House - Blu ray

Think this came out in 1987. A goofie kind of horror that tries to be funny. The blu ray extras go on like its a masterpiece and a cult classic but for me its just a run of the mill Horror comedy with questionable choices in effects. The soundtrack is quite good and there are some good ideas in place but there is quite a lot of filler between important scenes. The blu ray looks spectacular. If the last time you saw this it was VHS the upgrade is well worth a look as it looks fantastic.

House 2 - Blu ray

The sequel is one of my all time favourite 80's movies up there with Return of the living dead. The soundtrack is daunting but mesmerizing, the story is just bonkers to say the least and the comedy just keeps coming and coming (Like the Kleenex). If you took my recommendation to watch "Return of the living dead" but haven't watched House 2, please do. Again, blu ray is a masterpiece. If like me the last time you saw this on VHS, you'll be amazed how good it looks. Can't wait to watch the extras.

It is very funny but I would argue that Undefeatable is a better "bad film".

Damn, that was good! But maybe a tad too gritty for Power Rangers.
When is Japan making a remake of Goranger? They now know what they shouldn't do after the mess that was the 2005 remake of Kamen Rider, and it's lolwut JP horror sequel The Next.
I recall watching this fan-made Power Rangers short film back in 2015 (it was available to d/l but vimeo disabled that particular feature after Saban wanted it delisted/banned) -- hot damn with the busty gals at the 3:38 timeline mark. ^_~

Spoiler
The Major's true identity was Motoko Kusanagi. I knew it! Are people gonna start comparing that to Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness and Blofeld in Spectre?
Have not seen the most recent movie yet, but I'm surprised to see that this is a spoiler.
Trust me, it's worth it.

Watched Resident Evil last night against my will. Holy god above, what a thoroughly awful piece of gutter trash this thing is, shit to the core. When I read general public quotes online saying "I enjoyed this", and "it's good fun", I don't know whether to weep for the chronic brain death of humanity, or wish for its eradication.

Also, that James Cameron cited this as his favourite "guilty pleasure" says a lot about James Cameron. Level of respect diminished by a considerable degree.

It's set to bring in a whopping $20 mil opening weekend... going up against Boss Baby. Turd burger, but I guess that's expected. They need to hire a real director. (Not that I've seen his other film, but it looked like shit as well).

From a google search, Scarlett Johansson made like 17.5 mill on this movie.
And now, w/ the apparent flop of the movie, she's gone about defending the film along w/ the director, doing the same shenanigans.
It's so sad.
So much was done right in terms of the special effects and setting: but they fucked the story here and there in scenes: OMG: it was so SAD.
I brainwashed my daughter, as a little child, watching all the Stand Alone Complex series...
Even she, was so unimpressed.
Much to like visually.
But everything else, was SAD.
Haven't been as disappointing in a movie in a long time.

New Blade Runner better be better. Please god, please.

I thought Arrival was great, so I actually have some decent sized expectations for this one. Check it out if you can. Obviously it won't top the first one, but at this point there's no reason to think it will suck... except for that everything else these days usually does. :D I do have like zero expectations for much else this summer. Alien Covenant looks like something I shat out last time I came back from Mexico.

The Blob (1957)
I can not see why it would have scared any people back then? But overall the movie was okay.

The Blob (1988)
Wow, what a remake. Great practical effects and some funny scenes.

Elle

All about the protagonist, Michèle (Isabelle Huppert), whose life and personality are uncovered in stages while the plot goes forward. At the beginning there are only the noises of her being raped by a masked intruder in her home, then we see her and her comfortable house in Paris, then her friends and family appear one by one, she begins to react to the rape, we see her at work, etc.
Discovering the rapist and dealing with him is the most important plot thread, but it isn't as central and cathartic as it would be in a stupid thriller, it's only one of several issues Michèle worries about. (The others are better left not spoiled, to avoid ruining the puzzling effect of cuts to strange characters, places and dialogues).

Highly recommended for great acting, excellent photography and editing, unusually meaningful dialogue, and artistic importance as a portrait of contemporary life from the point of view of a particularly cynical character; but recommended only to vaguely open-minded people, as it is a story of assorted sexual perversions (apart from the rapist, there are tentacle porn videogames and a surprise) and of horrible and/or promiscuous relationships.
I overheard two people sitting behind me: "Disgusting! Ugly! Terrible! Worst film ever! Oh no, lesbians!". Clearly not a suitable audience, to the point of being wrong about the lesbians, but on the other hand the right people to provoke.

As expected. It looked very average from the 5 minutes of footage we saw.

Worth noting that it doesn't come out here in China until Friday. Many films that have not done so well domestically have made their money back and then some thanks to Chinese audiences - so they have a glimmer of hope in terms of squaring their outlay.

It's also worth noting that Chinese moviegoing audiences are privy to absolutely nothing of intellectual value whatsoever (what little of it there is in today's movies) and only receive Hollywood's most CG spectacular releases and superhero bollocks. We didn't even get Moonlight FFS.

The Blob, The Fly, The Thing... uncannily consistent trio of 50s->80s creature horror remakes with smart writing and killer practical effects. Can't think of one without immediately recalling the other two.

You are perfectly right...and don´t forget about Re-Animator!

I got The Blob, Re-Animator and The Fly Mediabooks recently. They were expensive but worth every cent. 8)

I´m really into collecting Mediabiooks from Horror films...

Re-Animator is definitely in the same league, and actually rounds them out perfectly, being more of a black horror comedy versus Blob's classic creature feature, Fly's tragedy and Thing's suspense.

Some of the deeply wrong shit Jeffrey Combs blurts out in that movie, with perfect psychotic deadpan... Gotta mention the inextricably linked From Beyond involving much of the same people too, ofc - anyone who likes Re-Animator should see it ASAP.

Ghost in the shell - Scarlett version

Never watched the anime movie so can't compare. I think it failed for me. More so on connecting with the audience as a whole. Its ok seeing lots of CGI and action scenes. But if you don't connect to it in any way whatsoever it just separates the fluff scenes.

Hollywood needs to start finding out how to do some cool shit that hasn't been done before. I've watched so many movies in the past 5 years where close hand to hand combat and sharp shooting has become the normal. Its almost like the action scenes send me to sleep whilst the story is keeping me awake.

The next Japanese rendition to get the Burger treatment is Death Note. I watched the trailer and saw what looked like action scenes in fair grounds and stuff. I don't know what to say.

Surprised they're allowed to see a pro-Japan film. In all seriousness, whilst they might make their dough back, I'm pretty sure the tax payers want to see a 3 or 4 fold return on investment for such an endeavor. I mean... that $110 million (still not a ton by todays standards) was tied up for what? 2 years?
It's also worth noting that Chinese moviegoing audiences are privy to absolutely nothing of intellectual value whatsoever (what little of it there is in today's movies) and only receive Hollywood's most CG spectacular releases and superhero bollocks. We didn't even get Moonlight FFS.

You gotta be kidding. Japanese media is a huge market here. There are 3 or 4 anime cons every year and the city is flooded with teens in cosplay carrying bags of merch, and all the fast food stores are constantly promoting TV anime serials and whatnot. Online gaming too. I think GITS will probably do fairly well here, at a guess.

Don't think about old people with nationalistic bricks on their shoulders: they aren't the target audience at all.

No, it's a complete myth. In all honesty I wish they'd fucking cap it at two. The Hollywood shitstream here is so refined it makes me want to puke.

When I go to the Philippines the biggest and best cinemas only charge $4 per movie (and you get guards and shit on the aisles, its fantastic). Is China the same or do they charge western prices to go to see films?

They range massively depending on how you buy and what screen you want to watch on. On average they're around 45 kuai, which is about £5 at the moment. But if you buy with a phone app they can be as cheap as 25, depending on the size of the screen. If you're getting IMAX biz, you can pay 70 (£8) at the door, or maybe 50 (£6 ish) on an app. Most I've ever seen is 98 kuai at the door (about £11).

Usually I pay around 30 kuai to watch a movie, so about £4. The Phillipines is bound to be cheaper, China is getting really expensive; in some cases it out-prices London. :(

Yeah theatres in China are expensive especially when you think about the purchasing power in some areas.
I remember the first and only time I've been to one in Beijing (wudaokou) was about 50rmb and very shitty, back in 2001 that was a lot of money for the mostly student population of the district. Approximately the price of a rather high-class restaurant.

edit: 98 wtf

Ghost in the Shell (US) 3/10
Almost everything cool in the film (apart from the production design, and even that lost its charm after seeing the same huge holograms between skyscrapers for the fifth time, and Kitano, which I was prepared to be annoyed by because he was clearly only included in the film as a nod to Japanese audiences; he got some cool (if out of character) shit to do) was from the animes. Everything they changed was idiotic; from a feminist standpoint (fuck you, I enjoy watching intelligent, multi-layered female characters like the Major from the original) it was a step backwards as well
Spoiler
the Major didn't choose her body or her profession; Scarlett Johanson does a decent job, but after an hour of her looking like a fucking puppy in mourning I had enough of her as well. she comes across as an angsty skulking teenager instead - which in reality she is... backstory is dumb; didn't have the balls to sell to a mainstream audience the idea of an AI which has evolved "naturally" in the net, ey? has to be the victim of experiments by an evil corporation who takes revenge... would have had potential as a commentary on contemporary terrorism, but no, another angsty teenager... literally
even most of the action scenes were shitty (they still include wire-fu into their films, fuuuuuuuuuuck) and painfully PG (oh no, let's not show any broken bones here!). What a waste of talent. Who is this Ruper Sanders fucker anyway? Snow White and the Huntsman, uh-huh... you fucked up, Rupert.

Skykid wrote: Also, that James Cameron cited this as his favourite "guilty pleasure" says a lot about James Cameron. Level of respect diminished by a considerable degree.
Never got the Cameron = god attitude. Terminator and Alien 2 were excellent flicks, but he made them a long time ago. In the meantime, we got Titanic (shitty, clicheed snoozefest) and Avatar (Dances with Smurfs with some decent action scenes and painfully clicheed noble savage bullshit/ primitive pro environment ideology rammed down the viewer's throat. looks like a fucking PS4 game)
