Conversely I've heard next to nothing about Hollow Knight since it was released on Switch, while everyone was raving about it back when it came out on PC.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
yeah, i played through hollow knight twice back to back when it came out. i'll have to go back and play through again now all the (free) dlc is out. it's really amazing, i don't think it's a stretch to say it's the best metroid style game ever made, but i haven't 100% made my mind up about that. imiho the only thing super metroid has going over it is the depth and multipurpose-ness of samus' movement kit (which is just amazing).
one thing i am slightly worried about is that the game already had a huge amount of content at launch and maybe all the extra dlc stuff is just unnecessary flab.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Had it sat on my Switch for a while now, been trying to avoid starting anything too long, but now the long winter nights are drawing in...
Picked up Hyrule Warriors over the weekend. Seems fun enough, if a little vacant. Don't think I've ever played one of these games before - I have vague memories of perhaps trying to get into one on GameCube, can't remember for the life of me which though.
Made 4th boss of King of Dragons thanks to the sage advice on the Capcom thread. Actually feels like there's less to it than Final Fight, but neither is it quite as frustrating.

Horizon Chase Turbo... been craving a (new) arcade style racer for quite some time.
It's a simple game but it's loaded with content and I've been hooked on it.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I really enjoyed it on mobile - reminded me a lot of the old Lotus games on Amiga.Strider77 wrote:Horizon Chase Turbo... been craving a (new) arcade style racer for quite some time.

Can't quite bring myself to pony up the £20.00 for the console version, but will definitely pick up in a sale.

Finally had enough schlepping around and finished Yakuza Kiwami 2 - still some baffling stuff at work (I can't sell stuff from my storage box?), but as the game goes on you do notice more and more improvements over 6. I'm still watching from a distance concerning the "Project Judge" spinoff; I guess we won't know for certain 'til it's out, but aside from another appearance by the somewhat clumsy Dragon Engine it sounds like they're going in a somewhat more serious direction with it, when perhaps the decisive factor that got me into Yakuza was the goofball humor (which makes some memorable appearances in Kiwami 2, I should note) to take the edge off of the violent melodramatic nonsense. Whatever happens I can't say I didn't enjoy the half-dozen Yakuza games I've played, so even if it goes off somewhere I'm not inclined to follow I can't have any hard feelings about it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yeah, the humor is a big draw for me as well. I'm probably more interested overall in the FOTNS reskin and where they are going with the new mainline Yakuza games, or at least I think I remember hearing something about that. I don't pay a ton of attention tbh, I just get games I am interested in after release.BulletMagnet wrote:Finally had enough schlepping around and finished Yakuza Kiwami 2 - still some baffling stuff at work (I can't sell stuff from my storage box?), but as the game goes on you do notice more and more improvements over 6. As far as the stories do go, replaying that storyline again reminded me that it's pretty much my favorite in the franchise. Lots of twists and turns.

Yeah, this is where I'm at. I never dreamed that it would be this good. It is absolutely at least on par with Super Metroid.Immryr wrote:i don't think it's a stretch to say it's the best metroid style game ever made, but i haven't 100% made my mind up about that.

Soldier of Fortune (PC) - Got it from GOG for $10 & replaced the exe with the SOFPlus client. Soldier of Fortune: Payback is not even half this good (for that one, Activision gambled with a different developer rather than sticking with Raven... and they lost.). For this franchise, stick with the first two & forget the third.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Well that isn't hard to achieve tbhNecronopticous wrote: absolutely at least on par with Super Metroid.

So i'm still trying to finish Shitmue.
Now, what I've been doing in the forklift job is hit quota then just leave the game running and do some metrosexual yoga stretches or play DS or do the dishes... until the day runs out.
This means i didn't hit the cutscene trigger for the second assault on Ryo in the warehouse, for two days running
Which means my game was in limbo as Ryo repeated the same work day for the 3rd time.

Getting better at Battle Brothers. This game is the best SRPG I've ever played. Terrible tutorial, but once you get past that with online guides this game is better than Final Fantay Tactics and Divinity Original Sin combined.
There's an expansion pack in the works!

I'm going through The Evil Within on Akumu difficulty. I managed it on the 360 and vowed never again, but now I'm old, wiser and desperately waiting for RE2 that this is about a close as you can get to a proper modern survival horror. The second game was ok, but it lacked variety, bosses, pacing and good map design. Playing on PS4 and the performance is still jank, maybe even worse than the 360 version.
I'm about half way through and loving every minute that isn't a scripted forced walking section... About to take on the Laura boss fight.

Picked up Hyrule Warriors for Switch. This is one type of game that I've somehow managed to avoid completely, more by accident than by design, though I do have very vague memories of playing some cartoon/deformed kind of spin-off on.... GC maybe? First impressions are that it's very flashy, and good fun, though possibly a little one-note on the battlefield. I can see how the strategy elements might become more important as it heats up though, and there seems to be lots to mess around with in the menus so will sink a few hours in over the weekend and see how it goes.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Bought myself a GBA SP and Konami Collection 1 and an English Mother 3 report.
I'm a bit miffed at myself that I didn't go for an SP edition with a better light as the Konami Collection almost needs to be played under a light even with the backlight on. Still having fun with it - Gradius is fine, and I'm digging the Castlevania game's music.
Mother 3 is as it has always been though I'm frustrated that I still can't do the battle timings. I remember people telling me the sync was off on emulators and it was easier on console - this has not been the case. Even with the heartbeat I can't do it right. Not sure if it could be tied to repro quality or if I'm just bad at rhythm games now.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
if it's the ags 001 model of gba sp it has a front light rather than a back light, it's not that great really. imo the best thing to do if you want to play gba games on a proper console is get an original model and install a backlit screen yourself. it's a really super easy mod(no soldering) and you can buy kits with everything you need on ebay for cheap. iirc mine was around £20, although it was a few years ago when i bought it so i may be misremembering.
i keep meaning to buy myself a flash cart for the gba as there are so many great games for it. i pretty much only use mine for playing nazo no murasamejou lately.

Eh. I like the GBA SP more than the original GBA, lack of a headphone port aside.
I'll probably end up grabbing an AGS-101 to cover my lighting needs. A Gamecube+GBPlayer would be ideal in many ways but don't actually think it fits into my life.

It's not the size that matters. It's how you use it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Assuming we're talking the easy, "standard" rhythms (consistent beat ones for instance), in my experience with both the GBA and emulator, you'll want to press the button a few frames before each heartbeat. If you try to press the button exactly on the heartbeats it doesn't seem to register? I found shifting my button press timing to be slightly earlier than what you expect (and I mean very slightly) seemed to help.CStarFlare wrote:Mother 3 is as it has always been though I'm frustrated that I still can't do the battle timings.

Only game I played which somehow succeeds in capturing the Souls vibes and transpose it correctly in 2D. Really good stuff.Necronopticous wrote:Hollow Knight is really good, you guys.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I liked Hollow Knight and thought it was a great experience, but to me it wasn't compelling enough to go for the more complete endings. I finished the game normally but didn't have the drive to continue searching the map and collecting all the stuff necessary for the other endings.Immryr wrote:yeah, i played through hollow knight twice back to back when it came out. i'll have to go back and play through again now all the (free) dlc is out. it's really amazing, i don't think it's a stretch to say it's the best metroid style game ever made, but i haven't 100% made my mind up about that. imiho the only thing super metroid has going over it is the depth and multipurpose-ness of samus' movement kit (which is just amazing).

The best Metroidvania I've ever played was Environmental Station Alpha. That one was compelling enough to do all the post game stuff that had La Mulana levels of difficulty enigmas.
