor (1st version was made in South Korea by Goldstar aka "LG" nowadays for client Atari) for use with the Atari ST lineup of computers -- is a true low-res 15.7 kHz RGB monitor but requires a mod to get it to accept Scart (otherwise, you can only use it just for an Atari ST setup and nothing else). The Atari SC1224 "Version 2" low-res 15.7kHz RGB monitor was manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi for client Atari -- both Version 1 & Version 2 SC1224 monitors are easier to source on the secondary market in the USA/Canada indeed.

The Commodore Amiga 1080 14" low-res 15.7kHz RGB monitor (with a January 1986 manufactured date in Japan) -- is regarded as a must have retro gaming RGB monitor these days -- has the earliest version/example of S-Video input (with separate inputs of "Chroma" & " Luma") in addition to RCA Composite Video & DB-9 based RGB inputs (before the current S-Video four-pin interface was implemented/adopted later on).

I believe the issue is that the X68000 is multisync itself. If it was just a matter of finding a 15kHz RGB monitor, the world is your oyster.

Yes, the machine and most games default to 31khz at the very arcadey 55htz. There are some games that only support 15khz, but only about 10% of the library. And yes, a few games are 24khz native and look best in that mode. All sharp monitors were auto trisyncs. Some games even switch between modes too (31khz for menus, 15khz for gameplay)

Lol, this was cutting edge tech back then. And although very rare, a few games even use 480i, Syvalion being the most well known. Most long term X68000 owners stick to trisyncs, or use an XPC-4.

Just picked up Contra.

I have stumbled on a few great condition silver boxed NES games in the past so I pick one up when I can. Unfortunately I don't double dip and I have a few on Famicom so won't double up on those. Especially considering the FC version is better in some cases.

I have Jackal, Contra, RushNattack, Turtles 1, Castlevania & Track & Field. Didn't realize there were 25 titles though

Also, I am collecting games from the USA which had different names to the Euro counterparts. USA versions on cart that were on disk in Japan as well.

Wow, that's a super useful resource! Thanks for the link!

Finding the right monitor for your needs, especially old ones, is a real pain, so any documentation is a huge help.

ryu wrote: Wed Aug 28, 2024 8:57 pmI still got one... but it badly needs an expert's thorough servicing. :| I'm in germany too, but can't decide if I want to get rid of it or keep it in case I ever feel like bothering with finding somebody to restore it. The problem is, if it can be serviced, it's probably worth gold. But I also can't be asking much for it as long as I can't guarantee that it is salvageable. :?
What's wrong with the monitor? It should be possible to find someone in Germany who can do maintenance on it, no?
Alternatively, let me know if you wanna get rid of it. ^^

The hardware ain't cheap, but that was definitely a wise decision to stock up on games, while they were cheap. ^^

A friend of mine here in Germany wants to sell his X68030 btw. Super pristine condition as well, as fully serviced by BEEP Shop. Let me know if you're interested, just know that the 030 has a few compatibility issues with older games due to the 32bit CPU.

Displaced Gamers just released a video about Contra Force and he brushed on the OG Contra and why it was so different from the Famicom release. Basically has to do with the proprietary memory mapper ICs that Nintendo International required companies to buy from them to release games overseas. Interesting watch if you're into this kind of stuff.

Bionic Commando is my favourite localization, as the original Japanese title was called "Hitlers Resurrection" and had a whole bunch of swastikas littered all over the place and from what I saw on youtube, a whole different storyline for the west. Capcom didn't let it go to waste and made a good game out of Bionic Commando.

I am aware of the memory mapping scene and that Nintendo licensed the mappers in the west, but gave free reign in Japan. Hence all the Japanese exclusives that used different memory mappers and FM sound chips, that the west was unfortunately deprived of.

Holy balls, nice get CIT! Lately I've been mulling over the JP PC scene... it used to be something I just figured was out of my wheelhouse, but getting a bit older and being pretty happy with my console stuff, I've wondered if it's worth a go. Same with arcade boards I suppose.

Yeah, Hitler's still in the NES localisation. You still make his head explode. They removed the bit where you lash a Nazi soldier for information, though. Now you just swing across his spiked pit, and he's cowed by your platforming skills into coughing up the deets.

What in the sweet fucking Christ are you on about richie. I thought you, too, were of proud Nazi-killing stock? It's got Swastikas on scenery and vehicles because you're invading Neo-Nazi territory to kill Hitler before he can launch a nuke.

The FC rev's better, by the way. ;3 Way more enemies onscreen at critical points, rivalling the arcade game. Also Capcom removed a shooting star from the NES, WTF?! Rad (and model-accurate!) box, too.

I've only watched videos of Bionic commando. I've never played it on NES. Played it on Commodore 64 back in the day. And I only found out about it clicking on random youtube videos very recently.

I actually love collecting CIB NES/FC games as its an era in which I stuck to computers rather than consoles. My first console was a 3DO in 1994 when Commodore went bankrupt. Now NES/SNES/SFC/FC are the biggest part of my collection and easily the most expensive % of the whole thing. If I find a Bionic commando I'll pick it up.

Great game! Like Rygar, it's often misrepresented by nostalgia jerkoffs as a merely compromised home interpretation. ("mutant," per one plonker :|) Their original names (Top Secret: Hitler no Fukkatsu and Argus no Senshi: Hachamecha Daishingeki) confirm both were sequels developed for the home market.

Incidentally, Hitler no Fukkatsu got an expanded GB remake that uses the Western Bionic Commando title, without further adornment, even in Japan. Drops the AC game and its FC sequel's chibi-gritty Neo WW2 style, for a more Saint Seiya look. Pretty nice character designs imo, and still unmistakably on the grimmer side for its niche. Easily as good as the FC game and its arcade predecessor! (quick review at foot of post)

I would call it Top Secret: The Resurrection of Hitler's Resurrection, but the eponymous tyrant's head remains thoroughly exploded.

A friend of mine came over from Japan and gave me Ikari no Yōsai 2 and Metroid II - both on the original Gameboy.

I have owned the first Ikari no Yōsai game for some years and I have the SFC game too. Quite cool to roam around these dungeon like rooms and floors blowing things away.

I haven't tried Metroid II as yet.

I didn't play the GB as a kid, but there are some really good titles and I thank you chaps for giving me advice a few years back on what to play :)

Metroid II is an amazing game for the OG Gameboy. I borrowed my cousin's GB for awhile back in the early 90s and I played the hell out of it. Honestly the OG Gameboy was such a fun system. The Zelda games, the Mario stuff, Motocross Maniacs, Tetris, Donkey Kong Land, Final Fantasy games. I had so much fun playing that system.

I hope you're enjoying it. How are you playing them? I guess if I was going to go back and play them again like that, I would get an OG unit and mod in a backlit screen. That would be ideal.

Alright, mate!

well, I heard that Metroid II was decent, I am looking forward to spending time with it.

True, there are so many decent games on the original GB. My brother had one as a kid but apart from playing Tetris on others' GBs I never really played it. The screen wasn't all that appealing as a kid.

I have been using the Super Gameboy version 1 on my modded SNES.

I do have a GBA and a replacement, decent screen but I never got round to installing it. The GBA is good in that you can play original carts.

Castlevania II I played about 10 years back on the GBA and it was really good.

I wish to get my hands on Duck Tales and have heard good things about it on the GB.

I have to agree, really easier to play them using a unit on the GC or SNES/SFC. I also have a handheld that I use for on the go gaming. Usually, when visiting others or on trips or when I find myself in hotel rooms waiting around.

Marvellous machine it is and my little collection has been steadily growing over the years

I didn't post an photo as both are just loose carts without manuals, so nothing exciting.

I just more or less finished putting together a new USB camera microscope setup for my PCB rework. I got a Raspberry Pi and a Global Shutter Camera unit and put it all together with a microscope stand. For the display, I lucked out on ebay with this amazing Eizo medical display (less than 200 bucks) basically brand new. It does 1600x1200, so it's also really handy if I want to use it for a bunch of retrogaming stuff as it does perfect integer scaling at 4:3 for anything that's a multiple of 320x240, or 320x200.

I'm reasonably happy with my most recent haul of stuff from yJapan. Some guidebooks I'll eventually get around to scanning, and some neat music (some of which I think I was lucky to stumble upon).

I also picked up a small packet of sketches that seem to have been some sort of giveaway for people who bought the Deathsmiles Drama CD at an event. I forgot to throw it in the picture but I imagine I'll scan it and throw it online soon.

56K Warning!! (Sorry, not sorry)

Post by To Far Away Times »

Had a great day at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo yesterday.

First off some swag:

Image

Got some new dice. The dark blue ones have holographic foil in them, and the light blue ones have liquid cores:

Image

The last remaining Blockbuster, (located in Bend, Oregon) set up a huge booth that was a joy to visit and check out some tapes (What year is it?):

Image
Image

Got to check out some historical oddities:

Image
Image

There was an awesome Sega Lounge complete with a Sega sound system and period appropriate music:

Image

And I got to play some of my bucket list arcade games:

Image
Image

More details on the arcade experience:
Spoiler
I was very fortunate to hit the arcade during off peak hours. In fact, no one was lining up for the exA machines, so I credit fed through SDOJ, Touhou Pefect Sakura Fantastica, and A̶k̶a̶i Crimson Katana. I also put a bunch of time into Touhou Scarlet Diablolique Fantastica.

My thoughts on each:
SDOJ - exA mode is the definitive mode of the game. The game gets off to a groan worthy start, were you have to pick the lingerie for your loli avatar. The game even goes as far as to tell you it's for appearance only, which really adds to the sleaze factor. But things improve from there. exA mode is uncommonly generous with resources by arcade standards, and features re-balanced patterns and a less insane difficulty level. Still, I didn't love how the game is constantly trying to wall you and how relentless it is with the swarming enemies and bullet walls. There are no 1-2 second pacing breaks anywhere except before the bosses. You will be doing U shaped dodging and cut backs continuously for five minutes until the boss shows up. Made it to the stage 3 boss on my first credit. This game gets pretty difficult towards the end, but I would think this one is doable by mere mortals with enough practice. Sadly, this game was largely ignored on the cabinet, in favor of Fight of Gods, which looked like a straight up kusoge.

Crimson Katana - I really didn't care for the exA mode here. Felt like a less good remix of the Slash mode while lacking the ability to fire your Katanas, so it doesn't have that visceral scoring feel of Slash. Still, a leap above the kind of awful original Akai Katana. Made it to the stage 3 boss on my first credit. Harder than Akai Katana Slash due to the mechanics, but uses the same bullet patterns and enemy placements, as far as I could remember. I guess this game is fine enough as a port of Slash to a new platform, but I wouldn't bother with the exA mode.

Touhou Pefect Sakura Fantastica - So I played a casual credit of the PC version a while back and I really didn't care for it all that much and never returned to it. But there's something about playing this in an arcade environment that really elevates the experience. I made it to the stage 5 boss on my first credit. This is a pretty chill game until a big difficulty spike at the Stage 5 boss, and then Stage 6 seemed quite a bit easier. Also, the game would weirdly have a half second second pause every now and then as I assume it was loading in assets. It wasn't frequent, but when it happened it was jarring. Heard multiple people comment "Oh shit, I didn't know they made a Touhou arcade game" so it definitely piqued some interest.

Touhou Scarlet Diablolique Fantastica - This was the real gem of the show. Also a pretty chill game, saw a bunch of people make it pretty far into it on their first go. I bet arcade operators won't be too happy with many players hitting 15-20 minute play sessions on a blind credit if they have some previous Touhou experience. I reached Stage 6 twice on one credit, but alas I couldn't claim the 1CC. As a consolation prize, I ended up with second place on the Raymoo leaderboard. Pretty much anytime someone changed which game was being played, next player up would go right back to this one. Definitely the crowd favorite of the shmups. I would say most people spent their time either with this game, or Gimmick Exact Mix. The other games on the cab didn't get much play time.

I came away with a new appreciation for the those two Touhou Fantastica games, and will be sinking more time into the home versions in the future.

Also, shout out to the guy with the furry dog ears and tail who claimed Grandmaster rank on TGM3. That was fun to watch and an incredible display of skill. He might never get laid, but he'll always be a Tetris Grandmaster.
And lastly, was the Dr. Mario Championship:

Image

I really don't care much for Dr. Mario, but seeing it played competitively at a high level was pretty cool. Garbage blocks are very oppressive in this, and players need to constantly adapt their strategies on the fly. Very cool as a multiplayer game.

Awesome. I didn't get out to any gaming shows this year; I usually at least get out to VCF East in April, but this year I had to skip it. It looks like a lot of fun.

I love Dr. Mario. I'm not that great at it, but it's probably my favorite puzzle game. Either that or Columns III

British police: "Excuse me, old chap, would you mind terribly if I overtook and asked you to - if it wouldn't be too much trouble - slow down?"
French police: "The burning wreckage will be the first flames you see as I drag you to hell myself."
used to be i guess... no more.. police is politically struck, urban gangs rule their world & beyond

And lastly, was the Dr. Mario Championship:

I really don't care much for Dr. Mario, but seeing it played competitively at a high level was pretty cool. Garbage blocks are very oppressive in this, and players need to constantly adapt their strategies on the fly. Very cool as a multiplayer game.
RESPECT - this is what we like to see!
Those guys are taking it VERY seriously.

Amazing how games and systems can be taken to the nth degree and the people who play games a lot end up knowing more about it often than the original designers.

Looks like a really good fun event that you went to, mate - thanks for posting :)

I'm bit late for the "...you just bought" since I bought this Data East Robocop PCB month ago, and only now I have time to post.

Coincidentally, I also 1CC'd it 10 minutes ago, for the first time in my life - wanted to do that since 1989 :D

They finally released a decent uncut bluray of John Woo's Hard Boiled, and in Germany, of all places. Word is it uses the excellent remaster from the Japanese bluray (at least in my opinion image quality is excellent), but it has
- Cantonese, English, and two German language tracks
- English and German subtitles (not dubtitles, yay!)
- the longer Taiwanese cut
- the extras from the Dragon Dynasty bluray, which consist of pretty cool interviews with John Woo, Philip Chan, and Philip Kwok
- the iconic poster artwork on its cover.
Watched the opening scene, then immediately opened my laptop and ordered The Killer on bluray from the same label as well.

O, and I also bought Once Upon a Time in the West and The Void + Colour out of Space blurays for my 80s film watching buddy.
